Dio is one of the few singers in rock who doesnt needed the high notes to sound awesomehis timber in a lower key is freaking good, scary and strong.listen to dehumanizer.now wonder if bruce or rob sung low...would be lame.
i love the maiden cover to me better than JT as is ronnie but ronnie seems to keep it more JT vocal style bruce took it to another level DIO=BRUCE maiden best band in the world but those to singers are amazing i like bruce cuz he as the better range but the = power and live vocals which are untouchable
@theshag20 disagree, bruces vocals have him going off pitch alot of power and drama, but nowhere near the control polish or the range as dio, even though i have seen a few later live recordings where his vocal where not as good as he use to be, after a few songs at the heaven and hell gig, he gave a performance vocally that bruce as good as he is being a lot younger and fitter could never have matched in his wildest dreams.
im a professional singer, i know what im talking about
@cant1rac um yes no while you have made some valid points and ur rite for most ppl power kills no doubt but bruce stuided to be that gud i think he keeps his vocals very tight watch the flight 666 dudes getting better with age and yes dio does have the better polish but thats the thing about bruce his lives songs are just as gud as the album and like the dvd flight 666 even better and bruce has a pretty gud range he can sing bass fear of the dark or like alto run to the hills dio not so much
@cant1rac and sir i too have studied music as well i might not make the kind of money you do but im very knowledgeable in music and vocals and what have you i guess it all is really just a matter of opinion as both guys are very gud and have pretty different tones to their voice that makes them special if u do have a song in mind where dio sings bass baritone let me know would love to hear it as i have not found one yet
@theshag20 never said i made a lot of money sir....lol
ido love bruces vocals, grew up listening to a lot of iron maiden.
bruce does seam to get more consistent with age.
couldnt agree that bruce vocals are better with covering this track though, his pitch is all over the place. plenty of drama and power but the pitch has suffered.
beyond technique who is best is pretty subjective, & both are two of the best, bruce is self taught and from a theatre background, hence the more dramatic performance
@cant1rac lol fair enough i did assume that and with everything else i can pretty much agree dio does seem to be more spot on with his pitch but over all i guess i just prefer bruce but i stand by bruce=dio as they both are great and one is better than the other in ever category to the point they are just in a league all its own however for this song i do prefer the clearer vocals of bruce than the grit dio
@theshag20 dio is one of the clearer singers out there, just listen to any off his ballads, or if you've ever seen him live, you know he can turn the grit off in a second and hit the most clear and percing notes.
i think this is more dio, being truer to the original jethro tull, where iron maiden is a very new wave of british heavy metal version.
dio proves how good a singer he was, to turn on the grit as you say and still be singing the way he was in his later life shows great technique
@theshag20 coloring the note correctly, without resorting to use the throat is rarely done correctly, neither is singing with power, usually someone belts it and without correct technique strain and damage to the vocal chords happens, polyps which can require surgery.
anyone who's seen judas priest or whitesnake live recently will recognise that these once great singers, struggle compared with how they used to sing, great voices but less than perfect technique has taken its toll
@cant1rac dude yes i completely agree thats wat i tell my friends all the time when they ask me how i sing like i do and i tell them even though it sounds like im ripping out my vocal chords for the gnr songs or maiden song i tell them i am using my diaphragm and that im not putting any REAL stress on my vocal chords and thus un like steven tyler who has had the surgery i will be able to sing long and healthy for a very long time like bruce and dio who has the same power in their older age
@theshag20 yes, ive been singing metal style vocals mainly (i can sing other styles) very much influenced by singers like dio, dickenson and geoff tate, since i was 20, im now 36, and my voice is stronger, thicker and more powerful than its ever been.
i'll never be as good as someone like dio, but the fact i've got stronger with age is knowing good vocal technique diaphragm control, proper posture, regular vocal exersices, where to place my voice (the mask), chest voice, head voice etc,
@cant1rac yea i explained some of that to a girl at work as i had a band tryout for vocals and she wanted to know y i was making funny faces i told her i was working my jaw muscle and making it loose as words would flow better and sound more natural and all the stuff i told her blew her mind and i told her yea if u wanna go pro there is a lot to know just like playing an instrument you have to learn ur craft i have been singing since 8 and i am 20 now and i hope i get better with age like dio
@cant1rac all of you speak words as true singers, it is an instrument and you do need to treat it well, I even clean my by brushing before I go on, no caffiene, alchohol, or even eating 2 hours prior do to gas build up
The Maiden version is really good. Dickenson said in an interview that the band were always big JT fans. There are probably other covers out there from Maiden. Look for soundcheck recordings.
LOL, I had Megadeth playing on iTunes and I was like, "Damn, Ronnie sure does sound a lot like Dave Mustaine back then". As I was going into my files to click and drag Gun n Roses whole album into my iPod, I realized that Megadeth was playing.
we have truely lost a legend...and for me an inspiration...the great thing is he lives on forever...in music, video, memories....he never dies...and others will attempt in the future to be as good as him...I really don't think it'll happen...god speed Ronnie..
Is this really an Elf song? Is this Dio singing? I have always known the Jethro Tull version with Ian Anderson. Wow. Thank you for posting this. I never knew this was an Elf track.
@Joexi Absolutely. This is great, but Maiden's version is too good. No need to compare, Dickinson and Ronnie will always be two of the most talented singers of this century. Just check out all tribute bands trying to cover Maiden or Dio, and the voice is the main thing that normally fails.
@gmelantoni In fact, Iron Maiden loved the Heaven and Hell album. Ronnie was a sort of idol for them. I forget what song exactly, but one of their early songs is based on Children of the Sea.
@JesseP11 No disrespect to Dio, but the other guys from Heaven & Hell were going to get cancer screenings and wanted him to come, but he wouldn't. rip dio.
What happened to the great keyboard player Mickey lee soule ???
Amazing to hear all this old stuff on youtube ... Whish i was there to see it happen , but at least its fun for a singer to see from where "DIO came" ... he really is a god on vocals ...
@sabbathmaiden That's actually incorrect, he is currently playing guitar for an 80's hair band called Ratt on their current U.S. tour promoting their new album. I had dinner with Steven and Mickey Lee after their show in Sun Diego last month.
heh...love your new site too!...good to hear from you...to fill you in...they used to play below the roller skating rink in my home town...it was known as the "Lower Level"...me and my future drummer used to sneak in (underage) by saying we were with the band...heh...if they asked Ronnie James used to say "yeah...they're with us"...he is cool to this day...
Ronnie James Dio is thereason I went into singing R&R...Neil Young was the reason I started playing...obviously not as good at either but it was fun...and to this day I'm pretty decent...but...realizing my limitations life's been good to me so far...heh...remind me to do a private post to you later...it's funny...

@infernalphast9 ive got a good musicians in my band they sit tune up play scale parts of the songs we are going to do before we go on.
i never got why some singers dont think they have too.
if anything its more important, they break a string, its a broken string.and a bit of an embarasing moment
you do something nasty to your vocal chords, thats your carear as a singer in jepordy

@theshag20 yeah a lot of people forget its an instrument, you need to practice, exersice muscles and take care off it.
i probably come across less than rock star.lol
bottles of water at gigs rather than alchol, getting enough sleep, but its all to take care of my instrument.
i can tell you have a great deal of knowledge about the art of singing and more importantly how to look after your voice.
im sure as long as you keep doing what your doing, you'll be singing strongly right into your old age
