How could anyone not love the Shins? Honestly, they are too amazing. I was just introduced to them recently, and i have no idea how i lived without them.
@wolfmother27 theres a difference between natural skill and practiced skill, pop is usually no skill, a good average band is practiced skill, a band like this is where they put people where they belong, natural skill, plus the edition of practice skill creates the perfect live preformance
Not many people know (or it seems to me like not many people know) that Windows Media Center has two or three Shins songs from Chutes Too Narrow as demos when you open it, just in case you don't have any music in it to begin with.
The Shins are a great band. I've always thought, however, that their visual doesn't quite match the sound of their music. To me, they give off a definite late 60's mod/psychedelic sound; A tad more stylization would enhance their product, I think - a paisley telecaster, a Rickenbacker 330, a shave... Go Shins.
It's not often I consider "polish" to give creedence to the quality of a band...But, I agree with you. The Shins have serious talent and have crafted their retro sound and memory-jarring lyrics with precision. If they finished-off the "sound" with the "look" it would take their artistry to the next level...and give their audience a "Shins Experience".
They are awesome, and this was a great performance--sound, they were tight, etc. But I loathe these shows that only feature the bands at the very end & rarely interview them. I would enjoy seeing an interview with them too.
i love the shins for their great melody, great overall band balance of sound, and most importantly their originality. I think James Mercer is one of the most gifted living artists today. Wonderful lyricist. Very dynamic sound. Very fresh and rangey.
What I love about these guys is how genuine they are live. They're not one of those bands that sounds great on the album but then you go to a show and it's like wtf.
I jog to this song, the studio version I mean. James's vocal at the end makes me want to travel at the speed of light. Enjoy it. Bands grow stale. Inevitable as forest fire.
I didn't think of Chris Parnell before, but yeah, Marty seems to resemble him (assuming you're referring to Marty). Dave, on the left, reminds me of a slightly more olive-toned Jimmy Fallon. Funny how that works.
i don't think the shins stole from the beach boys, while sounding similar at times, the beach boys never had a real hard drum beat and they didn't use synthesyzers since they hadn't been invented yet, but nonetheless. alos, james mercer's lyrics are deep and meaningful, and most , not all, of the beach boys' songs' meanings weren't too hard to figure out.
Youre just like alot of people, you think the Beach Boys were just songs about surfer girls and shit. But they actually went on to do pretty psychedelic things. They paved the way for alot of todays music. I haer Brian Wilson influence everywhere these days.

If you compare this to them playing Turn on Me on Letterman, you can tell how the quality improved. It's exponential.
Even their imstruments upgraded.
Also, James has an amaziing voice even though he's faking an English accent... I wonder if it's deliberate?

James Mercer would be flattered by the comparisons to Brian Wilson. Baffled, but flattered nonetheless.
Obviously, Mercer's the better poet. Wilson leaned on Tony Asher and Vandyke Parks for words to his gorgeous music.
