  • Just to help some one out, jack the car up from the sub-frame, its located about a foot in from the jack spots (the ones on the side skirts). And if you're using jackstands place them where you would normally place the jack.

  • straight to the point n easy..thanx

  • @iilovegd You're welcome. /John

  • "serviced - well what the fuck is that?"

  • nice video, thanks. very clear.

ive an e39 myself and cant get the oil filter cap off. im guessing it's what you mentioned above, no o-ring used and no oil on the cap threads - grrr! I tried a chain wrench, strap wrench, all sorts of brute force - everything. no luck. ah well, back to the stealers to get thisone sorted!

  • Supremely helpful. Thanks.

  • @axtm2008 You're welcome. /John

  • top man!! can u plz,plz do a video on changing air filter for my bmw e39 2003, not pollen filter, which many seem to think r the air filters. im on about the engine air filter that sits under the engine cover. just CANNOT find a you tube video which shows how to change that...... they all seem to concentrate on the pollen filters.

  • @77110 Sorry I can't do this video because I don't have access to an E39 to show you. If I were you I'd check out the Bentley publishers website & forum or find a good BMW forum. /John

  • Thanks for that! How come my oil filter won't turn? I turned it counter clockwise and it won't even budge

  • @jonsutubechannel The last person probably put it on too tight or didn't put oil on the O-ring. all you can do is use the proper socket (preferably a 6 sided one) and apply enough force. You could also try a strap wrench around the filter cover body. /John

  • How do you reset the oil mileage thing?

  • @jonsutubechannel It can be different on different model cars. You basically just press the mileage reset knob on the instrument cluster and while holding it in you turn the key to Acc position and you then press the knob a couple more times. Search youtube and you'll find a video on it. /John

  • after watching this i want to do it, are there any fluid evacuators that will work on them? i have an 04 530i

  • Is this the same for an E46 M3? Just the 10w60 oil?

  • @megamands Yea, same for M3. I don't know why you'd use 10w60 oil though. /John

  • thanks nice video

is it same for bmw 528 i?

  • @vaxushti1000 Of that model time frame - yes. /John

  • does the copper washer comes in the kit??

  • @liltlemaster Yes, if you buy the filter from the dealer then I think the washer comes with it. /John

  • @bearing01 ok thanks im gonna trying this next time on my 330ci.. thanks for your time sir

  • thanks

  • @JimmyJamesee you're welcome. /John

  • Where do you put the jack stands?

  • @WestSkier11 Under the plastic square area that is designed to accept the jack during a tire change. You can put the jack under one of the chassis ribs (under the car) for lifting. If you're worried about damaging the undercoating (rust protection) then put a piece of flat board / wood between the jack and the car. /John

  • thanks for the video. i live in the city so no garage etc. am thinking about getting one of the vacuum pumps so i dont have to lift my car. obviously this negates the need to drain oil through the plug. my question is how often i should be changing the washer/seal that fits onto the drain plug?

  • @MyFavoriteRapSongs You don't ever have to change the brass washer on the drain plug if you don't remove the drain plug. If you do remove it then you should replace the washer. The other option is to take sand paper and just sand off the washer to remove any burs or scratches and then you can reuse it. Thanks /John

  • Man, this was great. I have a 2001 540i where the dealer quoted me $354 for a "service". I used to think there was some voodoo about working on BMW's. It looks like changing the oil in this thing is easier than a '72 Ford F-100. Thanks for the video, bearing01!

  • @bt1911 You're welcome. /John

  • This was very helpful. A friend of mine just got a '95 E34 for her 17th birthday and wants me to change the oil. I've been changing the oil in my Altima for a year now and figured I'd brush up on my BMW knowledge before I winged it. Thanks. :)

  • @CarFreak427 The E34 is pretty much the same. The oil filter may be in a metal housing and you use a small wrench (13mm?) to take the cover off. I think there may be a small rubber O-ring for you to replace that may come with the new filter. Good luck /John

  • Im gonna thumbs up this video JUST cuz u said "time to man up!" Lol yeah it showed me how to change my oil on my new car but that was the best part!

