  • Lang Lang is the greatest pianist on this side of the galaxy. He is mastering the piano with such an ease as if he is the sound of the strings himself...

  • For me the interpretation of Michele Campanella is better even if this time he plays very clean...:)

  • He's having a bad day, maybe! His friska is a mess. Jung Lin's performance puts this to shame! XD

  • Sure, this isn't what Liszt originally "intended," but I do like a lot of the interesting things Lang Lang does. I, personally, don't hear this in my head when I think of this piece, and I'll never play it the way he does, but that doesn't mean it's not interesting and enjoyable in its own way.

  • wOOw

  • he checked if jerry was in the piano at 2:32

  • 2:44 the gap ruins the whole piece

  • There's no doubt that Lang Lang is a true master of the piano, but I think his interpretations are too wild. This piece was originally written to emulate Hungarian folk music. I think Liszt would've been confused by this performance.

  • I cant stop listening to this, its so good!

  • His button is about to fall offf :(

  • I was there!!!

  • adam gyorgy is better

  • @gtizzle101 absolutely agree.... this is great, but adam gyorgy is different class

  • This IS Liszt, passion and virtuosity. Nothing more to say.

  • im suprised the airports have these huge expensive machines to make sure people are not stuffing dynomite in their underwear, and they don't use those at concerts to prevent concert coughers.

  • @thegowave I cant stand those poeple if they have a soar throat they shouldt go to a concert! glad im not the only one who hates them^^

  • I was there!!!!

  • that is one big ass piano

  • @mushroom69690 ye its a beautiful Steinway model D!, !!!, , ,

  • i wonder if this guy buys all of his scores...

  • this is liszt

  • <3

  • Ok, not what a regular pianist thinks about this piece. But i think Liszt would be proud. A real virtuous. Funny and majestic!

  • Part of this piece was on an episode of Tom and Jerry!

  • @guilhugas This entire piece was on Tom and Jerry minus the repeat.

  • I just played the last 16 seconds of the piece by ear :D i'm so proud of my ear

  • For those of you asking about dissimilarities, this is not the original Liszt version but the Liszt-Horowitz version. It makes the easy parts harder and the hardest part easier.

  • Lang Lang made this piano his bitch

  • Is he playing the original music? So many parts are altered.

  • The purists who denounce any reinterpretation of classic works are the same Victorian elitist morons who strip "art music" of its relevance and palatability for more and more people; this isn't more sacred than anything else, so turn that nose back down. As zimmermann1986 pointed out, Liszt was a showman in the same vein as Lang Lang, so he's being TRUER to the spirit of the piece, if anything.

  • anyone who says they dont like this interpretation can suck my dick. lang lang = GOD

  • he knows how to get people's heart... tho i dont really like his interpretation in this piece.. :)

  • Hard looking. But good. :)

  • He has talent, but I'm not a big fan of this interpretation. I'm not big on the, "fast the slow," rinse repeat piano playing.

  • Liszt is turning is his grave....

  • I never heard this guy so clean. I really like this interpretation.

  • This guy is truly the best when playing pieces like these,.He's a Chinese Liszt!

  • What really irritates me is the fact, that people dislike the video because they don't like Lang Lang. Their dislike has nothing to do with the interpretation it self. Can't believe that they can be so blind and completely pathetic..

  • I'm not usually fond of those who add their own cadenzas, trills, etc. to the original composition. But I have to say I fucking love that passion. love the lower octave dynamics too. also I noticed in most of his performances he does this finishing gesture swaying his arms outwards then in, haha Tha Lang Lang Finishing Blow!

  • i dun care the others, but i just love Lang lang and this piece ! And I belive that he brings China proud ! Well done !

  • 50 years later, the critics here will eventually become a joke, while langlang will become a legend in the history of piano...History is repeating, recall Paganini and Cziffra.

  • Liszt just got trolled.

But in all seriousness, I don't like his interpretation. This Rhapsody in it's basic, unaltered form, is one of the greatest, and most incredible pieces of Piano music ever written. It is my personal favourite. But of course there is always interpretation. And some are good. Lang Lang's is very interesting, depicting Liszt's pieces as even more insane than it already began. But I think it pushes it a bit too far. And Baroque performers improvised the most, not Rom.

