  • i seen this live by furthur at the mann in philly 7-23-11 made me a deadhead for life and damnnit i'm proud

  • Love it always have, Jerry looks like hes trying to break his strings the whole time :)

  • AND HERE'S THE PLAY BY PLAY at 5:50. Brent finishing up a great solo...Oh my Jerry is is really digging in hard to help Brent finish strong. Jerry hits a power chord but oh my BOBBY hits a weird surfer chord and it fits great. Jerry is happy, this rocks!!!!

  • I was there. My grandmother had died the week before. This hit me deeply that night. What a show. It remains the best one I ever saw.

  • where did you go mama? I'm lost...I cant find my way home

  • love Jerry's guitar here

  • best show i ever saw.. miss you !

  • Happy birthday jerry....

  • Happy Father's Day Dad!! I miss you soo much!!!

  • This sounded evil. But in a good way.

  • Sad day when Brent died, Miss you buddy

  • i played this for my granmother after she passed, god rest her soul.......

  • @zendishwasher2 Me too, today.

  • mathise you'rea an idiot! Fuck you!

  • One of the single most powerful versions of this song I have heard and Must say am VERY proud to say I WAS THERE :D Warlocks ROCKED the house that Night ;)

  • @mathise1 twat!

  • absolutely sick - there's nothing else to say about this show

  • At around the 7 minute thirty second point, Garcia's body language says it all. Grateful Dead.

  • Fucking awesome....

  • Thanks for this!

  • Formerly The Warlocks, 10/8 and 10/9, 1989 are two shows that every Grateful Dead fan should have - both are ridiculously good - the interplay between Jerry, Brent, and the Rhythm Devils is outrageously good.

  • I think back when i was told about #11 rd. in laf. it in its own way was sad enough to remind me its not all fun games and exploring the unknown its real.

  • good version, but 09/29/89 blows this away!!

  • JERRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!(~);}

  • Y`know with all the shows in my collection this actually the first time I`m hearing the Hampton 89 Mercy

  • I recently lost my mother, and after her, my remaining little brother, while riding his Harley..

Death indeed, has no mercy. Not in this land.

  • I found this because I google my birth date! =o

  • This is fantastic! Music isn't a sport.stop comparing people's versions..they're all good in their own right.

  • Do you have the other segments of that 2nd set ? Your vid has better quality (thanks) : more light, is brighter than others on the web.

  • awesome..........a real treat! the whole show is hot!

  • hot tuna's version is better and rev gary davis' is the best

    chek out jorma's!

  • This is so powerful there are no words..........

  • so thats what the human soul looks like

  • so thats what the human soul looks like

  • it is good

  • kinda ironic Brent and Jerry Singing this song

  • reverend did it way better in the first place

  • oh sooooooooo GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is PAIN..real pain, RIP Jerry RIP Brent

  • Jerry brought this out when my father passed July 13, 1989. I thank him every time I hear these. Then he put it back on the shelf, but he kicked ass on every one. Thank you, Jerry. I Love You

  • Bob Weir...underrated singer!

  • The wolf came out for Hampton (garcias old guitar). It was used for experiments that later lead to rosebud. Suddenly Jerry could play all kinds of instraments from his guitar.

Wolf was used at my fav show, closing of winterland, which features the best dark star >other one>Dark Star. Wow!

  • Jerry is ROCKIN' OUT here. Fuck all you who say he looks sick, can't remember the words, etc. etc. This is Garcia at his BEST. NO-ONE can beat these licks from Garcia.

  • @TheElissaS damn straight.. I can't understand how anyone could compare Garcia's power with anyone else.. noone comes close. noone does what he did and if anyone disagrees then they obviously just can't hear correctly.

  • Twas hilarious rolling into town and seeing The Warlocks on the marquee. Zillions of rumors flying about regarding who would sit in or what they would play. But, nothing prepared us for the performances. Let's face it, they busted stuff out all the time, usually with bumps & bruises. OTOH, this second set was jaw dropping. Not only did they dust off all these gems... but they "played" them. It sounded so good, there were times during the show when I wondered whether it was really live!

  • Which Guitar was Jer playing? That is definitely not Tiger...

  • He finally brought this out again---one more time my dad died that july of '89

  • hey if you like songs like this you might be able to enjoy what i'm doing. help keep a poor boy going and click my page.

  • This the show where they played dark star after like 5 years or so, they announced them selves as the Warlocks

  • i guess doesnt have no mercy.... they took jerry way too soon..RIP JERRY

  • Not only were the Dead brilliant at writing original songs, they were also extremely astute in their choices of cover songs. This song is a case in point: one of the most spine-chilling, spookiest blues songs ever written. Listening to this just a few weeks after the horrendous earthquake in Haiti is so poignant it brings a tear to my eye . . . ;(

  • HAIR PEACE is here,high

  • High. This is a great Death Don't but the week before at Shoreline (I walked in without using my ticket and passed it to an unseen person thru the fence, true story 2 people in on 1 miracle ticket)but the Death they played at Shoreline the week before was epic 1st Death in 19 years Jerry's face was huge on the big screens right in front of us, Brent was so on, you have gotta check it, its on youtube now its under -(Grateful Dead Death Don't Have No Mercy) the popup ad ids show as 10-29-89

  • oh yeah, that death don't, is amazing. (9-29-89). the first one in 1320 shows. you're a lucky bastard to have seen it, 1 of 4 played from fall to the following spring, and then back on the shelf.

