It appears the four Ds of DOGSO are satisfied: One Defender to beat (the keeper), Direction toward the goal, Distance to the goal about 20 yards, and Distance to the ball was within playing distance. Still, I would have held the whistle, citing advantage. You can always issue the red card for DOGSO, if need be.

Once this is determined to be a foul (a DFK offense) for the hold and the referee has waited to see if a goal was scored, this _had_ to be a send off. A caution would not have even been much of an option.

@socref79 Impeding the progress of an opponent is an IFK offense. IFK offenses are also covered under the DOGSO-FK umbrella.

Saying that the determination that this particular DFK offense is DOGSO-FK does not imply that an IFK offenses cannot be DOGSO-FK. My mention of DFK was to clarify the boundaries of the term "foul."

It would be rare. How can an attacker be moving with the ball toward goal with OGSO, yet not be within playing distance? I could see it, but unlikely.

(Continued post) There are four things that must be looked at to call a (DOGSO) they are: 1.Distance to the goal (just outside the 18); 2. Distance to the ball (ball is within playing distance of the attacker); 3. Direction of play (play headed right towards the goal); 4. Number of defenders (attacker had all the defenders beat and was headed towards goal, keeper is not in the equation). A palyer does not have to go down or be knocked down. All four mentioned are met and the proper card given.

Oh those who do not know the HS Rules and USSF. This is denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity (DOGSO) which is a straight red, disqualification in HS and send-off in USSF. In HS it is Rule 12-8 Art.3, d.2. Misconduct. In USSF it is Law 12 Fouls and Misconduct under Sending-Off Offenses. This was very good call by the official as a foul does not have to be a contact or knockdown type of foul. In this case a shirt pull that brought on the call (DOGSO).

The fans are so unsporting, they shout stuff at the player when he fouls the other player, then they celebrate like they've won the World Cup when he's sent off. The foul wasn't even that bad, like others said the player fouled had a shot afterwards. It was a yellow card offence (at the most).

The offence was the shirt pull (unsporting behaviour). The player didn't go down however, so I would not have given it myself... though I have done that before and now see it was a silly mistake. I can see why it was given though. Because it was an obvious goalscoring opportunity and in the referee's eyes, a foul, , it is a sending off offence (denying of an obvious goalscoring opportunity)
