I like the old Star Wars way better than the new ones. But, I like the new BSG way better than the old one. It's not about the age, it's about the quality and innovation. And in my opinion the new bsg wins in this catergory.
these people mean so much to me kinda like family, cause i grew up seeing them as much as my family.exept they took my mind to a place that was safe and gave me a sense of passion for sifi like star wars.but we were so poor in 1978-79 that tv was all we had,so shows like charlies angels, hart to hart, buck rogers, and battlestar galltica were all i needed...and still do.
Old Battlestar ROCKED. Man made Cylons in the remake? What was in the writer's heads? I hear Cameron's Terminator story being rang over & over.......
Loren Green was unbeatable in this role.He represented a proverbial "Moses" who lead his people out of the hands of bondage into the promise of a land "flowing with milk and honey."He was an awesome presence and an epic actor to match. The new Galactica series is literally, a crock of crap and Galactica 1980 went over with all the charm of a battery-acid enema. We never know what we've lost until it's gone, and this original incarnation of BattleStar: Galactica will never be equaled or forgotten
Hey, in defence of 1980 it just needed better writing. If it had more Cylon involvement it would have rocked and maybe Cain returning in the Pegasus to initiate a battle with the Cylons blitzing them would have drawn the non believers back.....
@GGGritzer Well, I suppose they could have painted a giant rebel-flag on the back of the Galatica, and had Bo and Luke Duke, (aka Apollo and Starbuck,) being chased after by the cylons through the "Hazzard County" sector of space while Crazy Cooter, (aka Jolly,) would go on an inter0galatic "moon-shine" run to raise enough money to sponcer the Galatica Super-kids with baseball uniforms to defeat the Imperious Leader, (aka Boss Hog,) in the world series. Anything's better that what they produced!
You know, The idea of completely different stories based on the same characters is nothing new. DC comics, Marvel comics and the movie producers of Hollywood have been doing it for years. Batman, Superman, Spiderman, and so forth have all been "re-Imagined in television and the movies numerous times. I really hope they do a Battlestar movie based on the original series. Or even better, a series of movies......
anyone notice that the " medallion " being held by Adama, is also the " 25th Century " equivalent of the Cross used by Buck Rogers against the Vorvon / energy vampire?... in fact, a lot of the sets from the Original B.G. were used in Buck Rogers. Check the walls, bulkheads, and fighter launch scenes.
@dedbusted unfortunately Lorne Greene would be unqualified to be President because he was born in Canada but he would be INFINITELY better than the kenyan born communist organizer in chief the obamamessiah jackass currently occupying the white house. here is to the ONE TERM jackass in chief BEFORE The United States of America is destroyed by the demonrat policies of the obamanauts, obamatorns and obamatrons.
I watched every episode of the old show -- even the abominable, non-canon "Galactica 1980" -- for a writing gig some years ago. Still have them on VHS, in fact. There were moments of absolute brilliance, and moments so ridiculous you wondered how they got filmed. And that said, the original still had a power and presence completely lacking in the mystical-magical allegory of the reboot.
@bibbleblab11 From what I understand, she has basically gone into hiding and doesn't want anything to do with Galactica or publicity anymore. I would kill to see what she looks like today. She was definitely the hottest thing on TV back then.
@vbritsi no kidding..... tricia helfer as a cylon? since when do cylons look like s.i. models? And I think I heard starbuck is a woman? that show must be f*ckin wack......
I am from brasil and i was a child i watched Battlestar Galactica on sunday's afternoons. For me,it was so magnificent as Star Wars.Unfortunately the new series is not the same.
I always liked the original series better. I recall seeing it as a child and then later as a teen on the original Sci-Fi channel. The new one is good, but I prefer the characters on the original show and the original show itself. As a black child I was always a Boomer fan on the original and on the new one Boomer is an Asian female. Granted, an attractive Asian female, but ...different than the original.
The main difference between Old and New BSG boils down to this:
On the Sliding Scale of Idealism vs Cynicism, Old-BSG is way on the idealist side, while New-BSG is way on the other. New BSG is 'darker and edgier', and goes for a more realistic, morally gray atmosphere.
I think both shows are good for different reasons and enjoy them equally. When new BSG gets too depressing, I brighten my day with the old show. =D
No offense to the new series, but the depth, the mystery and the passion of the original will never be matched. To a real fan of the story, it is disappointing that Richard Hatch wasn't given the opportunity to continue the story. He knew where the story should end.
I like both series, actually. That is probably because they are so different (apples and oranges, and all that). Also, I think it was awesome on the part of Richard Hatch to appear in the new series.
