The movie "300" was based on a comic book by Frank Miller. They wanted to keep make it as true to the comic as possible. That is why alot of characters (including Xerxes) were portrayed as larger than life. As a Greek of Spartan descent, I found it hysterical that the Spartans went to battle without any body armor; as if they were going to a Gay disco instead! :)