  • @jukeboxhero844 Thank you. /John

  • "Time to man up" LOL, I like this guy. What was the torque needed for the oil filter socket and for the drain bolt both the same at 25nm?

  • @thesoni Yes, the torque setting is the same. /John

  • Hi! thank you very much for the video! job great done thanx to this video and your time , PS Happy New From SOUTH Australia :)

  • @TheRozzie1969 You're very welcome. Happy new year from the USA.

  • Do you know if the filter housing in a 2007 BMW 328xi is the same 36mm? I need to order a wrench but want to make sure it's the correct size. Thanks for the video! Great information...especially the o-ring on the filter!!

  • @beckd02 PM Sent. Thanks /John

  • @bearing01 Thanks for replying.

  • Hey John, maybe you've already answered through the comments but, I was curious to what points you jacked your car at. I have the prefacelifted one but I think from 01-06, it was the same? So if you could, let me know. Thanks!

  • @FritzTheBandit I find one of the chassis ribs up in under and put the jack under that part. The rib gives the chassis strength and you can lift the car under it no problem. I put a short piece of wood (short piece of 1x4) on my jack's lift pad before I slide it under the car, so the jack doesn't tear into or leave a mark in the rustproof undercoating material. /John

  • THANK YOU VERY MUCH RIGHT TO THE POINT QUICK AND EASY WILL TRY THIS WEEKEN.

  • @niceman11433 Thanks. Good luck. /John

  • I love Bmw's but hate them at the same time. They charge for even looking at the car. Thank you sooooooo much for the video. thanks for bankrupting these thieves. They are no better than a thieving bank.

  • @mikeygeneral Thanks. /John

  • @bearing01 Have you ever had a ticking sound (sticky lifters) on you car before changing the oil? And after you change the oil the sound would disappear?

  • @Icezkube No, never had that problem. /John

  • @bearing01 Is it safer to use ramps to lift the car when getting underneath it?

  • @WestSkier11 Safer? Jack stands are made of a thicker steel than ramps and are rated for several tons of weight. How many tons are the ramps rated for? Problem with ramps is that some cars with low profile suspensions can't drive up the ramp because the front spoiler will hit the ramp before the tire does. /John

  • This is a good video and I love how BMW puts the oil filter at the top like on my 99 camry now my 99 bmw 740I I basically have a good idea where the plug is at and toyotas are easy but Now I think bmw oil change is easy! : P

  • @200twistatwista yes it is! /John

  • One question though, I'm looking at buying a 2ton floor jack and 2 2ton jack stands. Is that sufficient and what do you use?

  • @WestSkier11 Yes, that is sufficient. That is what I use. If you use two 2-ton stands then you can hold up 4 tons. That's plenty. /John

  • Thanks, very descriptive with clear steps. I vowed not to get my oil changed at a Sprint Lube/Valvoline ever again after the sticker told me to come back in 3000 miles to get my synthetic oil changed out again. Laughable.

Although there is one flaw in your video; There is one other country that extensively uses the Imperial system just like us, and that is in the UK.

  • @WestSkier11 I knew the UK used miles but didn't know they used pounds/quarts/inches instead of kg/liter/cm's. Thanks /John

  • Best video on oil changes I could find, thanks a bunch.

Next time I'll be changing it myself

thanks so much for taking the time to post.

  • @coffyplease You're very welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting. /John

  • hey, i own a 1998 (12.1997, to be exact) E39 520i, and the mileage is a bit bigger than 200k KM. What kind of oil would you advice? 10w40? thanks in advance

  • @metako72 Provided the car has not been drive hard, that engine is still in great shape. I would use Mobil1 0W40 or 5W30 and continue to use synthetic if it is already being used in the engine. /John

  • @bearing01 thanks a lot for the advice!

  • thanks mate - love this video! i just bought a bmw e46 2003 diesel model and the last service was done at 36000 mileage and now its on 68500 . im not even sure how often the oil was changed - is there a way to tell - the oil was topped up but was black but ive been told all diesels produce black oil.

