Whoops! My Bad! "Six by Six" is the re-release of "The Maynard Ferguson Sextet". "Maynard 1967" is a double album, one with the second best version of this great song, behind the 1965 version noted above. One side is an orchestra and the other, a sextet, both with Canadian Musicians at Montreal. DanV
This "Summertime" is not "The Maynard Ferguson Sextet" from 1965, nor "Six By Six", from the Montreal Jazz Festival in 1967. It is from 1975 and is a quartet, for those of you who count to four, but not six. Interesting, but the previous two versions are far superior, as Maynard was still in his prime and playing with longtime band members (1965), Willie Maiden on Tenor, Lanny Morgan on Alto, Tony Inzalaco on drums, Ron McClure on bass, and Mike Abene on piano. Don't miss either version! DanV
Actually, the original Mainstream Records Lp was titled simply, "The Maynard Ferguson Sextet." There's no date on my original copy, but I purchased it upon its release in 1965.
If he was a singer he'd be Linda Jones or Aretha Franklin. What a wonderful trumpet player. Not to mention what in inspiration he was to countless musicians including me.
Maynard Ferguson is one of my favorite trumpet players...... My admiration for Maynard Ferguson is something I can't describe, I just love his sound, his projection, his incredible high range and everything he does with his horn.
This is the "Maynard Ferguson Sextet" from 1965. Wow! This is an extremely rare video of the group and not to mention a rare album to find. I think the album was titled "Six By Six". It has surfaced under the re-issue called "Magnitude" on CD. Kudos to the poster of this video! I think the drumer is Tony Izalico. Mike Abene was in the group as well.
Maynard and my father, who put Kenton's album that featured MF in Concerto to End All Concertos on the HI-FI in the early 60s, died months apart. I started playing the horn in the fourth grade because of that album. Later I came across the album that included Summertime. I always loved this piece!!!
You will never see it - but you can hear it on the Berstein piece called "Remember the Titans" recorded at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic. Google it - it is amazing!
This is a real gem! I have never heard Maynard play in that style, in a small group no less. Thanks for posting this. Would love to see more from the same broadcast.

Absolutely amazing. Thanks for putting this one here. One of the best versions of this song I've ever heard (leave it to Maynard).
You can really feel that Jazz vibe from the very first note to the end. Its almost too bad MF didnt do more like this.
Please upload more from this concert if you have it.

The drummer is Randy Jones, piano Pete Jackson, and bass Dave Lynanne ( hope I spelled his name right )

Just one look at those clotjhes and hair styles and I know it's
more like 1975, not 1965.
