I had the same problem, 2002 E39 with M54B30... exactly the same noise... So some seals had been changed recently, and spark plugs had been out... I saw this video and gave it a try... turned out that one or more of the plugs where not properly in place.. there was clearly dark residue around at least two of the plugs. Tightened them and voila.. like by magic the sound was gone! Thank you!
I own a 328 I- 1998 --motor was tapping like this for months . I thought lifters maybe rod bearing .Finally one the day motor started to misfire, and I thought this is it -F-in BMW finally blew itself up . I connected a code reader and it said number 4 cylinder misfire . Turns out that it was just the spark plug loose. What a relief--this is a great post this really is a common thing with BMWs ---and it does sound very bad. O my BMW wont you please just stop breaking ----Thanks
THANKS for posting this i have had the same problem getting gradually worse for the past few months searched endless websites checked everything disa, vanos etc and it was a loose plug lol simple fix BIG relief anyone else thinking ur engine is on its way out CHECK YOUR PLUGS ARE TIGHT even bmw didnt diagnose it
THANK-YOU!!! for posting the solution. i had the same noise, posted a similar video and i checked my plugs. it was #3. it was loose, almost out of the hole. easy fix, big relief.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!!!! It was the 2cnd spark plug from the front. It had backed out and was loose. I could wiggle it. Tightened it and noise is gone. I think it was just not torqued properly. I hope this helps people
