The Tubes never got respect as the serious, talented musicians they were. They played my high school in about 76' or 77'. Did Space Baby, and this one far more bizzare song in which a momma guitar gives birth to a baby guitar. Two other Bay Area bands of note also played my high school. Maybe you've heard of them. Journey when they were good (pre-Perry) and Earthquake (I still have a drumstick from that one). We had a TV, and a recording studio class. Our teacher (Chet Farrow) knew Bill Grahm.
Theie first album is still amazing! -- I listen to it quite frequently - saw them at The Roxy in Hollywood in the early 80's - we go to pick the songs they did that night --there were sheets on the tables with all their songs listed and we picked like 15 or so and they tallied them up and performed the most voted ones that night ... I remember WPOD wasn't listed - and the sheet said don't put that one down - because they would be doing that one without a doubt .... something like that....
I was fortunate enough, at 14 yrs. old,to be reading Circus magazine regularly and happened across a review of The Tubes' first LP.It quoted some of the lyrics from,"White Punks On Dope" and talked about Fee Waybill's alter ego,"Quay Lewd".I knew that I had to buy it . It belongs in every rock lover's library.
These were the best years for the tubes, around this time they made some of their greatest songs. Space Baby is one of my favorites, and i think it's the best singing Bill Spooner ever does.
Can't favor this video more.....This is what The Tube were and are to me - a high point in my musical collection. No Band speaks to me more, not the Monks, Prince Edwards magic, not even Khan or early Genesis. Looking forward to the full Documentary. Nikki Lee
I saw these guys at The Orphanage in San Francisco around 75 or 76. Their music sounds more interesting to me now than it did then. The Orphanage was a relatively small venue. I was sitting on the floor in front of the stage. They sang the Marty Robins "El Paso", and at the end, the singer started oozing stage blood, fell dead, rolled into my lap and got blood on the best pants I owned. I was kind of pissed. I felt kind of embarrassed for the lead singer and all his dorky costumes.
I believe this video was actually shot at a marathon video recording session at Fantasy Records in Berkeley. My High School class provided a lot of the stage crew etc. It was shot with a 2 camera color video truck and was directed by Vince Genato from Moraga Cable channel 6.
I forgot to mention that same night the band also performed a version of Rock and Roll Hospital with Fee as the doctor Rhea Stiels, not sure of her name, as the sexy nurse. The finale was a guitar giving birth to a ucalally.
I did a little more research and the location of this video was "His Master's Wheel" recording studio in San Francisco. Elliot Mazer, Producer of Neil Young's Harvest, owned the studio and there were 4 other bands a the marathon video shoot.
Man, this is one of my favorite of the Tubes' many greats. Terrific video! How about some video of "I was a punk before you were a punk"? I've been imagining the on-stage scene's visuals for the whole "Johnny Bugger and the Dirtboxes" thing since I was about 9 years old!
I have loved The Tubes ever since I heard their first LP many, many years ago. I still can't get enough of them. I wish they'd come to Florida sometime. It seems they stay mostly on the west coast.
wow glyph68, man that really sucks rhino balls. you know originally the concept behind pay tv was you pay money for tv with no commercials. now these greedy corporate pigs have decided to charge us for commercials, with an occasional break for the program. then during the show they slam you with, like you said, the pop-up crap. an audio accompaniment for the event is totally unacceptable. it's a complete rip-off. i only watch the news, but have to always keep the mute button in close proximity.
Love the cool opening instrumental...reminds me of the vibe of early XTC...Surely Andy Partridge was a fan...I wish they had recorded it...had they?? Incredible band.
The playing here is great. I not only love it on its own, but get subtle hints of Zappa (St Alfonzo) and the "anthemic" tradition. Love the Power. But let's get to the shrimp head space alien. Or the ginger root alien. I mean, that has to be as kookoo as anything. Yet good crooning. Invite Sigourney Weaver to view this.
anyone who thinks Journey was better "pre- perry" needs to have their head checked

Wow....intro reminds me of Be Bop Deluxe. Another underrated prog band from the 70's.

Atleast it's not reached TV proportions, where the ads are covering 1/3 of the screen.

And one station here is introducing audio for the pop-up ads! They mute down the TV Show and play a little audio byte!
Guess which channel I never watch...
