  • is this Ferenc Fricsay ?

  • @operalover67 - Karl Bohm conducted this performance.

  • Kurt Moll and Samuel Ramey just can't be beat.

  • Towering, overwhelmingly powerfull, with fervour yet warm expression, long sheer endless lines and notes sung in forte -seemingly effortless, excellent italian idiom, unmatched in commanding force. Martti Talvela.

  • Aw Talvela didn't showboat the low D

  • I disagree with those who dislike Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's Giovanni: I think he's superb in this role, and the blend of his and Flagello's voices is also excellent: each distinct and reconizable, butnever in conflict or competition.

  • FINALLY! I've been wanting to find a recording of Talvela as Il Commendatore, but never could. Thank you!

  • Talvela is magnificent. Dieskau is of the most refined singers of his generation, but Don Giovanni is not his role.

  • What a magnificent volume Martti had for a bass! Just sheet magnificence... he could roar a few lions out of a forest!

  • @SoulNotes1 Yes - many lions out of a big forest! And yet I just read that when he was going to sing this at the Salzburg Festival in 1968 with Herbert von Karajan conducting, HvK wanted him to use a microphone... Martti was Not Pleased!! He 'thundered, "Karajan's arranging for me to sing with a microphone! He wants a metallic voice. He thinks I haven't got the volume. Brings me a microphone! God's sake!"' (roughly translated from Pekka Hako's biography) XD!!

  • Don Giovanni sounds scared although he doesn't want to admit he is... I LOVE it!

  • I have heard this scene in this specific recording probably hundred times-one of my favourite opera scenes in the opera of operas(E.T.A. Hofmann) so admirably described by Hesse in Steppenwolf and so outstanding a performance by the definitiv Commendatore Martti Talvela. Fervour, intnesity, beauty, drama... I am so glad I know this recording since my teenage years. Phantastic.

  • OMG Martti is so handsome ... and That Voice, oh wow ... I go weak at the knees even when he's being scary!!!

  • amazing scene. too bad dieskau is the d.g. with those awesome voices that are flagello's and talvelas. such virility, then dieskau's ever so tenoral voice... just doesn't fit in.

  • @marcellny Dieskau is certainly no Giovanni....

  • man Talvela is a beast....

  • Talvela! Nielsen is also wonderful in the performance!
