  • What if Black chooses to play 2...Nc6 instead? Should White still respond with 3.f4?

  • Hey Matt, one thing I don't understand, after 1.d4 d5 2.e3 Nf6 3. Bd3 Nc6 4.f4 Nb4 5.Nf3 Nxd3 6.cxd3 e6 7.Nc3, why doesn't Black play 7...c5 to lead into the similar opening as seen in the Teichmann Defence? After continuations such as 8.dxc5 Bxc5 White has a central pawn structure that is quite shaky. What do you suggest against 7...c5?

  • My chess coach always plays the stonewall and ive learned to play it as well and we both do one move different then as you played it out. When the knight took Bishop at d3, we take back with the Queen instead of the pawn. If you could make a video about how you would play it out against that, I would really appreciate it. Got any questions just send me a message. Thx

  • Awesome videos!

    I'm gonna subscribe to you.

  • i want to challenge you, to test what u got

  • Stonewall Attack is a great opening to get your feel wet playing 1 d4. Until I read How To Think Ahead In Chess, I never ventured playing 1 d4.

I think your videos are great ... I would like to make similar videos for the opening that I play ... Can you share with me what hardware/software do I need to make videos?

    Anyway

  • I enjoyed these videos, although I prefer getting into a stonewall-type position by playing 1. f4 first. That way you can bring your knight out behind it. Then get the stonewall going with d4, e3, c3, Nd2, Nf3, 0-0. That way the e4 square is over protected . Eventually I play Ne5 and if takes, take back with the f pawn giving my rook an open file. That guy krakkaskak has done quite a lot of videos on the stonewall too beginning with f4.

  • The problem I see with trying to get a Stonewall with f4 first is Black can dominate e4 before White gets a chance to overprotect it, e.g. 1.f4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.d4 Bf5

  • Not to mention From's gambit can be played.

  • @GreenCastleBlock But can't White play a reversed-coloured Stonewall Dutch with 1.f4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e6 Bf5 4. Be2?

  • The problem with the stonewall is what is your answer to Nf6, by far the most popular move? e3 leads to a bad position for white, because black hasn't commitied to d5 and can play g6, d6, and e5 like in a king's indian, adn the pawn on g6 blunts the bishop. I personally play 1.e6 against d4, e4 into a french (which i love to play) and if c4 i just go back to regular indain games with Nf6. Also, here e3 is bad because black has f5!, when he has a much better version of the dutch defense.

  • Great post. I'm getting fed up with Black's flexible move orders myself. 1...e6 2.e3 f5 looks very reasonable. Even better, I've discovered, is 1.d4 Nf6 2.e3 c5 3.c3 b6!

I don't agree with your statement that 1.d4 Nf6 2.e3 g6 is bad for White. It's only bad if White trots out his "Stonewall" setup with c3 and Bd3. He should play b3,Bb2,Nf3,Be2 (reversed Tartakower setup) and it's a different chess game altogether.

  • Thanks for posting this series. I always hate when I play the Stonewall and lose my light-squared bishop...it throughs my off. :) This helps.

  • How about 4.a3 in response to 3...Nc6 aiming to keep that white B on the very active d3

  • After 4...e5 what is your follow up?

  • great job, keep up the good work

  • You're awesome.

Thank you SO much for taking time out of your day for all of us viewers.

  • Great work Matt :-)

When you get time, could you possibly make a video on the English opening? -- I've got Tony Tony Kosten's 'The Dynamic English' but I'm finding the layout a little bit confusing in places -- he does seem to jump onto different lines without much explanation sometimes. A summary of what white should be aiming to achieve, from you, would be really helpful

    Cheers.

  • great job

    keep the legacy going

  • good vid. is there any way that you can put coordinates up on the vid as well? I have trouble following the E5 C6 and all of that stuff easily.

  • Another great vid Castle!

  • excellent job. I find your instructions very helpful.

  • nice vid.

  • very insightful

  • Excellent video.

I learn something new from every video you make and look forward to future installments in this series.

  • great as usual
