@ch1ral No doubt 40 years from now you will be wondering whats up when people no longer laugh and think stupid at what you grew up with. Like it or not ts a generational thing, it will happen to you one day.
I had to look this up because I heard someone died watching it. I must be missing something because I found ch1ral's comment funnier than the clip. That guy must have been in a bad way and in serious need of a laugh if this is what did him in.
@darrin42 different times, I guess by that time the concept of funny was totally different from what is now.. This is better from a lot of stuff we call 'comedy' nowadays anyway.. I did find it funny, not to die for tho lol
@Sparkonetwo and you know this how? Did he come back from the dead specifically to say 'by the way, it was the way the scotsman was dressed that did it...' I get your point that humour is subjective, but don't make assumptions about things you couldnt possibly know.
I loved The Goodies when I was little.. and although I'm now hurtling towards the big 50, think it's it's a shame that a bit of silliness could be controversial..it still makes me laugh..
Try doing that today....yer'd get strung up as a racist!! Political correctness has got to stop..and soon! If you don't like something, don't watch it.
Here's one American who always appreciated British humor...and any other humor, too. I loved The Goodies, but didn't acquire a taste for Monty Python until much later.
I remember seeing them when I was about 19 or 20 years old. They were the only guys who may have been a touch bit funnier than Benny Hill (no disrespect meant I LOVE BENNY HILL!!). These comedic geniuses showcased some great English comedy. I remember my friends and myself practically rolling on the floor!!! ENGLISH COMEDY IS GREAT!!! I wish we had more Goodies and Benny Hill!!! As an American I say if my fellow Americans don't get it then they need to get a sense of humor! Bloody Daft Yanks!
@LewKaplanski . Dont be so quick to downgrade American comedy, your country has prodced some real class on TV such as Frasier, Simpsons and Family Guy, But its Stand Up Comedy where American comedy really came into its own and influenced comedy in the UK during thr 90s. Forget your Bob Hope and others with an army of writers behind them,America produced two all time giants in Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks. Then in film The Marx Brothers.Benny Hill was childish sexist crap for spotty teenaged boys
A man died laughing to death watching this. His wife then sent the Goodies a letter saying Thank you. Thank-you for making her husbands last moments joyful.
@chris13ap Mate, you should've come Down Under. We've had repeats of The Goodies for years!! We love them more than the Poms did and every time they come down here they are treated like royalty. TBT,GG & BO are so well known here they get mobbed in the streets even 40 years later.
It's not really politically incorrect: it's parodying stereotypes. There's a difference between poking fun at offensive clichés and subscribing to them in earnest. This short clip is too devoid of context to be funny - you need to see the whole episode to get the idea.
Love the racial stereotyping, especially the "Hello!!" from a blackened Graeme. If anyone finds this sketch offensive, kindly sod off back to University with the rest of society's annoying humourless bores. There's another Goodies sketch where they are trying to win some election & called at the door of some black chap & tried to win his vote by doing a black & white minstrel performance in his garden while Bill greeted the bloke with a "Helloo Dere" as if that would win his favour!?! CLASS!
@Railwayman01 Speaking as a university educated girl, I never met anyone at uni who didn't appreciate this sort of stuff, except those who weren't really smart enough to be there. In our student house we watched a lot of Blackadder, had a quotes wall and took pride in being generally silly!
@Virusoffline What i heard, was man called Alex Mitchell wasjust normally sitting on the couch watching, and laughed continuisly for 15 minites, and then he had a major stroke and died from laughter
From what I hear, Alex Mitchell died laughing during the scene where Tim, dressed as a Scotsman, tries to defend himself with his bagpipes. So watch this part of the clip if you dare...
Hilarious. Especially the scotsman. Ps: it's easy to not find things funny, just like it's easy to not appreciate music, art or good food. Why do some people post 'it's not funny' just to let us know they're boring. I already know there's boring people out there. Hi y'all. Now quiet!
I watched a program about the Goodies this very night and I searched up the old Ecky Thump, pretty hilarious in a way. My parents used to watch it, they sang along to the beginning part "Goodie Goodie Yum Yum". But my mum thought that it was Goodie Goodie Gum Drops! XD
I hadn't seen these in forever - thanks for posting. I'm going to link it onto my FACEBOOK page because nobody I ask here in America has ever heard of them, LOL!
@DIACEectronicMusic it is not an old wives tale, it is fact. They just did a feature on it on Weird or What with William Shatner, where they talk about how this man died from laughing watching this very clip. I remember reading about the guy dieing in the paper when I was a kid, as I used to watch the show.
The reason why the ecky thump scenes are funny is due alot to the Northern English dialect. Which foreigners just dont understand. Majority of people in the UK don't talk Home Counties english. BTW used to love eating black pudding !
@Selfhealer22 Only part of Lancashire was renamed Gtr. Manchester, another great chunk was renamed Merseyside and the top bit renamed part of Cumbria.
Personally I stick to old pre '74 proper Lancashire including Manchester and Liverpool. It was only London politicians dividing to rule anyway. They didn't fuck around with the home counties did they eh?
You are obviously kind of retarded. You said anyone who laughs at this has no sense of humour. Do you know what humour is? It's when you find something funny and laugh at it.
For those who don't find this funny, it would definitely help to have seen the whole episode, or to bear in mind that it was basically making fun of the TV series "Kung Fu"!
I remember seeing this as a kid, and indeed, I had the re-attach the arse that I laughed off. Next day at school, everyone was being "Ecky Thumped" in the playground (far more pleasurable to give than "Tango"-ing someone).