  • If you dilettantes and snobs had more than an eye drop's worth of musical knowledge, you would realize that Liszt likely performed this piece differently every time. That's the nature of a rhapsody... we're not talking about a Bach partita or a Beethoven sonata. It's meant to be fun, flashy and even frivolous. Some of you need to relax and smile :)

  • That seems to be the problem with most people these days... They go for the one that plays the hardest version. I think people have lost sight as to watch music is all about. I'm studying this piece and I can hear everything he's doing differently but that doesn't mean it's bad. This has got to be my favourite version of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody!

  • Lang Lang Esagera Troppo L'Espressione Facciale e Hanno Ragione i Critici....E poi Non è Così la Rapsodia è Un'esecuzione Modificata da Lui...Mette Note Ke non Ci sono NEllo spartito....Per piacere Andatevi A Vedere L'esecuzione Di MAKSIM...e Poi Lang Si basa Solo SUlla Velocità secondo me...

  • I don't usually like his interpretations, but I love his passion. It was said that when he was young, upon seeing Tom play this piece in Tom and Jerry, all he ever wanted to do from then on was to play the piano. so understand where he's coming from, for him this is probably like a tribute

  • @anonymousaccount100 Well said.

And it DOES kinda look like he's looking for a mouse back there sometimes :L

  • @ProCrastiVisionJRD hahahaha it would be epic if one did pop out of the piano

  • The version of the ending he is playing is the easiest professional version for the song, try listening to Horowitz or Yundi Li, the ending is MUCH harder than the version he is playing. The guy was talking total shit, that version wasn't arranged by Horowitz, and Horowitz didn't make the song impossible, he made the easier parts harder and the ending, which is the hardest part of the piece, easier.

  • The critics can go to hell.

  • amazing! He has the hungarian flare and passion needed to play this piece. My favorite version for sure. Definetly the most captivating.

  • thumbs up for the face at 5:20

  • @yoyoyo1288 Omg, win :D

  • I wonder what he's like in bed.

  • I wonder if critics listen the whole 9 minutes of this piece before commenting

  • @omgwhtrudoing doubt it, but the critics are gay fags

  • @omgwhtrudoing 4:15 goosepimples .... absolute fantastic....

  • Lang Lang's technique is absolutely amazing. All the traditionalists who are criticizing him for his soul need to get a life. We need to appreciate the fact that he cares so much about the piece to add some of his own flavour into it.

  • Something that is unique about his playing, is it is the epitome of modern art; anarchist. There is nothing abnormal about his contemporary playing, although further critique will follow. He transforms the artwork of a romantic, and converts it to a contemporary work of art. There is no doubt a specific reason for his immense popularity; his ability to transform art into something modernly appreciative. Anyone can execute traditionally, but there is nothing unique about it.

  • @theviciousguitar He does nevertheless sometimes display pompous physical integration with his playing, but it exposes something yet again very unique about lang lang. The music surges throughout his body and manifests in his abstract interpretation of the music. Once should appreciate something about all professionals, for there is something perfect and imperfect about their playing. There is no shame however in disagreeing with his playing, everyone should and has a right to have an opinion.

  • Freestyle! :)

  • Lol. I laugh at you people that can't appreciate another person putting his own interpretation. I LAUGH. You traditionalists must live dull lives following rules

I've been playing for 13 years, DEFINITELY not calling myself a great pianist but one thing I can say is that I have the highest of respects for people that put their souls in their pieces. All of you who follow rules all the time mention Horowitz brendel blabla.

WHO SAID Liszt wouldn't love to see people play his piece with their v

  • Like someone with too much money - Bang Bang spends his musical capital wrongly-

  • The playing is excellent... I don't care a flyin' f*ck about all the criticism that Lang Lang always gets, to me he is a real genius. He plays this his way, so what? He's no less good because of that.

The only thing is, the piano here is miked wrongly and maybe badly mixed as well. The treble is way too high. It's supposed to be classical piano, yet it sounds almost like pop... or worse, like Honky Tonk. The piano, I mean, not Lang Lang.

