Dare We dream . . . have We stumbled on a new Messiah! He has abeard - check, He is flawless on tenor banjo - check, he likes a gargle - check. . . . dare we dream ?
@japic68 thank you . I'll be travelling home from Australia for a couple of weeks, I reckon a trip from Louth to Cork would be well worth it, even on the off chance of seeing this guy. He's the first Banjo player to stand out from the crowd who are trying ( and rightly so ) to sound like St Barney McKenna. Royston has his own swing on the Banjo, he's a breath of fresh air. This is the first time I've taken influence from anybody but the afore mentioned St Barney , My Humble Thanks Royston.
@markmc13 MEANWHILE I'LL BE IN AUSTRALIA AS FAR FROM MUSIC LIKE THIS AS I CAN BE. iF YOU HEAR OF ANY ACTION ROUND ABOUT EARLY OCTOBER , PLEASE LET ME KNOW. COULD YOU CONFIRM HE PLAYS IN THE SPANIARD ON A SUNDAY
You might well have found the answer to your question by now, but an Irish banjo is a tenor banjo. The only difference is the tuning: to play folk it's normally tuned like a fiddle: GDAE.
@crv26 nothing really. for irish tunes you want about 17-19(max) frets. short short. :D and thick plunky strings. do a little google work and you can get gauges.
Wow Royston, much better than 'all along the watchtower' in Moscow. I'm impressed!! If you read this answer. Godd to have seen you again. All the best, Thomas
