It's pretty much down to the music. Cinema is primarily known as a visual medium but use of sound and music is easily underestemated, especially nowadays when they're taken for granted in films. However the pacing (editing and cinematography) of the scene, and the performace of Reynolds works together with the music. I thought he was going to shoot himself on first viewing . . .

Basically, ryan renolds best friend and fbi partner just died saving the guy on the left bed. Ryan renolds has just been told by the fbi guy knocking on the window that the guy on the left was always going to be captured by the fbi and he didnt need protection.......so basically ryans best friend died for no reason. Ryan pulls the plug on the guy out of revenge on the fbi. the fbi wanted info from the guys on the bed, but ryan kills them both. so he basically kills them out of spite.
