@sgal88 I really don't know about that. I think probably not. In the real world, not Judge Judy, I imagine the government goes after the loser and only gives what they can get to the winner. I think the Judge Judy way of doing it is how they attract people to the show. Knowing the show is going to pay the winner straight off and deal with the loser themselves offers a promise of a resolution you might not otherwise get.

@sgal88 because the judgements stand as a matter of public record, and will show up in a police, credit or background check. That's why some people do make a big fuss. All the cases start out in the small claims courts all across the US and somehow some cases get referred to JJ's team who then ask the Plaintiff and the Defendant if they'd like to be on the show, but the cases remain real cases with real and valid judgements.

Another weird thing is that if the party's being sued knows damn well that the show will pay for everything, why in the world will he/she even bother trying to defend himself/herself at a very emotional level? Seriously, just provide your information/facts or whatever, and then just move on. @madonnaman9 You make a good point. Simon does it as part of his "schtick" or act he's the bad cop the others on the panel are the good cop but it's still an act. Judy on the other hand does everything exactly like she did when she still was a family court judge in NYC. The producers created her show after they saw the orig. 60 minutes piece. She doesn't call people names just to be excessive or punitive she points out when that act like idiots or are stupid just like she did in family court.

My grandfather once told me that "the day you stop working is the day you start preparing for death".
