EXCELLENT pack! I've experimented with many backpacks over the years -- North Face, Kelty, etc. -- but for wandering around in the woods, I always find myself gravitating back to my trusty ALICE pack. With the frame, it just handles the load a lot better. Also, if anything breaks -- straps, frame, or the pack itself -- you can pick up replacement parts at any military surplus store. Huge plus, IMHO.
I love the large ALICE pack. I carry all of my clothes and my wifes clothes and all the other gear we need for hiking / camping. I love the frame. The pack feels good on my back. I got mine on ebay for $20.
Make a Hellcat config and it's perfect. Molle waist belt, shoulder straps with DEI 1606 frame "I believe that the number" and you have the prefect pack. Check out on ZS for my Silnylon Alice pack Beast.
i beleave that the allice 2 packs (the older ones used in iraq) are surperior to the original alice pack because of there frame, shoulderstraps, and because of the durability of the pack and frame. im not saying that the original alice is a piece of crap, im just saying that i would spend $20 extra and buy the alice 2 pack.
Just bought 3 Lg Alice packs w/frame for 69.96 on ebay total, incl shipping. Didn't need but for awesome price, great to have backup packs. Primary are SOF Ruck from Blackhawk and SnugPak Bergen Rocket pack. Look into these for Great Common Mans packs!!! And Dave Canterbury rocks too!!!
I am female and I have a medium pack that I use for backpacking, I do get some intresting conversations on the trails when I use it. Thanks for the info on Tactical Taylor, I will be checking them out especially for new shoulder and waist straps. I would like wider ones for my shoulders. My frame does'nt have the ledge and has been rock solid. I have even spent a month on the Appalachian trail on a solo hike without any issues. Thanks for the Vid ....
i just came back from south mexico near the pyramids and i have a medium alice pack and i had exactly 45pounds inside of it and it was only the medium so saying 50pounds in a large must mean you didnt have a lot in it.
Most of the time there IS Plenty of room in the medium. Especially for those of us with "Vietnam" or "Desert" mentalities. BUT!!! If you live or travel in a cold climate; Heavy, winter cloths are bulky and take up a lot of room.
Those ain't the original issue ALICE packstraps. They don't have the Mil. Spec. Q.D.s and the originals don't have a sternum strap. Also while you're right about using the frame and shelf to hump loads like water or ammo or fuel; you don't leave it on when humping the pack, it's just extra weight and is not in the T. M.
@beast12101 Not personally but my freinds have and I own several complete packs (got them for like $5 each) where the only problem is a cracked frame. But I did use the components like the straps to uprgrade my alice (I personaly think they are the best straps that are available for the alice). But I have seen my freinds pack frame break right in front of me.
@Vyppaaa11 The M.O.L.L.E. frame is actually very strong for it to be plastic ive used them alot and they can with stand alot more than you would think. INcluding being thrown out the belly of a plane and tossed around the back of a moving truck with other bags and duffle bags being thrown on top.
The diffrence between the 2 is the M.O.L.L.E. has an assualt pack with just a little less space than the alice and the ruck sack has 1000 inches of cubic space with x2 500 inch pouches on the side
For me My survival pack includes. 3 GI mag bar firestarters-One worn around my neck, One in LBE, One in ruck. GI bivy, heavy vietnam era poncho with liner, 1qt Canteen&Cup, Ka-bar, Gi 2 quart canteen, 2 wool blankets if Winter, first aid, deet, Boonie, ceramic sharpener, 300ft para cord, cleaning oil, game skinner knife, trailblazer sawvivor, jute twine(candle makeing) 5 gallon bladder with shoulder straps, tape, compass, dryer lint and vasoline rolled balls, wheat, rice, and beans, etool, ect.
As I've said before these packs are just solid, if you load this thng so heavy it rips then your back should have broke first. And if it's not soft enough for you use 2'' soft foam on the pad and shoulder straps. I've done this and it's so much better. Check out my channel to take a look. Should be posting it soon.
Help. I'm looking into buying a new and improved frame for my large alice pack. found two very nice frames both run about $250, the N.I.C.E frame or the Aruc frame.thanks
how much weight can the bag hold 80-100lbs??? without ripping or tearing or damage to the pack. i just bought a large. havnt got it yet, but im really looking forward to lotsa hard packing trips...
When imout and stop i hang mine from a tree it makes it easier to get stuff in or out without it falling over.I tie a doubled over 4' piece of 550 cord to the centerstrut on the frame behind your head. And just tuck it under the pad and let it dangle while im humping it...........Works good !!!!
i own one great rucksack what ever u need it to do it will and the pack comes off the frame there for u can leave your ruck at camp and haul things back
I am in the Aussie Army Reserves Infantry and these packs are very good. Take the time to modify, adjust, pack walk, re-adjust and then some more. When you have your pack down pat. There is a world of difference between them and others. I have noticed my back is cooler and that is because of the gap between wearer and pack. And in hot climates, this makes a huge difference with recovery.
@cbr6864: No kidding. I found two medium alice packs on the internet (with frames and straps/kidney pads) for $60...free shipping. I couldn't pass that up and LOVE the medium packs.
I love mine, and it is PROVEN. I can have this on my back all day, and it feels like it belongs there. Everything I could ever need can go on or in it.
Thanks for the info Beast. I just added an FJ40 to my gear, and WOW! I am as happy with that as my Alice pack.
Great review beast. One day my surplus store will get some good quality packs and frames in. When they do Ill be picking one up. Hope you can keep the videos coming.
Dude, I believe very strongly that the ALICE pack is one of the best bags ever made. They last, durable, you can mod them very easily and well, and they're cheap! I'll be posting a video on my modded one very soon.

ive used mine perfectly fine for that long.
biggest thing to look at is,commercial packs run often $150.00+
Alice packs are generally $50.00 at the most

These packs can be had on ebay for cheap.
IMO the Alice pack has one huge flaw in design, no quick release straps to open the main compartment.
The stock long straps are slow and awkward.
I cut my straps and attached quickrelease clips.
But you must really think through, where to cut the straps or you might limit flexibility.
One thing I would like to get is that shelf that goes to the frame but I can't find anyone who has them.
