Okay, here is my theory. Zabuza picked him up off the streets very young, yes? Maybe too young to know the difference between male and female. Does zabuza seem like the kind of man to explain to a child what a man or woman is? I think Haku is a girl but was never taught anything about women and grew up assuming she/ he was the same gender as Zabuza.

also there are special techniques - e.g. sharingan - that he probably wouldn't be able to beat.

I bawled my eyes out when Haku died and I was upset for a week. I always am though when one of my favorite characters die;( it's so sad!! But I HATE it when they die and "miraculously" come back to life. I'm sitting there crying my eyes out and then they come back and I'm like, "WTF!!!!!" but at the same time I'm soo happy!!