  • refering to jerryjeffelvis' comment

  • THAnks jerry

  • They played this 3 days after my MOM died!!!

  • Thank you for posting this! I was at this show mesmerized at what I was seeing during this so-called Warlocks run. I ventured to the front of the stage during Space and experienced this Death front row. This was my first Death and is still my favorite new-era Death. I've been listening to it and loving it since that night, I taped the show, but this is the first time I have seen it since then. Great video taping job, capturing those two epic Jerry leads. Some of his best!

  • With the horror in Haiti today, I remembered that this show was right after the bad earthquake in San Francisco...a spine tingling otherworldly Jerry moment at 4:30-4:37 to go with a great Brent vocal.

  • My mom had just died, my girlfriend broke the news!

    Death has no mercy!

  • Truely an epic moment in Dead history. Check out the 'board of this show and crank it up!

  • I wish we could see the audience because clearly, their faces have been melted completely off. Thanks so much Jerry and Brent!

  • frickin Awesome. I was at this show and this was just amazing. Thanks for posting it so I can relive the moment :)

  • I love when they come out of brent's solo and jerry does this slide down and nails a hard E, while bob hits some sort of surfer sound chord, very cool. 6:00

  • Oh, and the performance is fantabulous.

  • The spookiest blues song I have ever heard (and that´s saying quite a lot, my friends!).

  • listen to Jorma Kaukonen's version

  • Í´ve listened to Jorma Kaukonen´s version of this, and like it quite a lot. But I still think the Dead do it best . . .

  • Goosebumps!!!!!!!!

  • the bluest blues

  • Yeah, holy mother of GOD can Brent sing. <3

  • @Starstorm0m394 Brent is the soul man ,,

  • yes brent mydland definitely has one of the greatest singing voices I've ever heard

  • monday night in the virginia drizzle...most memorable in my eleven year tour...the house lights came up afterward... and All started cheering again. Did you see the dragons?

  • Brent Mydland's voice is EPIC

  • Never did see the boys play this...awesome version! Jerry so there.

  • Only thing missing...would have liked to have seen Phil playing. Even though he didn't take a verse...just love watching him play.

  • Class Act!

I REALLY hope the 19 and 20 year olds in the U.S. are giving all the old -timers a listen. They crap they are idolizing these days is truly sad. These people will be gone soon enough and there is nothing close to being able to fill the void of music coming in the next 10 years.

  • HAHAHAHA!!!! THERE'S a comment that will make you a hit among Deadheads! Oh, sweet Jesus, like Michael fucking Bolton! lolol HAHAHAHAHA!!! You are funny

  • Tiny Tim?

  • This hauting version came in the immediate wake of the San Francisco earthquake, which hit our boys hard. Jerry at 4:33-4:37 just lays me OUT. And yes, Brent was on fire this night.

  • what are you talking about? the earthquake hadn't yet happened when this show took place? are you thinking of the "California Earthquake" song they broke out in Philly following the quake? I was at both shows and both were unbelievable. Particularly this Hampton show.

  • i think i may have been wrong when i said that about the show being before the quake. i apologize for saying anything before verifying. i think. still haven't verified.

  • At around 6 minutes, Jerry just smirks. There is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert!!!

  • There are no substitutions for Jerry!!!

  • I saw the Dead do this song at Shorline a week or two before this show, the Shoreline Death Don't Have No Mercy was the 1st time they played it in 19 years, the first 3 notes Jerry played floored me I had heard Live/Dead lp alot and I knew it was gonna be good, wow then Hampton got the Dark Star and we didn't!!!

  • Brent was really on fire that night...

  • Unbelievable...

And how funny is it that they went directly into a 'Dear Mr. Fantasy'?!!

  • The fat man rocked.

  • saw my first show at the end of Oct. this same year. i feel honored.

  • I lost my mind at this show

  • That was fucking awsome!!! Thanks for posting!!!!!

  • Hmm...

    Yeah, bitches... *deal*

  • Jerry was just ripping drippingly no words to describe.....so so so so fucking sick, almost more like a saxophone the way he blows up and down the scales so effortlessly.... so much tonality, such climactic tension then beauty..... glad i got to see him at all.....

  • this is the best....

    with love for Jerry....

  • oh death where is thy sting thy victory ??!

  • At 3:12 is one of the most *amazing* guitar solos I've ever heard.... How Garcia darted all over the frets is a mystery to me.....

  • practice my friend

  • donveill, it was more than practice that got Jerry around the fretboard. it was "the gift".

  • Amazing! This is a rare and different tune..........