  • @s0ra8h Yea, I'd expect the oil in a diesel to get black fairly quick.. that's okay. If oil gets black it means it's working properly to pick up & suspend any dirt / carbon in the system. If you just got the car and you question when oil was changed, just change it again. /John

  • All that modern engineering anD sophisticated electronics TO determine the best times to change your cars, oil out the window Just do it old school. There is no oil shortage and frig the environment.. Did he just dump the oil outside, (oldschool), or down the drain.

  • @crashk1955 No... you never dump oil outside. Best dig a hole & bury it. But that would be nuts. Used oil is great for either chainsaw lube or lighting the wood stove. LOL. But seriously, there's lots of places to bring your oil for recycling. Oil doesn't wear out. It only gets dirty. They clean it and sell it back to you. /John

  • @crashk1955 "there is no oil shortage and frig the environment" all this from a 36yo man. you kind sir are a fuckin spastic.

  • awesome video, thanks!

  • @theSweetmonster457 You're welcome. /John

  • @theSweetmonster457 You're welcome. /John

  • What size oil bolt is on the BMW 525i?

  • @josephfoster30 Should be same as the 325. You need either an 18 or 19mm wrench. I can't remember now. If in the video my socket is black then it's 19mm. /John

  • @Valley5K You're welcome. Thanks for commenting. /John

  • what kind of oil did u just use?

  • @750029271 Mobil 1 weight 0W40

  • I changed the oil yesterday and drove it this morning, and now the yellow oil light comes on in the dash. Is this b/c I didnt reset the oil change mileage yet or maybe 5 quarts is not enough. Do you have a video on how to reset the oil mileage/oil light? Thanks!

  • @Cash4Faysh Yea, you need to reset the oil service light. I don't have the instructions with me. Search Youtube and you should find instructions. /John

  • "serviced"...what the fuck is that ? ...Lmao...

  • First time I ever attempted it was yesterday. Super easy took about 15min. And the crush washer "Copper washer" came with the oil filter

  • @dsgtjordan Awesome. /John

  • Sr what filter it is, number serial or model please for one 323 i e46 and how many liters need for the 323i Thanks.

  • @DanieLoneWolf I suggest you check out w w w (dot) realoem (dot) com /John

  • "time to man up" ... LOL... love it :)

  • @otis76885 Thanks /John

  • dude...great video man! now i know what to do! thanks for posting

  • @Cash4Faysh Thanks /John

  • Great Video! Quick Question

In regards to a torque wrench, what would you recommend? Also, where do you get the 33mm and 17mm sockets.

Thanks. Going to try this for my first time.

Your video was very helpful in understanding the steps.

  • @jimmy3691 For a torque wrench I suggest getting an inexpensive one ($20 for 3/8 socket) if you don't plan on doing a lot of mechanics work. Get a clicker type. Use a 3/8" to 1/2" for the wrench to fit a 1/2" socket. Find a Harbor Freight nearest you (check out web their page) for the wrench and sockets. Your local sears tool dept will also sell the individual sockets, but the torque wrench there will cost like $80. Thanks for the complement. /John

  • @bearing01 Correction: Use a 3/8" to 1/2" socket adapter for the 3/8" wrench to fit a 1/2" socket.

  • Good Show! I burn 1 quart of oil every 700 miles in my e46 330Xi. So im always adding oil. My question is Can I change the oil filter with out draining the oil?

  • @JonFotopoulos Yes, you can change the filter without changing the oil. 1 Quart every 700 miles is a lot. How many miles on the car? My guess is you have a valve cover leak. Does your car engine stink after you drive for 20 minutes? If you look up in under the car is the bottom chassis covered in oil? /John

  • same process for an M3 ??

  • @mrplatinum919 yes.

  • thanks!!!!!!

  • @LegoBoy660 You're welcome. /John

  • so how many quarts did it take in the end?

  • @EricAlveal18 I think it was like six. Maybe six and a half. I'd buy seven and put in 5 and put the rest in while looking at the dip stick. /John

  • Is the same process for a 330 right?

