  • COC, Black Label, even Pantera - Got it.

    Kickass bro.

Crank it to 11 and jam out - you are on the right track.

  • Che chitarra è?

  • oh and Suplecs from New Orleans,LA is about the best southern groove rock/metal band goin'. super groovin' rocknroll..another one that will split yer skull live...and HONKY from Austin, TX is badass boys like ZZ TOP on steroids

  • Check out Dixie Witch from Austin,TX..new record Let It Roll...they got a punkrock metal guitaist riffin' southern style with a flyin v for a super heavy sound. i think they are goin to europe next month they melt faces and eardrums live:)

  • @AwesomeUsername12322 Mostly, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster and Black Label Society...

Then, I guess also some Pantera, Down, Corrosion Of Conformity, and Chimaira too!

  • @QuizzicalHuffle Mexico my homeland? Sorry but my homeland, as far as I know, is where I was born and live here in the midst of Italy xD

By saying "Southern Metal", I mean a well-known genre that finds its thematics' roots the Southern States of America... you know, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee and so on...

I just based this riff on some of the bands I listen that play this genre.

  • @Luca89ibanez You left out the most important Southern Metal state of all! Georgia! The best southern metal trash comes from here, Alabama, and Tennessee. But you are close on the style. It's a lot like The Showdown which is arguably more Heavy Metal. Listen to Maylene and The Sons of Disaster for the real deal. Amazing trashy southern music.! And no southerners are not trashy, it's just the way southern metal is portrayed. It's more like a fun joke to act like a hill billy and play metal.

  • @empeethree03 Hard to beat the NOLA and Texas scenes...

  • @empeethree03 you left out pantera from texas, their one of the best

  • @Luca89ibanez Im from Texas and yes this is southern metal, nice riffs bro.

  • Sounds Pantera like a little. I like it.

  • This isn't a "riff," this is just you noodling around with some generic Pantera/Black Label Society cheese.

  • Really dude you must be new at this. If you want something to remain yours copywrite it FIRST then put it on youtube. Dont ever expect people to be nice just cuz you ask them

  • @medicalization Yeah, it was my fault from the beginning.

Whatever... it doesn't matter anymore, since our band split-up a month ago.

    XD

  • @medicalization Yeah, it was my fault from the beginning.

Whatever... it doesn't matter anymore, since our band split-up a month ago, and we never finished that song.

I'll be more careful next time... XD

  • I get nothing from it man, sorry. Sounds like me toying around at a music store?

  • @jczother Never mind... nothing must like to everyone, dude XD

  • @jczother sorry is right, your momma should have told you " if you can't say nothing nice, keep your opinion's to yourself"

  • What amp do you use??

  • @acdcman96fin I don't have it anymore, anyway here I was using a transistor Ibanez 15W (a ToneBlaster if I remember right), on the Overdrive channel together with a ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive pedal.

  • @frozenblazer Wattaffuck! Hope you read the description n' you're kidding, LoL

  • @Luca89ibanez no dude thats why i have created youtube acount to take riffs like yours and use it with my band

  • How to play a southern metal riff.

Step 1. Use the frets 0-3-5-6 in a random order.

    That's it. lol

  • i will totally steal your riff and get famous :)

  • @crunkycocky lol that's what i wanted to say

  • i think it sounds gay

  • soooo Pantera sounding.. NICE XD

    Thumbs up for Pantera!!! :)

  • I have a question for you... what.fucking.guitar.?

  • @snazygitrst Here's the answer:

    Ibanez RG370DX, with EMG 81/85.

  • bad ass man

  • sounds like Maylene and the Sons of Disaster

  • yeah sick pantera cover brah

  • @youreonfiretonight its not pantera. its not anything. its an original riff

  • I would like to advise all those who wanted to learn this riff of mine...

Now, I have a band, and we're about to write down a song with this riff of mine, finally.

So please, if you have a band, don't use this riff to create your personal songs.

I would simply like that this riff shall remain only of my band, and NOT become famous by someone else's band... simply, it wouldn't be fair, right? =)

So we won't have any problem of "copyright", or something like that! xD

    Thanks again!

  • @Luca89ibanez whats the name of your band?

  • @gho5t47

    Our name is "ALKOHOLIK WASTE".

We play just some old school Thrash Metal, and I used these riffs for our last song, "Jaws"... a really groovy one IMHO, not the classical thrash rhythm.

If you'd like to listen us, we recorded a demo a couple of months ago (but Jaws was not yet written):

    myspace dot com/nuclearwastepower

  • Are there any modes or scales you use for this kind of music? I'd like to learn how to play this style.

  • @TurkeyJizzle honestly, no, I don't use particular modes or scales here... just a lot of palm muting, hammer-ons & pull-offs, and continuous pinch harmonics!

When I invented this riff (less than 2 years ago), I did it just by ear, and keeping in my mind the typical sounds of Maylene And Sons Of Disaster and similar groups!

The rest comes just from your inspiration! :D

    - Stay Southern!

  • @TurkeyJizzle lots bends on the low strings accompanied by palm mutes

  • @MattIsAllThatRemains

Thanks man. I kind of started improvising some sort of Southern Metal sound but it still needs a lot of work.

  • @TurkeyJizzle start listening to like damage plan pantera throwdown on and on and slowly u will just be able to riff it out, and always remember not to play fast !!!

