Quite a brilliant little film. The visual imagery is worthy of Griffith or Murnau- and speaking as a Missouri native, bravo on reviving one of this state's best-kept historical secrets. The Bald Knobbers thought they could bury what they did... they were wrong!
Why thank you SO MUCH! I'm very happy to hear such praise, especially from a native Missourian. And thank you for the Grifith/Murnau comparisons; they're two of my favourites of course!
FOTM has recently been redone since its festival touring form, and will be sent to the Missouri PBS office this month. It's a half-hour long, and focuses very broadly on the history of the Bald Knobbers, from 1883-1889.
I'll let you know when it'll be broadcast/made available online. Thanks for the interest!
I can see that in the context of it's time, this would be a very frightening mask. When veterans and refugees moved back into this area(Ozarks), they all had one thing in common: Everyone hated someone.
Thank you for the insightful comment! Yes, this mask is pretty spooky today, but most assuredly would've been very horrific 120 yrs. ago! And you're right, there were very bitter divisions at the time, over all sorts of issues. And unfortunately no one was allowed to be neutral.
No, this is much too abstract and non-historically-accurate for being part of Fire on the Mountain. That program has been publicly-screened at in film festivals the past year and a half, but will appear on Missouri PBS in the next few months. Thanks for your interest!
By the way I'm glad to have discovered your channel; I love the Oz stories and films!
i have 2 do a report 4 english class about my fave historicly correct story, but i have 2 focus on the rumors about the story. do u have n e suggestions?
The story of the Fire in the Hole ride, of the BKs burning down the town Marmaros (documented in the Story of SDC book) is a good reference for this sort of thing.
Also, there's the heavily-spread Shepherd of the Hills book and play, which is full of inaccuracies about the group.
Then there's the BK comedy troupe in Branson, sharing nothing but the same namesake.
you gotta love the ozarks! so much history!

Is this (or something like it) going to be part of "Fire on the Mountain?" How's that coming?