  • @SubZPRB Yep, same process for a 330. The only difference in the 325 and 330 engine is the 330 as a slightly longer piston stroke. Other than that it's the same engine.

  • Thank you much!

  • @Antunezw You're welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting. /John

  • This DIY was very thorough and straight forward, Thanks for taking your time to help all of us out we're very appreciative.

"i need to get my car seviced, WTF is that" LOL

  • @iHateFattPeople Thank you /John

  • Comment removed

  • THANK YOU FROM RUSSIAN MAFIA

  • @ultrafriendly You're welcome. /John

  • The Dealer sells the washer to you no problem. BMW suggests changing the Screw Plug and the ring every oil change. Both are sold at the dealer for 5.66 plus tax, so it's worth the spending.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA he said " service ... wtf is that ?" lmfaooo XD but seriously, where can i get the copper washer ? do i go to bmw and say hey, i need a copper washer for the oil drain plug or do i go to a hardware store or what ?

  • @salchipapa8000 Given the size of socket to remove the bold, you should be able to determine the diameter of the bolt (24mm?) and just go to your local autoparts store. They should have little packages of brass washers specifically for oil drain bolts. Or else you can just take some fine grain sand paper and sand off any burrs or scratches on the old washer, make sure it is flat (hammer it?) and reuse it. Thanks for commenting. /John

  • Veru good DIY. I like how you stress the importance of using the proper tool and the proper torque value. The dealer wants 25.00 dollars for my 328XI and a local import garage wants 150.00 Dol. I can do it myself for around 60.00 (thats with repalacing the air filter).

  • @AmericanSCPO Yea, Very easy to DIY and save yourself some significant coin. Thanks /John

  • Your the ish man!

  • @slowroc Thanks /John

  • thanks 4 taking the time, very informative,,,,, i wish someone would do a e46 318i, does anyone know how many litres a 318i takes????

  • hey this is a straight foward video, and seems so easy, have to get tha parts., i got a message on my dash 2 days ago saying CHECK OIL or change OIL have no idea. but ill get all the stuff i need today or tomorrow . im confused about the dip stick . but ill figure it out . thanks for the good work !!

  • @neodbunny2 Thanks for commenting. /John

  • Good Job Homie. You are really saving cats out here. Be well.

  • @the1great98 Thanks. /John

  • great video sir.

  • @ruend Thank you /John

  • Excellent video. I thinking of getting a 328i and wanted to see how easy it is to service. Thanks again.

  • @drticzon You're welcome. BMW"s are well laid out to make working on them relatively painless, compared to some other vehicles. /John

  • BY THE WAY JOHN YOU DID NOT RECOMMEND A OIL FILTER THATS GOOD. CAN YOU SUGGEST ONE SIR?

  • @REVENUEDRIVER1 I like / use Mann Oil filters. It's a German OEM part. Order it on line or get one from the dealer. /John

  • BY THE WAY JOHN YOU DID NOT RECOMMEND A OIL FILTER THATS GOOD. CAN YOYU SUGGEST ONE SIR?

  • THANX JOHN YOU ARE GIFTED SIR..I MANED UP TOO

    !!

  • @REVENUEDRIVER1 Awesome. Thanks. /John

  • i dont belive you need a video to change oli,in europe we do that in dark

  • Lol yer time to man up and not get robbed... great video cheers

  • @4ndyyy Thanks /John

  • Thanks alot. For a newbie not wanting to mess up a high end machine this was a great video. Good point to have the right tools. For the $110 the dealer wants and even the $74 at outside shops that I trust, I think I'll be buying the tools. By the time you set an appointment, drop and pick up I think it would be less time to DIY. The only other thing I saw on here was to reset the instrument light.

    Thanks

  • @sc666666 You're welcome. Congtats on DIY. /John

  • Thanks for the vid, I will be changing my oil myself next time. I mean... it is time to man up!

  • @zomglikewow Right on man! /John

  • man i loved this video and i liked the whole "i have to drop it off at the dealer to get it "serviced" man WTF is that?"

