I bought this Archiv recording in Paris in 1973 and I still have it. This aria is what started me on a lifetime of listening and studying Bach's music.
Maria Stader was a diminutive woman with a gigantic talent. Even if she is no longer with us, she still "jauchzet."
I thank my beloved teacher Maria Stader for all she gave me, for my singing and for my live! She was a real Diva and a great Personality. Through her i've become legal successor of the 'Genealogical Tree of Belcanto since 1659', a non interrupted line of teaching from Master to Student which you can follow back until to the founder of the Art of Belcanto, Pistocchi. You'll find it on persuonare.ch under 'Stammbaum des Belcanto'.
must be from a single cd by deutche grammophone the art of M Stader, including Mozart and other composers' lyrico - coloratura arias. Out of print now......
Wonderful!! I have not listen the beautiful Baroque music for a very long time !!The record shine the tone Brightly and gloss for each note!! That's really a great amazing !!
this is i think my favorite recording on here of this song...her melismas are so precise its like a hot knife going through butter! you can pick out each note!
i mean they sound so effortless. i absolutely love this....it's a great holiday piece if you are into classical music for the season i think. and i am! best wishes and seasons greetings, Franklin
@angryjalapeno yes i agree...and i think that's what makes this piece so beautiful is stader's clarity. it's not muddy sounding like alot singers and her german (though i dont speak it.....ive sung) is gorgeous...which is hard to do with such an aggressive sounding language....she sounds very angelic.
@handelfan610 But her clarity and brightness is no hazard: „A timbre of brightness, immensly versatile, silvery twinkling lyrical Sopranovoice, crystal clear and lean in intonation, incandescent in high notes – whereas singing and speaking, language and musics where always in one at Maria Staders singing. The vocal gesture and recitation of text where depending on each other.“ But wherefrom resulted Maria Staders Art of Singing? It has to do something with the 'Genealogical Tree of Belcanto'!
@brunosilvershadow oh i dont call it a hazard at all...but a well used gift and a blessing to the trained ear. You dont have to work or concentrate to listen to her sing....it just kind of happens. I thoroughly enjoy this version and her melismas are a thing to be admired by all.
@angryjalapeno It's tradition of the 'Genealogical Tree of Belcanto'! Predesessor Girolamo Crescentini (1762-1846): „The almost unnatural beauty of his voice can't be compared with any female voice. There is no other such full and more beautyful sound in such a silvery twinkling purity of intonation which in it's full power echos from all the angles of the hall, but at once looses itself in a most delicately Pianissimo.“ Wasn't it there again, the silvery twinkling purity of Maria Staders Voice.
Thanks for posting this! I wish more people knew the work of this wonderful singer. I listened to her as a child; all these years later she is as great as I remembered!
I love Stader as well. I was hoping to find her in exultate Jubilate, but Bach was a treat

@handelfan610, in this sense Stader was ahead of her time; this sort of clarity wasn't in vogue until decades later.

It is wise to say that Mozart viewed Bach as one of his masters. "Exultate Jubilate" doesn't sound so original after this heavenly Cantata.
