tutu my grey always had 2 cats in the house. she tolerated them. Mari the Oriental once bit her jowls and told the greyhound who was boss. After that if the cat wanted to sleep in the greyhounds' bed- she did. Now the other cat, Tutu did not care for and would snap at him. Oh well. Tutu is now at the Rainbow Bridge.
My grey is the house Mother for our 7 cats. We asked for a grey that would get along with cats. For about 3 weeks we used a muzzle and then kept an eye on her. She is so good with them and the funny part is if you want her to come to you just use a high tone and call "here kitty-kitty"
It's just an urban myth that greys and cats don't get on... usually the least successful they are at racing the better they get on with cats...that's what I was told by sonia spears at the retired greyhound rehoming centre...and she was spot on..my grey and cat are good friends...was a bit of hissing from the cat as he was there first...but now they get on fine...the cat even rubs around the grey legs when he comes in
The thing I love about greyhounds is that they have the speed and though dog face to scare off a robber but really are not aggressive, affectionate and caring. Our grey would go with anybody and she would be happy. At the same time she knows trouble when she sees it! Greyhounds are very wise
Lovely pictures...although I have to say, the few pictures of the cats sleeping at the "south end" probably didn't do that for long! Damn those sensitive greyhound digestive tracts :P
All of your animals are adorable, and I love how gladly they coexist with each other. That speaks well of your household and the disposition of every1 involved!
My greyhound Dodger was a cat eater when I first got him as an ex racer but after a little love an attention that he has been craving for all his life has chilled him out. These animals make wonderful pets and are very loyal and loving and dont need much exercise as they sleep most of the day. A better breed of dog I have never met ! . Mine had a pigeon sit on his head the other month and he just looked to me to say " Dad get it off ". They are the most loving loyal pets ever !.
One word of advice to people though, Just because you train a greyhound to get along with your own cat doesnt mean it wont latch onto a strange cat should it ever cross paths with one.
My mother adopted two Greyhounds through the NGAP organization which actually TESTS their dogs for cat-friendliness. If you visit their website to see the dogs available for option, some of them have a "cat friendly" icon right on their adoption profiles. If you're looking for a Greyhound that is already friendly towards cats from the beginning, that's a great way to go.
Thank you for making this to show people what stars greyhounds are. I have 4 cats and hope to welcome an ex- racer into our home quite soon. Our family had a greyhound when I was a kid and our cats lay all over the greyhound. She never turned a hair. They are so special.
I have a cat and a grey hound working dog X she was breed for boar hunting... She doesn't hurt the cat and lives inside fine but as soon as that cat runs she runs after it...
I think the cat worked out that if it runs the dog runs after it. Cat knows when she is on her lead and teases her to chase her.
My cat is the biggest shit starter ever.... She also smashes glasses just to enrage me...
some greyhounds have low prey drive and do OK with small furry critters.... my girl Barbie showed a passing interest in the cats but we just told her off if she went to chase them, and gave them a safe haven in the laundry so they could always get away. It only took a few weeks, now they jump over her and she barely notices.
Love your video, and the idea behind it. I own two galgo's, rescued from Spain. And a cat owns my house, if you know what I mean. They are getting along fine. I always feed the cat first, so the dogs know for sure who's the boss.
A few years ago I made a video of my whippet and his cat-friend, I just wish I made more video's, they were so fun to see. Good luck with your video!
Hi! How did you train your greyhound to be cat-friendly? And was it difficult? Thanks so much for the video, by the way - I really want to adopt a greyhound but am so worried that he or she will be tempted to eat my kitties!
@chronogrl We started with a muzzle first of all, and each time he looked at the cat, we said no, and a very small tap on the nose. Then just no. Make sure the grey is on a lead though! They were fine within 6 weeks, and have been happy ever since!
my dad wont let me have one in fear that he/she might actually eat the cats. Lionel the greyhound (my username) is a dog that was at the sheffield retired greyhound centre which has now been adopted who i will miss alot :(
I wasn't sure about adopting a retired racer before because I heard they can't live with other animals, but seeing your pictures gives me hope. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to adopt one someday.
