During the time of the Scottish witch hunts (between 1650-1700) There is absolutely no archeological or historical data that says people even ate or grew rye in that area, which is the cereal ergot grows on. When people hallucinated they honestly felt they where talking to gods and spirits because given that people had no idea how drugs like psilocybin react in our neuron receptors, things like "magic" and "spirits" where the best and only explanation for any of it.