  • Oh..! My God. Is a clown,a bad clown. Why does he play a transcription. He is not Horowitz.

  • @jorgeliebermann A sad clown indeed, very offensive keyboard manners- I wish him a great teacher before his sensationalism burns out.

  • @Bruce88keys With out doubt his piano technics is marvelous. He does not need his ridiculous manners. There are some words of Earl Wild about it (not about Lang Lang) that are exactly about this problem. He most attend Brailowsky,Horowitz,Rubinstein,Wild,Uchida or Lisitsa.

  • @batsucker :)

  • Awful!!!!!!!!!!NO feeling for Hungarian music...wow, people buy really EVERYTHING, if the advertisement for it is fine....

  • Actually scrap that, around the 7th minute it sounds like he has stopped playing; a member of the audience has got sick and tired of his facial expresssions, picked him up by his feet and is using his head to play the remainder of the music.

  • He plays nicely but some of his facial expressions make me want to give him a slap.

  • @hddpgcse I just imagined him playing on a piano. You come on stage and slap him. Then, as if nothing happened, return to your sit.

  • his expression is priceless

  • i bet he was secretly pretendin to be tom in the tom and jerry clip of them performing this very piece together ;) .... well it wouldnt surprise me tbh, that little clip did inspire Lang Lang to play the piano :D if it wasn't for William Hanna or Joseph Barbera, we wouldn't be watching this!

  • This is simply amazing... Only Lang Lang to play something like this with so much virtuosity, especialy the Friska! Simply awesome! :)

  • 2:25 it's like someone sneaked under the piano and grabbed his balls. He almost hit his face on the piano!

  • My second favorite.

I still like Jung Lin's a bit more.

  • The best of the best version ever heard. Flying fingers only better than Tom. AMAAAAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • HOLY SHIT! I NEVER KNEW MICHAEL MCINTYRE PLAYED THE PIANO :O

  • I wish I could play like this! I love the part at about 6:08 that part is just amazing!

  • Comment removed

  • yea, i don't really like this at all. he takes way too much liberty with tempo, dynamics, and basically everything. if you're gonna fudge around with it that much, call it lang lang's adaptation of liszt's hungarian rhapsody no.2, not liszt's hungarian rhapsody no.2, which this isn't.

not to say lang lang sucks of course. he has skill and showmanship. but i clicked here to get the hungarian rhapsody no.2 that i have the sheet music for, and this isn't it.

  • @celach

This isn't the original anyway, he's playing horowitz's version

  • @celach Meh, in music, there IS no such thing as taking too much liberties, especially when playing alone. This is Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. Yes, it's his interpretation of it, but that doesn't change a thing. The best players in the world are not the ones who can just mindlessly play what is in the sheets, but to make them your own.

  • @Azuresan I'm kind of at a loss when people make comments like this. We're talking about a composition that Liszt wrote here. You're saying Liszt didn't know what he was doing when he wrote this and left the majority of it up to interpretation? No I think Liszt knew precisely what he was doing when he composed. There is a thing called interpretation but its not blatantly changing dynamic pp to mf, or the tempo or anything else that you just feel like in the name of 'interpretation'

  • @celach

I'm kind of at a loss when you think Lang Lang is playing the same thing on your sheet music. Do you think Horowitz was a horrible pianist by "messing" with Liszt's "already perfect" composition by making this arrangement (and playing it himself)? Also, please look up the definition of a rhapsody as it pertains to music.

  • @anonymous345 Well no, I didn't realize this was horowitz's version. It should say that in the title or description somewhere. And I didn't say it makes you horrible. I was responding to that guy who said it was mere 'mindlessness' to perform a composition the way the composer intended it.

  • @celach

it's mentioned in the video at 8:32 and in the comments for this video, but I agree it should be in the title and description

  • love this guy and his playing style, and its one of my favorite pieces, all in all, it makes me very happy and isnt that what its supposed to do!

  • what a genius!

  • "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." -Albert Einstein.

  • If this was the first time I heard Lang Lang, I would have thought he is a terrible musician.

  • @pbryld blahaha.. OH??? and why is that? i suppose your talent as a soloist is above this particular perfomance?

