  • It looks like you had a lot of fun building that baby! Congrats on a job well done. I would have probably attached it to a used stationary bike instead of an electric motor but then again I am obsessed with seeing how many things I could run with a stationary bike! Thanks for sharing. It really looks great!

  • Not eco at all, very disappointing great way of using power and getting plump in the process

  • Tim the Tool Man would love it!

  • I'd like to make one. I would want to spin the barrel about 10 rpm. Looks like yours is going about 60 rpm. (if you could find a smaller lawn mower wheel you could cut down the revolutions.) 1) what are the specs of the motor and 2) what is the dimmer switch for? are you regulating current to the motor?

  • Will i never.

    dam good idea.

  • hahahha, you are cool :)

  • build a fire under it and dry cloths in it.

  • Lol, worlds fastest compost maker- 30 RPM

  • Cool! Nothing says green like connecting a big motor to a barrel!

  • I wonder how worms would like this ...amusement park?

  • what happens when it rains?? Also, you need worms to process your waste, by doing this you'd kill them all.

  • crank it by hand its easier

  • @hypnos315

by hand!? and waste precius energy????

  • What are the specs on the motor?

  • Redneck composting

  • @wudyl redneck dryer when it's sunny out :-)

  • you need air holes, you are gonna sufficate the bacteria that does the composting, dont forget to add water because that is just as important,

aim for 170 F as an internal temperature, 140 is okay, but 170 is the best

  • "aww it's warm in there hehehe...."

  • is it possible to get more barrels at that row?more barrels more compost!

  • Forget everyone's negative comments! Great ideas have to start somewhere, the refinement comes after you get it off the ground. Our composter is a curbside plastic bin my teenager drilled holes in but if we could make a tumbler I'd do it. God bless and keep up the great work.

  • This was fun to watch. I want to see the next one you make hooked up to a bicycle and the wheel from the bike turning the composter...

  • hey- since you are using a solar panel you could wire up a small computer fan (large 120mm or 180mm (get from cheap laptop cooling pad). add a car battery so the panel charges the battery with a small cheap timer of sort then you can always push air through the composter thus SPEEDING up the process. What do you think?

There are also timers you can attach to your garden hose for automatic watering too...lol

  • Yeah I watched it. I thought it might be useful but I see its not. Needs electricity? Why not solar? How much composting are you going to do with one little barrel? Why did you go for just a simple hand crank? I'm sure it will give you more exercise than your riding lawnmower for that water sponge you call a lawn. I see this is in the educational section-PERFECT! Everyone can see how to make something useless.

  • @kaisenji Says the guy with nothing useful on his page.

  • @WurledPeas Better to have nothing to give impression of foolishness than post something and remove all doubt. Cheers.

  • @kaisenji Flaw in your theory: your page doesn't have nothing that would give that impression. And even if it didn't, your comments give your foolishness away from a great distance.

    Cheers.

  • cool, hope it can handle the weight

  • nice.... thx bro 4 uploud this video.....

  • Very Cool.

  • Neat Idea!! Thanks for posting your video!

  • wow creative nice job...

  • 51. Make it solar, no cord to house needed. Happy tumbling!

  • kjakjaa kjakakjakajkaja sooo faster

  • Use a DC motor, some big reduction and run it on solar. 1RPD (Rev Per Day.)

    Effortless and no electricity used...

  • Why would you use a metal barrel and why turn a drum once in more than 24 hours?

  • hahahah i really loved the exitemend "sound effects" xD great job and great fun and nice feeling after making it i imagine =)

  • I love the comments! 1st, it was all free stuff, 2nd, you watched it! HAHAHA

  • foolishhhhh

  • all that for trash????

  • Ummm. That's not a composter, that's a rock tumbler! He He!

  • Sweet!

  • You inspired me so i built on this weekend and just posted the video. thanks jeff

  • Nice, with that good speed, you could sift the stuff too.

  • Fantastic! Thanks for the inspiration--oh, and your sense of humor is evident in your narration, and makes watching the video even more fun. :-)

  • solar power

  • You should slow that rotation down with a couple of pulleys. Using a rheostat on the motor will burn it up. Either that, or get a gear motor, though a lot you find will be 3 phase. If you run a 2 inch pulley on the motor to a 10inch, then from another 2 inch on the same shaft as the 10 inch, then from there around the drum, you should get it down to about 40 RPMs or less.

  • @dwwaltman or put a smaller wheel on there. lol

  • have your self a homemade cement mixer there as well lol

  • Might as well hook up a v8 to it.... OVERKILL!

  • Cant u turn it by hand or is it a bit difficult.

  • Thats a great idea! Im gonna hook one up to a giant hamster wheel and make my wife run on it. XD

  • you only need turn it half a turn a day?

  • @fatturdburger

I make compost in the ground turning it with a shovel, and I Think you only need a turn every week or two, and some humidity, that's all.