  • @mgoebel810 LOL... Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. /John

  • Thanks man. I completed my first BMW oil change today on my wifes 2000 323i. Purchased the needed socket sizes (17mm and 36mm) + changed oil in her car and mine all for less than what we have been paying for dealer to do just hers.

    Great vid! Thanks!

  • @funandsun37 That's awesome man. Don't forget to check that air filter also. If it looks dirty you could try vacuuming it out but to prevent dirt from becoming lose and going in the engine it's best to just change it. Thanks for commenting. /John

  • No wonder you looked familiar, I've seen your gun vids but haven't seen the car vids! Thanks for all the informative posts!!!

  • @FH415 You're welcome. Thanks for watching all my vids. and thanks for commenting. /John

  • Love the newspaper with the hole method!!! Great idea and thanks for the post!

  • This was very helpful! Thanks a lot bro.

  • Just wanted this helped me a lot! thanks bro

  • @GAGEARUN1 You're welcome. Glad I could help. Thanks for commenting. /John

  • Really helpful video. In the video you state that a 17mm socket is required for the drain oil bolt, but your description says 18mm...which is the correct size? Thanks!

  • @niualum06 The 18mm is correct. I don't think there's anything on this car that's 17mm. Sorry for the error. Thanks. /John

  • @bearing ..... Damn right bro! Man up n change ur own oil...... Great vid man! How about vanos seal vid?

  • How many quartz of oil did you use, Where did you get the filter?

  • @SolarWinds63 I think it's like between 6 and 7 quarts. I got the filter from autohausaz on the web /John

  • Thanks for the info, the information about how to install the oil filter was very helpful! doing my first oil change with a mityvac

  • @michaele15 You're welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting. /John

  • Thanks for the video. With the help of your advice and another youtuber, I'll be doing an oil change and brake job on my 04 330i myself and saving around 1000 bucks at the dealer. My only problem is with getting the car up a set of ramps without the front clip bottoming out on the ramp itself. Guess I'll use a jack and stands. Thanks again.

  • @zimsjeep Yea, I gave up on ramps a long time ago. Jack stands all the way. Thanks for commenting. /John

  • Nice video, on my E46 05' I replace the 2 'O' rings at the end of the filter, if they leak they cause the oil pressure to drop in the dashboard not dangerous but the needle flactuates. I get all my stuff from Bavauto.com and the oil from the Dealer OEM Synthetic oil from just under 7 bucks a quart.

  • @vatorob702 Cool. Good to know. Thanks /John

  • too bad i live an apartment, wish i have a place to work on my car.

  • @wirsindheldenowns Find a friend with a driveway or garage. Thanks for watching & commenting. /John

  • great video dude, anymore, like plugs change etc. cheers

  • Thanks. Came looking for torque specs for my wife's "new" 525i and had got them here. Can't believe how easy the filter is to access on this engine (Especiallyl compared to my R53 Mini :) ).

Thanks for taking the time to make this.

  • @JayWillowbrook You're welcome. Thank you for watching and commenting. /John

  • Great video. Question: Where do you get 3-series oil filters?

  • @Havid10 You can get them at the dealer. Here in the USA I buy them at the website autohausaz. You could also get them at pelicanparts. Thanks for watching /John

  • awesome video. very helpful. thanks!

  • @teambosing You're kindly welcome. Thanks for commenting. /John

  • you have built my confidence up and i shall do this oil change myself and save plenty of english pounds

  • @jackojillo That's great. There's nothing better than the feeling of doing it yourself. The beer will taste better afterwards. Thanks for watching & commenting. /John

  • Thanks man, I just bought this 540i and couldn't find the oil filter to save my life. Thanks again, you're the man.

  • @thill9k Cool. Good luck. Thanks for watching and commenting. /John

  • Thanks for the video and the info, I really apreciated. My 2000 BMW 323i the a/c doesn't blow air at all, the compresor is fine, I took it to the mechanic and wants to charge me $1200.00 for fixing the a/c. He said it is the blower and the module that comes together and needs to take the whole dashboard down. do you have a video on how to do it my self? Thanks...