  • @johnsull66 I don't need to in order to state that this is bad. That's like saying i can't say someone sings horribly without being able to sing beautifully myself.

  • @pbryld dont confuse apples with oranges moron. Its one thing for a "nobody" like yourself to criticize a fellow "nobody" on their shortcomings as a perfomer/soloist or whatever. But when a NOBODY with zero talent (such as yourself) cuts down one of the greatest living soloists on the planet, it becomes almost comical. Then, while looking at other solo performances on youtube, i see your name come up again and again, always criticizing every performance from amateur to pro. you're fkn pathetic .

  • @johnsull66 My name coming up again and again? I've posted like 10 comments on here. Look, moron, by comment clearly implied that I knew Lang Lang is a terrific pianist, but this particular interpretation is awful. There is a reason that everyone is posting how they dislike this video, except moron-wannabes like you who defends your big hero for no reason whatsoever. Get a life!

  • @pbryld whatever douchebag... your idiocy speaks for itself. Lang is NOT my hero by any means, and im not sticking up for him. im saying that in order to criticize ANY soloist as good as him, then you should have the skills to back it up..which you so obviously dont based on the videos you posted of yourself as proof. further more you go to the extent of dissing some amateur just posting his work for fun..like he cared Ive not seen you post ONE single positive comment; face it, your a troll

  • @johnsull66 Dear lord, you really are a moron. My previous comment was mostly just for calling you something bad. Whenever you read a review of something, lets say a Lang Lang concert, I am quite sure the journalist/critic does not play as well as L. L. You know why, moron? Because one doesn't need to be better in order to dub something bad/good. Only morons would think so. Morons like you.

  • @pbryld ok buddy .. you win. im wrong and youre right. will you shut up now? all im saying is that you seem to have a lot of negative criticism for the world of solo piano. its just as easy to find 1 or 2 things you like about something and post it as it is to tear the person down for 1 or 2 things you dont like. be a little more positive and then maybe you wont be such an angry person.

  • @johnsull66 One thing is for sure: There wasn't anything about this performance that I liked. And i'm glad you finally realised how wrong you've been this whole time. I'm not generally an angry person - only towards people like you, who, without a doubt, come off as chronically pissed off.

  • @pbryld hahaha...i liked the part when you actually thought i was apologizing. youre a fucking idiot!

  • the biginning seems off tempo.... but great nevertheless!

  • Not everyone is going to like his interpretation... but you have to stand in complete awe of his amazing showmanship. Critics might say he's doing Liszt a disservice, but Liszt was a showman too... he'd hire women to swoon and faint at his shows back in the 1800s. I've always preferred sacrificing the odd note for an emotional performance myself, that's the route I've always taken as a pianist. A well-deserved BRAVO!

  • @zimmermann1986 Indeed. Many people don't realize that it's actually the hard and at the same time fluid emotion classical piano requires that draws in the audience. Without emotion and a certain amount of showmanship, I don't think the audience will want more...

  • @zimmermann1986

    beautifully said

too many musicians follow rules. it takes out the beauty of personal interpretation and distinction

  • @zimmermann1986 that guy is awesome bravo!!!!!

  • @zimmermann1986 i totally agree, playing liszt requires quite a lot of character :D

  • dont really like his over Show offy interpretation-he should stick to the original way

  • Terrible. Queda claro que el que se tenga afinidad para ejecutar rápidamente un movimiento no significa que sepas interpretarlo. Esto no es una rapsodia, esto es una carrerita personal contra el reloj haciendo gestos de niño chiquito.

  • Asians and their cheat codes..

  • @noeezyfluff We don't have cheat codes. You say something like that and it disrespects our ethnic group.

  • My god this is horrible not because I am racist because I am asian too

  • The begining is horrible

  • Great piece. Lang lang's face expressions to the piece made it all the more better haha.

  • Is the piece arranged as a whole by Horowitz or is the Cadenze just written by him?

  • @UnionJaked It doens't sound like the Horowitz version.I think most of it's Liszt's original version, of course with some horowitzian influences (such as dynamics). I'm not sure of of the cadenza. This is good, because I haven't seen anyone play horowitz's version well except Horowitiz. I think other pianists should just stick with Liszts version. This is actually well played by Lang Lang.