  • @TurkeyJizzle Its a blues pentatonic, you cant CREATE something thats been written so many fucking times, dont listen to this guy, its easy, E open 3 56 then A 03 5 then 0356, then using octaves climb your way up or down, try it,n check out my southern metal video, its actually southern, not shitty bends and crappy harmonics made to mimic a shitty band of suburban faggots that dont know shit about the south, ill teach you

  • @WeveGotNoTimeToLose Actually I know really a few about the real Southern culture, and I never meant to be the one who teaches anything to anyone... I just came up with this riff, I liked really much and I decided to record and upload it, then people ask questions and I try to answer them...

Thumbs up for your scale hint, and i'll try it too!...

But it seems you have a tone like "Who's the best Southern teacher between us"... this ain't any kind of challenge, man, take it easy! xD

  • @Luca89ibanez Sorry dude heh, I just see soooo many, dont let me discourage you or anything, but Malene is what really set me off, try some Down, Crowbar, Acidbath, Superjoint Ritual and other artists like themselves, sorry if i came off soo douchey, keep on it man

  • quite a mastery of pinch harmonics u got there :D

  • The South Is Rising Again

  • the south`ll rise again dude good job, thats like a metal version of skynyrd

  • Hot Damn Real METAL!

  • thats awesome man can you send tabs please i would appreciate it very much i listen to this all the time man fucking awesome

  • @DEREK4031 Ahahahah wow man, thanks a lot!

Thanks to everyone who commented this video!

    - Stay Southern \m/

  • reminds me of he is legend great riff.

  • damn u pinch harmonic!! i will master you.

  • Tight riff.

  • pinch harmonic freak:D

  • Anyway check out on youtube "how to do pitch harmonics" I remember I wanted to learn it to and it looked difficult but today it's the easiest shit on the planet.

  • @IsraeliMetalhead It's PINCH harmonics, not pitch.

  • wow. this was so awesome

  • Ibanez GRG170DX? Cause it's just like the one im holding and playing in drop D right now

  • ur hands look small

  • drop d is too easy! otherwise cool vid.

  • Sweet I can play it now but I'm still having trouble with the pinch harmonics. Lol I can't stop playing it either it's beautiful I wish I could make stuff up that sounded that amazing. And yes always keepin it metal!!!

  • Holy crap that was sick! I must learn it. How do u make ur guitar squel when ur plsyin on low strings tho?

  • You mean on the thicker strings? The technique is the same on all strings...

you know, keepin' the pick's edge close to the thumb, and when you pick, touch slightly the string with the thumb... there are a lot of videos 'bout this on YouTube :D

  • They are called pinch harmonics you tube them they take ages to master but It worth the time when u get ur guitar Screaming!!

  • @jaysticles they don't take "ages" to master, it's rather simple. lol. It took me about a month & a half to master them.

  • @jaysticles they arent as hard to get as everyone says they are. i had a buddy telling me they were hard, i watched how he did it, and got it only about two months into playing

  • @jaysticles not ages really...just knowing how to turn your hand to slightly touch the string without muting it completely..and knowing your guitar's HOT PLACE for pinches...that's all :D I'm playing for almost a year now..(Self teaching) and have no problems with P.H

  • @jaysticles pinch harmonics?...ages to master? ...it took me about 30 seconds... but.. people tell me that i have a talent...i disagree.

  • @jaysticles I don't know why everyone says pinch harmonics take years to master xD. I've been playing for 3 years and pinch harmonics was on of the first techniques I learned haha.

  • @blacksunshine3452 Doesn't take long to learn the technique. Anyone can hit a pinch harmonic. However, only few can get them to ring out like they're supposed to on every fret of every string.

  • @subzero1247 You have to bend it while you slide your thumb immediatley after the picking(the thumb immidiatley slides on the string after the pick) and you have to choose where you pick when you do that,so it would fit you just have to feel it,the closer it is to the bridge the higher is the pitch note the further, the lower you have to use both appropriatley(depends on what string and what note you are)

  • @subzero1247 pinch harmonix, and basically wut he said

  • @subzero1247

A lot of distortion, and make sure the volume on the guitar its self is all the way up that helps.

Basically you strike with the pick, them immediately after your thumb slides off the string. Go between the pick-up's and you'll get different pitches n' what not.

    Also check out false harmonics.

  • yea!!!! u know what metal is!!!! the real metal is dying out and emo crap is replacing real metal! but u keep the metal alive. stay up man.. nice work!

  • LoL thanks dude... keep it METAL! \m/

  • omg the pinch harmonics sound so fukcin awesome

    what pickups and amp pls!!!

    are you using any pedal?

    keep it up!

  • Ahahah thanks man!

Those are EMG 81/85 pickups (yes, Zakk Wylde's ones *_*), and here I was using EMG 81 in bridge position.

Here, the amp was an Ibanez 15W solid state (now I have a Roland Cube 20X).

And yes, here I was using a MXR ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive... *_*

I hope I gave you an help 'bout the sound!

    Keep It Southern dude! \m/

  • sounds like a rip off a maylene song

  • Or Stuck Mojo

  • that's cause MSOD are southern metal... and this is a southern metal...? ;) but i agree that 1min 10sec - 1:30ish sounds a bit too much like one of their songs - can't remember which but it's a break down riff

  • Oh yeah dude, Maylene & TSOD influenced me quite entirely about my southern metal sound xD

I can't tell you exactly which song that riff is similar to... but I understood the breakdown-riff idea xD
