This version the listener can't identify with either part because what parts get sung by whom is almost random. While their voices blend together well, I don't think this was the song to sing as a two part harmony duet, but a back and forth duet, with a dabble of blend at the very end.

With the back and forth duet, the "couple" can have a conversation that each party can identify with each side of the failed relationship...

I am actually going to try this in a recording this weekend.

Carrie nails part of this and misses completely on other parts of it.  To me a song has it's own heart and soul, and that lies within the original, and it is hard to recapture it.

What I think would have worked MUCH better, would have been to have the remake be a conversation between the two artists, with Randy singing the verses as close to the original as possible and Carrie singing the chorus in her very powerful tones.

I'd like to offer a different perspective on this song and version.

I am a HUGE Randy Travis fan and love his solo version.  I really like Carrie Underwood's voice. I love the deep country sound in music in general, especially the storytelling.

I like parts of this song, but others I don't. Much of that has to do with taste. I like when a live rendition sounds as close to the studio version as possible. Randy's "flavor" and part are not similar enough to the original version for my ears.

I'm not a music critic and not a Carrie Underwood fan BUT while I don't think this song is for her, I do think she's far more talented than Randy Travis and I AM a fan of his.. For me it's all about how they preform live. If we're all honest without mixing and patching up in studio Randy Travis can't carry a tune, Carrie Underwood on the other hand can hold her on on any stage. Even listening to them sing this together, he's so off target that she simply can't follow him.

This song has so much meaning to me that no one will ever know, as you get really close to someone when you are both moved by a song you hear at the same time. Well, when Travis recorded it, he was releasing it to a different generation. That generation being one that is not keen to the internet. His version sadly is not on here (not that I have found) only because she remade it in a different era. And it's not about who did it better.
