There are who may be ethnically part of the original group but no longer practice the religion. That is why a two- state solution, based on 67 lines, with some adjustments such as a Jewish quarter in Jerusalem, will compensation given to the Palestinians is so important. But reqretzin, the real reason Israel survived in 1948 was this --- the Jews knew that 60 million Arabs could not wait to finish the job that the Nazis and their allies started -- total genocide against the Jews. They could not afford to lose, period, and exist.

It is truly amazing how much disinformation can be found in these posts when all it takes is a brief reading of history books to separate fact from fiction! The Jews have lived continuously in Israel from Bibilical times. Other peoples lived there before them, but no modern people can trace their roots back to those inhabitants and most certainly not the arabs called Palestinians today! Read "Travels in the Holy Land" by Mark Twain/Samuel Clemens to see how the situation was 150 years ago.

Palestine was was annexed by America and England in 1948 to create Israel as a Cold War ploy against the USSR by siphoning away jewish wealth and brains from the communist regions. American and British military forces combined with the jews in all the conflicts with the arabs to ensure that their Cold War device would survive. The jews were definitely no "underdog" in 1948, 1956, 1967 or 1973 since Israel always had more troops than the arabs and also superior air-to-ground weapons.
