it wasnt an all black team it consisted of 7 black players and 5 white players, Coach Haskins chose to play 5 negro players with 2 subs to make a statement and to integrate collegiate basketball.

Coach Haskins played his best players and had no intention of making a statement other than winning a tournament. He never gathered the team (like the movie shows) and told them he was playing the "negroes" in order to make a statement. That was a Hollywood addition.