  • drove to the coliseum when i heard these shows were happening, bounced a big check to buy as many tix as i could and ended up 'miracle'ing a bunch of folk. best hugs ever. these shows were so good and fun and.....i cried tears of joy when they hit the dark star and still get chills. words dont work.

  • I was there and In my opinion they were at there peak.... this was a show that should be put on vinylfor all you old school folks!!!!!

  • Awesome!

  • agreed brents fiery and soulful, eerie video quality unintentionally genuine gives it more feel to how epic and redemptive these shows were, check out jerry at 6:02 taken back from it all getting loose, awesome videothanks

  • smokin. Too bad the camera didnt stay on brent thru his solo. Brent smokes it.

  • Gary Davis would be proud

  • very cool!!! jerry pulled out the old wolf guitar for these warlock shows. i wonder what was the last show before these that he used it?

  • He used Wolf in the Late 70's and early 80's with MIDI til he got Tiger in ~82 I believe.

  • He used wolf in the late 80's and in 1990 (and at least one time in 1993) and then he got rosebud not tiger. he got tiger in 1979 and rosebud in 1990

  • wonderful show

  • Me and three of my friends were going to go to this show but my car broke down and we couldn't find another ride, that sucks as much now as it did then.

    What a show... Dark Star!

  • Nice post my friend.... saw them break that back out that same year, at Shoreline. Cried all the way home.....

  • brent drove the band to incredible heights

    WOW!!!!!

  • Yes, i thought so too. He was incredible. Really had the blues....

  • *Jerry* I mean....

    There's no music without him....

  • Oh, GOD..

I miss you SO much, Jery....

  • what a tune seriously intense lyrics and just spine shattering guitar

  • I've heard this audio boot so many times and it still gives me goosebumps how hot these guys rocked on a good night....soo much soul

  • Ditto for the goosebumps....

  • maybe one of the best dead performance to date

  • Jerry's solo after Brent's verse is sick.

    Perfection

  • brents verse was HEAAAAAAAAAVY

  • Please post this whole show as it is worth every minute! Shows like this and 9/10/91 don't come around much! That would be a great favor and I think in these hard times, we would all appreciate it!!!!

  • like i said on another copy of this song, i cant even imagine the intensity of emotions Jerry would feel when he played this song, but it definitely shows.

  • 6:04

  • and that folks is how it is done...any questions?

  • For another way to skin that cat, see Jorma Kaukonen

  • BTW, Pulling up to the Hampton Coliseum w/ "The Warlocks" on the arena sign we all knew we were in for a treat. During the show I stood in the taper's section and at the moment Death Don't Have No Mercy began (out of the post-Dark Star space)remember turning to the guy next to me and asking "Is it 1989 or 1968?"

  • BTW, I stood in the taper's section at this show and at the moment Death Don't Have No Mercy began (out of the post-Dark Star space)remember turning to the guy next to me and asking "Is it 1989 or 1968?"

  • Joshua, I blew off Yom Kippur for these shows and as I have told friends many times since, it was truely the most religious experience of my life. High Holy Days services would have truely paled in comparison. I caught a ton of slack from my parents because of it but unlike Joshua, I have no regrets. Joshua, I feel your pain, because had I not gone I know I'd still be kicking myself too.

  • hmmm, I can remember blowing off HHD services for the dead in Cali in the 60's

  • Give me the original.

  • hampton 89; who's got dark star?

i miss jerry, the band, and GENERAL ADMISSION (for you kids out there, that means you could sit, stand or dance ANYWHERE but around the tapers)

    god i miss the shows........

  • Your not alone bro. I remember hearing on the radio station here in Hartford that tickets for The Warlocks were going on sale . Of course long before cell phones so it was leave messages for friends and hope they got them in time. I remember the window wasn't long to get them something like 15 hours.

  • Jerry's solo at the 4:00 minute mark made my goose bumps cry.

  • There is no sex on heaven or earth that beats these Hampton shows.

  • U didn't know my girlfriend. A lady in the streets, but a freek in da sheets. I still don't regret missing this show, but woulda been nice to be there.

  • Some great shit right here. Does it get any better??? I think not

  • Phenomenal, jaw-dropping, larger than life...

Let's face it, folks... There are just no adjectives to describe this show, the performance... Jerry is on fire, the music is playing the band, you know all the cliches.

I had a chance to catch a ride to this show, and I turned it down. Almost 20 years later and I'm still kicking myself. Fall '89 was a spectacular tour. Let's hope the Dark Stars from this show and the Miami surface soon...

  • very nice!!!

  • Magical.

  • COOOOOOL!!!! Thanks...

  • How true. Good thing it isn't always going to be like this huh?

  • Good God, the beta board. Please, please,

where is the rest? Was at both shows. The

Dead were banned from Hampton, but came for 2

shows billed as "the Warlocks". You had to drive to Hampton Coliseum for the tix.

God Bless you A. D. It feels like your eyes.

  • I have to say - I love this version!

  • Premium.

  • wonderful -- also check out on the GD internet archive the 8-19?-89 performance at Shorline Ampitheater -- the 2 chorus solo therein by Jerry is one of his finest moments

  • Incredible