  • His dad almost told him to go suicide.

  • Trans Siberian Orchestra needs to do a hardcore version of this.

  • Too much banging! Lang Lang has very good technical ability, but his playing is so mechanical it makes me cringe. It lacks articulation, dynamic contrast....just that feeling of a piece one gets when it's played by a master. Also, this is one of the videos that show how much he's undermining his own technique by being "show-y." He strikes several chords wrong, not because he doesn't know them, but because he moves his hands too far away from the piano too quickly.

  • he's technically amazing...but he lacks maturity in performing

  • Ok at last i got Horowitz Music sheet

  • he certainly got the layout well... but theres something lacking...

its not my favorite interpretation, but it was ok. too much banging, makism was better i feel...

but lang lang is cool i guess! =b

  • alle die das hier nic h gut finden sind doch blo eifersüchtig!!!

    gebst zu!!!

  • cartoon character without equal

  • Lang Lang motivated to learn piano by this song in cat concerto Tom o Jerry 1947

  • boobs! under the piano at 0:54

  • @2cello yes, great, thank you....

  • @2cello LOL!

  • @2cello haha sick bastard i like it

  • @2cello LOL. The blonde third from the right if I was given the oppotunity.

  • lang lang is einfaach genial!

ich will garnich wissen wie lange der am tag vorm klavier sitzt^^

  • I do too, lol, his expressions are hilarious, unless thats just his face

  • Hamelin is the only one who can play this correctly

  • no one plays this piece the same

  • Clown show. lol But at the time, a genius at work.

  • @lllllllllllllll88 he is somewhat of a clown espicially around 2:22 lol but u have to admit he's got some skill

  • wow I'm surprised the piano didnt break after all of that

  • He's ugly. But can't deny his talented.

  • <3 Lang Lang

  • no soul at all in his performance

  • He really made this piece almost impossible but honestly, I don't like it. I prefer the original.

  • 5:05 look in the front row there is a blond kid sitting pretending to play an imaginary piano with his fingers XD

  • TERRIFIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I prefer Maksim's interpretation. This seems a little colder emotionally.

  • @dajazman2k thank you.maskims emotion comes across so incredibly. i play the piano and i can only dream of attempting this but this version comes across as cold to me also.

  • you can tell how much he loves his music just by looking at him playing!

  • @PandaBoi11 Thumbs up if you think this is irrelevent.

  • @PandaBoi11 Two thumbs up ALL THE WAY!

  • 7:05

Better get that button fixed, Bang Bang, before it flies off and kills somebody...

  • hahahah I love the crazy ad libs.!

just the way liszt would like someone to play it :D

  • more appreciation, less bullshit.

you guys are in the wrong century, information century let many low level human has the authority to get the high level human information, finally they jealous and upsad and bullshit, thats all.

normally, before information century, you guys are just playing your fingers all day and in fact you guys would enjoy a lot

  • Who cares how different his is? Lang Lang, you are my idol, the person I want to model my piano-playing after!

  • que maldita cosa tan fea maksim mrvica la toca que dan ganas de inspirarse de lo hermoso .l.

  • Comment removed

  • i wonder wt he sees when plays the piece...

  • @utopian1129 Probably the very scene from Tom and Jerry's Cat Concerto.. That's what he says motivated him to start piano in the first place. :D

  • Skills to pay the bills

  • You know what I find odd?

The version of HR used on the Tom and Jerry episode was the original by Liszt (slightly shortened of course, but still the original)

Lang Lang however always plays the Horowitz arrangement (which in my opinion is inferior to the original). You'd think that he'd play the version used in the cartoon, but it seems necessarily not...

  • @JacobRudduck Really? I wish I could find that recording.

  • @crazycellist973 Of what? The original cartoon or Lang Lang? The cartoon is one here if you want to compare...

  • Pro much?

  • WHATS THAT FUCK IS?

  • Epic

  • At 4:37 he plays extremely well. The distinction of the tones is incredible, and the speed. I love him!

  • acho q essa eh a musica mais foda do mundo

  • Franz Liszt is spinning in his grave at this hack.......