  • Nice mod although I'd also prefer it rigged to maybe a wind driven solution (solar might be too low powered).

  • @kittinplus4 I agree a simple vertical wind turbine thingy might be better and not have to worry about running power to it. Either way, there's a reason why HVAC fans and such use belt-driven setups: maintenance and adjustments. Doing a direct drive like above would be a pain to adjust pressure and speed, and more likely to pop the motor's breaker if the load gets too heavy.

  • That was great!. Let his wife have her husband come home and work on a project, people. LOL

  • ...add a handle and save on the electricity....

  • wow thats 400 dollars well spent!lol

i can do the same thing for 30 by hand!!

  • @MrPoonasty exactly, why waste money on a car too! it only gets me places faster, when my feet to just as good!! idiot

  • @dpiddy022 fuck you faggot!

  • That is really cool. Maybe you could power it with a solar panel to satisfy more folks.

  • you could probably set this up w/ an old bicycle too!!!People power!!

  • yeah and it would be a good work out... i think that idea should go in the zombie survival guide.. lol

  • i think the idea is also save energy, right? so why are you using electricity? maybe if you do it manually it will help preserve mother earth ;o)

  • The idea is to make compost for the garden or veg patch.

Saving energy really doesn't come into it.

Some people might compost to save sending things to landfill which might save energy, but that's not the idea behind composting.

Personally I think the idea we're causing global warming is hokum, but I'm all for organic food (I grow my own veg on an allotment) and a cleaner, less wasteful way of life.

Not that I'd ever make a composter like that... I just don't see the point.

  • That said... I get a kick out of things like this.

Automating things that really don't need it, like this tumbler, does make me chuckle.

It's up there with things like automatic bed-makers, car boot/trunk lids and the likes.

A testament to how much effort man's inherent laziness will drive us to! Haha.

  • global warming lol!

  • @alejmiami

The idea of composting for me is that I'll make $80 a truckload. I already have to mow 8 acres, trim the trees and rake the leaves. Why not get paid for doing chores? And though I am going with a handle to turn my drum, I thought his idea was pretty neat. Nothing wrong with flicking a switch.

  • thats a sweet compost turner i likey that one

  • what's wrong with just turning it by hand. you then don't need that hundred-foot cord.

  • think the reason is so he can be a lazy git and run it with timers

  • what's funny is he probably spent more time trying to build that stupid thing than he ever would have spent just doing it manually.

  • its been a little over a year since you posted the video. how did you tumbler work out? i just started my worm farm and harvesting by hand is really tedius, so i'm looking to build me one.

  • Holy cow, how fun is that!

  • awesome idea, thanks for sharing

  • guauuuuuuuu!!!! it s a very very good idea thanks for share with me

    congraulations!!! today start one

  • kaBlam!!! that's hilarious!! but what's in it, pennies? sure is loud. it's cool though, and he's having fun, that's what really matters. I'd like to see a small windmill (8 footer) make the power. do it dude!!!

  • Someone has a great idea - I just saved $200 on a cement mixer...

  • if this is the American way of going green then we are all fucked!!

  • aj010139: Don't show so much British jealousy.

Yankee engineering is the best. Some of us still got it and the rest are haters.

  • Uhm, I hate to bicker, but the idea of composting and other green ideas are to save our planet, cut down on energy comsumption and so forth and here you are using an engine to turn your compost bin. Now, if it was solar powered that would be cool. Just my opinion,

  • Faster, faster!

  • Man that would make an awesome cement mixer. Great ingenuity.

  • wow,you went through a lot of effort to make that when all you had to do was use your hands to spin it,hell not even 'hands' it would only take one hand,

  • How stupid composting is meant to be a quiet gently micro-arobic process. The benefits from this composter are negated by the emissions created to power it. Back to the drawing board.

  • hahahahahahah. take 50

  • Why?

  • Can´t you move it yourself, yeah I bet you are very environmentalist

  • Great design. Could your timer be hooked up to one of those small solar power thingies they use for water fountains?

  • It's not like he has to have the motor running all day. It only needs a minute at the most. If this is what it takes to get someone composting then so be it. And I'm glad he's having fun doing it. Did you hear that killer giggle when he started it. Enjoy yourself and don't sweat the small stuff. If you can help the environment in the process, kudos to you.

  • Dumb...........

    Great composter, but elecrtic turner?

  • you should use your creativity more sustainably,a simple tumbler wouldn't need any electricity.what you made was pretty cool but entirely unneccessary.

  • You're enjoying yourself & that is what it is all about. The voltage drop in that long cord will probably burn out your motor. :( I used to build gold separators. We used a Browning tranmission & motor w/ a belt that went completely around the 24"dia. tube. speed was regulated by a rheostat.

  • I would never believed someone would have to burn electricity to make compost.when it comes to lazy this beats all.. lol

  • great idea! :) keep it up.