How did you train them not to chase your other pets, btw?
We have 2 greys, 1 raced and 1 didn't. Both adopted from the track. The one that raced actually snuggles with our cat, but they both do very well with our white/gray cat(that resembles a rabbit). Just found out our racer was very prey driven on the track. Found his race results for the 2 1/2 years he raced(finished 1st in 13 races out of the 85 he was in). And he loves our cat. So it can be done.
We have a wonderful, sweet, lovely etc,etc girl grey , two terriers and 6 cats and they all get along just fine. We've had her three years now and the cats are even safe running in the back yard when she is outside - BUT you do have to watch closely for quite a while....
Our Greyhound, Isis, gets along great with our 2 cats, Ben and Charlie. We adopted her at 2 1/2 right from the track. When we brought her home, she looked at the cats and that was it! I think they were a bit scared of her, but that lasted only a day or so. Greyhounds are awesome, gentle dogs. Please consider adoption!
I know some adoption agencies screen greys to find out which will get along well with cats and which might need training first. We're allergic to cats over here, so we got one of the not-so-cat-compatible greys. :P
It is lovely to see your grey getting on so well with your cat. It has given me some hope. We got our grey Thomson, 2 months ago and we have 2 cats, who are get nervous, everytime they see the dog. We have a baby gate up in the house seperating the cats and the dog and we are introducing them to each other slowly. I would love any advice, on other ways to get them together, so that they can share the house and not have to be seperated. We keep Thomsons muzzle on when the cats are around. Thxs
Some greys have a higher prey drive than others. Any responsible adoption place wants the dogs in a forever home and should screen them. We have a retired racer and five cats.Greys are wonderful , sweet dogs that appreciate a forever home in a way that seems they know how their lives were before and how they are now..Get one - or two................
great video.. I now have 3 ex racers(one is never enough! lol) one from an adoption group, two straight from their trainers. They all live very happily with our 2 cavvys and 4 cats!! I hear all those..I would love to have one buts too
I just got a Grey from a racer... she wanted to eat anything that was smaller than her and moved.... with a bit of patience and a lot of love and talking doggy to her, she now accepts the cats (to a point) but is so, so much better than she was. And all this in one month!
Great job! One month ago I adopted a greyhound. I chose one who did not have a strong prey drive, because I have 6 lovebirds, and even though they will not be free at the same time unsupervized, I did not want her to constantly be on edge. She sleeps peacefully in her crate when the birds are free for 2 hours each night, even goes willingly in it by herself when I tell her that they need to come out. She comes in the bird's room with me and just looks at them through their cages. It is possible!
This reminds me of our grey Gracie and our various cats. The video I have on here is of our cat Lucky (how funny!) cleaning Gracie. He does this at every opportunity; especially her ears! We love our grey and anything we can do to dispell those myths out there is great. I really enjoyed this montage!
Thank you so much for making me smile tonight, I needed it!
We have 2 cats and I can't wait to adopt a greyhound - unfortunately at the moment my working hours are preventing it.. Your animals look very happy together!
I've had two retired racers and two kitties for years. All live quite happily together. My one grey, Ruby, ignores the kitties, but my other one, Nellie, plays with them, grooms them, and curls up on the sofa together. A grey should be cat tested, of course, by your adoption group, but many live very happily (and safely!) with cats. Please adopt!!
That is true, I'm not saying every grey will happily live with cats, I just would like to show that some can, and many do, live happily with cats, some even without training.
I have a greyhound plus 2 cats and my mum has also has a grey plus a cat. They have all lived happily together for the past 3 years and each dog gets on well with the other one's cats too. Too many people assume that because they have a cat that they cannot adopt a retired greyhound but, with a little training, time and patience it IS possible. In fact, Mum's dog did show a keen interest in cats so she got her own and, with training, they are now the best of friends!
tutu my grey always had 2 cats in the house. she tolerated them. Mari the Oriental once bit her jowls and told the greyhound who was boss.
