  • What a phenomenal writer, singer, performance. If this doesn't tug at your heartstrings, check to make sure you still have one. Marvelous. Thanks for sharing.

  • My all time favourite from Larry, beautiful voice. X

  • Incredible. I lived this when the song was current so many years ago. I found solace within the lyric and performance then. To revisit is bittersweet. Wow, we do survive and thrive. However, the experience makes us richer within the depth of our souls.

  • I was watching the tonight show many yrs back. Larry was a guest, and said he had just written a song and would like to sing it for the audience. He was actually sitting on the back of the couch and accompanied himself on the guitar. He sang ,"The Heart". The audience was stone silent. It's been my favorite since. So glad to find it as I heard it the first time.

  • What Larry gatlin album is this song on?

  • This is my all time favorite gatlin song. I have been looking for it ever since I got on you tube. After I hear it I want to go and change my underwear. This is going right to my favorites list. Thank you so much for posting.

  • Great song by an incredible singer, this has always been one of the highlights of his show.

  • BEAUTIFUL SONG

  • There is still music of quality in this world of mix-mash junk -----good radio has deserted us but Gatlin music shall prevail thru the ages.

thank God for the Gatlin brothers---esp. Larry

  • Fantastic song and Larry has probably the greatest voice in country music ever - what a great talent he is - great songwriter and an angelic voice. Thank God for giving him to us a while - thanks for posting

  • I'm counting the days till Sunday... when I will see him again at Dosey Doe's... The first time I heard him sing this in person was at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio...about 30 years ago. He is STILL the most incredible singer...and one of the best if not THE best lyricist ever to draw breath...

  • I also saw him sing this about a year ago - it was just beautiful.

  • I saw him sing this a couple of years ago. He's even better now. One of the most moving experiences.

  • One of the most soulful and overlooked ballads in the history of country music! This song should have been a grammy-winning, chart-topping smash but has gone completely unheard by anyone under the age of 50. {I'm 32}

Larry Gatlin is a fantastic and criminally underappreciated talent who blows today's cookie-cutter country stars right out of the water.

  • @BloozeDaddy76 so true :)

  • Saw Larry sing this song at the Stockyard in Nashville. So incredible! He is so real and so missed. Love this song thanks for posting it have been looking for the lyrics. Awesome!

  • love it. beautiful voice.

  • I'm 24 and I'm a huge Larry Gatlin fan, I'm more of a fan of the great classic country, this new stuff can't top the classic country singers.

  • Does anyone know what year this is from?

  • The first time I saw or heard Larry was about 1975, and he was on TV on Austin City Limits. I think this is from then. I fell in love with his voice and have been a fan of his ever since. His voice has lost some of it's quality as he has aged and has had several throat operations, but I still love him. Saw him last year at Turning Stone Casino and he sang "The Heart". I was in tears. This was the song that got me through a divorce in 1979. I have every record, audiotape and CD he recorded.

  • Larry Gatlin is a dearest friend of mine...I was with him in a live concert in Louisville, KY few months ago...he is phenomenal and a great artist with a shinning star! I love this song with all my heart! :) Thanks for sharing!

  • I love Larry's song 'the heart'! Thank you for posting this!

  • I been searching Larry Gatlin's videos for days and just found these. It's a great rarity to find them when he was so young. One of the most powerful Tenor voices in Country music ever. And the harmonies with his brothers is like no other. Perfection at it's height.

You should see him sing today. He just celebrated his 60th birthday with several country singers from the past. His voice is not the young mans voice it once was but it's amazing how powerful it still is after his throat surgery.

  • Thanks, more coming.

  • How do we know Larry Gatlin is the most underappreciated artist in country music history???

I'm the only guy who has posted a comment for this masterpiece song that nobody even remembers today!

LONG LIVE THE GREAT LARRY WAYNE GATLIN

  • Hey BloozeDaddy76 I am glad your evidently a biG bIG BIG Gatlin fan and I agree with everything you've written. The heart is not a forgotten song Larry still does this song in there shows and sings it just as great, possibly better than originally. Did you know the Gatlins have a new record deal with Curb and there is a new CD on the way.

  • Thanks for the response hokahey. I did not know about the new record deal with curb, great news and thanks for the info!

Larry just turned 60 and STILL outsings any cookie-cutter puppet on the country charts today! I saw the brothers in January 2006 and they sounded as strong as ever after all these years.

  • Hi mate, I heard this song on a TV CW show on the BBC in Scotland in the seventies. 'The Gatlin Brothers' I think it was. I learned to play it on my Guitar then and still play it now. First class song writing and singing by Larry. Thanks