I got to meet Richard Hatch a few years ago in Hollywood. He lived in my building while he was filming his parts for the new BSG. Very nice guy, and it tripped me out to meet a childhood TV hero. I still got the sense that he might've wanted the new Galactica series to be somewhat different.
I wanna know who hooked up with Maren Jensen -- and what it was like, LOL!!! She was sooo hott !!!! Wonder what she looks like now, probably still HOTT !!
The old Battlestar Galactica special effects may not compare to new CGI graphics but they were groundbreaking at the time, and they still hold up decently to me. The fight scenes needed more new/different ones is all. I like the original BG and Star Wars better than the new ones! They and the actors have more charm to me. Lorne Greene was such a great actor, a perfect Adama. Richard Hatch as Apollo too. They all were great! Lines for the females could`ve been better though in some scenes.
@jesman1 :The new shows suck. Their biggest flaw is that the cameramen don't seem to realize that the camera's zoom lens is not a penis. They don't have to masturbate the damned thing to get a shot. All that waving around jumping in and out like that makes me seasick to watch it.
I'll be SOOO glad whan that wretched style is gone for good. Until then I can't watch any of the new stuff. Well, that and the complete lack of decent music and lack of light, videogame-looking SFX etc. etc. etc.
jesman1 Yo! I much preferred the old too. Mystery and intrigue surrounding the Cylons and their origins was ruined by the Terminator style story of the new one. I have to admit to liking the new Adama as much as the old! The original Cain annihilated the new one though!!
True as that show was long running but a bit before my time I must say. I miss the good `ol days and those shows. Really lacking in todays 'tv'. Reality tv these days? C`mon!
@jesman1 Yes. In 1977, they used the absolute latest in special effects technology to make BSG. The cost came to about 1 million per episode. That was unheard of for television. But, since Star Trek, then Star Wars, the network execs must have finally realized that sci-fi shows were worth putting big money into.
Sci Fi in the 70s and 80s cant not really be compared to Sci Fi now. Neither can both BSG be compared together really, if you asked me. As a 10 year old the old Galactica was just perfect for my world. As a 40 year old now I think its ridiculous, but back then it wasnt. The new BSG grew just like I did. Its like the adult version for me, intelligent and reflected. And it fits perfectly into this time.

Yes and that's exactly why the new series should never of been called Battlestar Galactica. I have no problem with people prefering it to the original but some of your comments are very ignorant. Wow, you haven't seen much of the new series have you. The robotic cylons appear in the show quite alot, especially as the show progresses. The REAL reason for the human cylons is for the PLOT to create suspicion and suspense amongst the crew. If you want to talk about being cheap on production then watch the dogfight scenes in the original series. The amount of repeated scenes within the SAME DOGFIGHT is just embarrassing.
Embarassing for a shallow viewer with very little imagination who prefers Politically correct Science Fiction Soap opera Dramas over a Science Fiction action series with larger than life heroes. Seriously though I don't have a problem with your preference but I do have a problem with this show being called Battlestar Galactica.
LOL! You criticize the new series for cheap production then call me shallow when I do the same in return. Nice double standards there! Also, what you call "Politically correct Science Fiction Soap opera Drama" is actually something called Character Development. The characters and plot formula in the original show didn't change at all between episodes. I'm all for nostagia and watched the original show as a kid, but sorry it is simply crap compared to the new show. Seriously, try watching it.
What you call character development is very boring especially when it's characters like the ones in the new show (except Baltar, he's pretty good and even funny at times). The original Star Trek didn't need this ingredient to be successful. Where's the exploration? and contact with new alien lifeforms? Where's the humour and joy. All dark, negative and sometimes immoral. You can keep it this crap I want to be entertained.
I can imagine that you watch shows like Deepspace 9, Lost, Heroes and Buffy the Vampire Slayer oh and of course Hollyoaks ROFL! I'll happily stick with Babylon 5, Farscape, Real Battlestar Galactica, the Original SW Trilogy, Original/Next Gen Star Trek and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and classic Doctor Who.
Don't worry about hollyoaks I wouldn't want that inflicted on anyone and besides if you don't rave about those shows mentioned your taste can't be that bad :)
To be honest I've never been much of a Star Trek fan. I just can't get past the premise that in the future humanity puts all hostilities aside in order to explore space. That kind of utopian view of the future requires too much suspension of disbelief in my opinion. I tend to favour more "gritty" views such as corporations fighting over resources or Blade Runner style themes.
I used to be a feminist before most of you were born, but that really fell apart when we realized men & women were different for scientific, not just fun;) reasons.
Seriously, today it's all women better than men at even being masculine anymore, men not just redundant but inferior.
I'm glad my own kids even grandkids prefer the Original series.
