I think you have unnecessary amounts of baggage with the word "lead." The man takes the lead in this dance because that's the form of the dance -- it's exactly the same as how the Cha-Cha is two-steps and then two quick-steps. It's just the way the dance is.

You /can/ dance it the other way, though.... and it's overly nitpicky for the original thread starter to even point out. Silliness abounds.
