Why do u seek to surrond urself with like-minded indivuals? Anything you would say would be preaching to a choir. And u say there are a lot of objectionists in California and New York? Only because there are a lot of people there...
Personally, I would avoid Manhattan (unless you already have connections there) and instead look at housing in the outer boroughs, most notably the Bronx which is where I grew up.
I hope my donation today helps in your effort. Have a safe trip and as always, thank you for putting your body of knowledge out there on the web...truly priceless, especially the "Suffering and Growth" and "Capitalism" series.
God, your school will not survive in the City. They are so attatched to the wretched NY Board of Ed system there, and a school like yours may not get passed regulations and ignorant parents.
You are confident I must say.
One question: why Manhattan? IMO you should look into neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens too.
Move to long island city in queens, it's a 15 minute trip to Manhattan on the N train and a safe quiet neighborhood. You can rent a room for cheap and save up for your school or whatever. Starting up a school might be hard. I can't image how you are going to do this. I can't even wrap my mind around something like that. Maybe you could earn some cash as a high school tutor or something. If you are really good at a specific subject you can really make some serious cash.
I was a faithful History channel watcher until I learned enough history to know better, and now you and a few professors are my recourse when I'm too burned out to read, and just want to relax before going to bed or something.
Your pronunciation of things can be awful at times (re: "phalanx"), but I'm a language snob, so that's my hang-up, and I've gotten past it. Otherwise, I like the fact that you draw from multiple sources; relate to your skepticism and incredulousness, as you would call it; am impressed by the broad knowledge betrayed by your asides; and find myself often chuckling at your delivery.
I've gone so far as to watch the videos you've made pertaining to the Academy and find my heart going out to you in your efforts to elevate the kids of your town above their conditions. As a skeptic and a cynic, and something of a misanthrope, I reserve my opinion on why you'd want to try, especially in THIS place (I live in Salt Lake), but I respect your noble ambitions.
Anyway, I suppose I could type some more, but you get the drift, and be assured that I will parallel this praise financially in a week or so. Now I'm off to try and fulfill my 'greatest creative potential' (as I've been repeating since I read The Fountainhead some fifteen years ago), helped out just a bit in my efforts by you.
NYC is INCREDIBLY expensive. Then again there is a subculture of survivalists just about making it: Bums!
You should be prepared for liberal parenting agencies and state officials paying unannounced visits to your apartment school there.
My brain hurts just watching you trying to cope with harsh conditions. It is real shit out there, you know and we should work towards changing the corrupt system fundamentals instead of learning to cope with them.
Why don't you move to a place like Wyoming? Cheyenne has 50K people. I'd say that even though you'd have a degree of the same rural anti-intellectualism you've had in Utah, the number of people sympathetic to your style of education would be just as high there as in all of NYC. Yeah, there's more intellectually-active people in NYC, but only if you teach their kids PoMo nonsense. And, the cost of living in Wyoming is what, 1/15 of NY?
MrCropper, aren't the home-schooling regulations much more burdensome in New York than in Utah? As you may recall from John Stossel's documentary on socialized education, "Stupid in America," New York City's government schoolteachers union is so powerful that the government schools are forbidden from even firing sex offenders; sex offender teachers are simply paid to go to a special room & do nothing during the workday
Won't the anti-competitive regulations be extra-tough for you in New York?
Having been educated mostly in the place you're moving to Im going to say that there is a demand for quality teachers there. Finding the right school to get started is a challenge of course, and I don't know any objectivist style schools offhand, but there should be some. It is Rand's city after all. I think you should be able to make it there. If I wasn't between jobs I'd send you some green right now, but that will have to wait another month or so, then I will definetly help out.
You know renting an apartment in Manhattan is kinda nuts. Especially if you intend on starting a school. If I was you I would move to one of the outer burrows, or maybe even in NJ.
You should also start an objectivist meetup group in NYC. I know I'd definitely attend.
In all likelihood, there will be a larger market for your type of school, but have you done any real market research? By that I mean, have you looked at other objectivist-style schools with which you may have to compete, how many students they have, how well equipped they are and what kind of demand there is for them?
The thing is, I don't think there really are any "Objectivist-style" schools except for Cropper and VanDamme. Montesori is relatively similar and does a lot of things well, and I think lots of Objectivists send their kids (or at least used to?) to such schools.
"have you looked at other objectivist-style schools with which you may have to compete, how many students they have, how well equipped they are and what kind of demand there is for them?"
If there are any Objectivists running schools in NYC, I'll introduce myself and apply for a job. : )
USD$85 for a video from inside the New York Mercantile Exchange.
USD$65 more if you can somehow find out any or all hand signals (known as arb) that are unique to the New York Merc.
USD$200 if you can take video from somewhere you aren't meant to be, say, for example, if visitors aren't allowed in the oil pit, yet somehow you end up in the oil pit (you can even cite the challenge and the cause to persuade events in your favor).
USD$65 for video from inside the gold vault at the FRBNY.
Oh this is so cool MrC! I live in the UK, but I intend to move to America (New York first stop :) ) in a few years, if you are still there I will come by and visit your school! :) Good luck with everything.
