It's a secret place, a special place, it's beautiful, so wild and pretty, and I know where it is, her secret place, not far from my secret place, and it's not Colorado......
Joni looks quite pretty in this video. Went back to her long haired late 60s folk goddess look. Looks like it would've been fun to shoot the video too.
After about 20 years, this song recently popped into my head. I used to listen to it over and over on a cassette tape and now i can listen to this song endlessly on my iphone. Don't think i'll ever get tired of listening to it. Was very pleasantly surprised to find a video of the song.
What a wonderful collaboration between Peter Gabriel and Joni Mitchell. Absolutely beautiful song! They have such different styles and yet they sound amazing together! A thumbs up! Peace2U, Alex
this is quality music....now we have $ telling us what is good....shallowness has screwed the world from good music....death to hip-hop music....death to no talent pretty people
God I love this woman. This song reminds me of my first Love and it will haunt me till the end of time but thats ok cause even though I've moved on now and life has changed and He has gone, it still stirs the same reaction years later but thankfully in the right way with the man I'm going to marry now. This is my Favourite song of all time along with 'Two Grey Rooms'.
@gaulfdeziner, you are very right. Joni Mitchell brings a sense of poetry and craft into everything. This is a brilliant collaboration, and it illustrates a rare ability to mix musical skills.
Above all else, Joni is the supreme singer-songwriter, who is not equalled in our time. It's our good fortune, to be able to enjoy her writing, and the magic of her performance
Joni Mitchell is by far the most intelligent, hardest worker, creative genius of
any female in rock or pop.. Nobody comes close.. . if one listens to all of her works you will understand, there is no better writer than she.. Makes today music by female artists look downright lame.
The music critics who complain of CMIAR's so-called 'slickness' need to give Joni room to leave her folksy nest once in awhile. If it wasn't for this album, the 80's generation wouldn't have known who Joni Mitchell was. Love it, love it, love it.
Check it out - This is Manu Katche on drums. He's playing a syncopated march, with a backbeat, and then forming the groove through the various sections around it. This is very high level pop drumming equal to Steve Gadd, Jeff Porcaro, Simon Phillips, Vinnie Colaiutta. His druming here, as with Peter Gabriel and Sting, shows why he plays in the circles he does. Very fine playing indeed.
This should be a lesson to all the young musician's That melody and arrangement and the right people for the song lead's to timeless record's,Not the bullshit flavor
of the week,in this age of lackluster everything,And rapper's I understand your
plight,But enough with this fuckin club stuff,In the club,Near the club, lookin in the club
fixing the club's toilet,The dance floor to,this is for Dance Artist's,The club theme
is getting a little played out,Talk about anything but the club.
I fell in love with this song many years ago. I don't really listen to or analyze lyrics much, but I watched a BBC program on female sexuality and they mentioned that woman refer to their anus as their "Secret Place" when learning to trust and share that part of themselves with a partner, visually or otherwise. Anyone else heard of this? Is this what this song is about?
'My secret place' with canadian Joni Mitchell, 'Fallen angel' with Canadian Robie Roberston, 'Suzzane' by Canadian Leonard Cohen and 'Strawberry fields forever' are four non album progressive masterpieces.
love this song, love you joni, love you peter! it feels so good seeing them together in this great song. it is sad that joni has quit, but for you peter, hope you will come up with a new album soon.
When I heard this song 1st time I put it on repeat and lay on the sofa all night without turning it off. I still love it it is the most extraordinary song for reasons that I have no idea.
@karrot101 Well I have some ideas about why this song is extraordinary. I saw the video 22 years ago and I just thought it was amazing the match between the song and the image, it's just perfect, the atmosphere of the movie and the perfect production of such an emotional song... it's a song where a lot of things happen, there are various themes going, but they're all kept whithin a circle and that's what makes it so strong, other than terrific rhythm section, sophisticated/delicate sounds etc
i recommend "the work of director anton corbijn" DVD, which also contains "one" (U2), "heart shaped box" (nirvana), and "enjoy the silence" (depeche mode) to name a few.
Two of my favorites in one song. . .it doesn't get much better than this. . .an amazing song featuring two amazing and very influential artists in many ways!
The best musical meeting since Hendrix turned a strat upside down ! An amazing song, written by the best, performed with soul and feeling by a perfectly in-tune duo. It doesn't get any better than this. Epic win... always
@edwinthomasr No, she was talking about NYC and the Twin Towers used to be one of the most well known symbols of the Big Apple -- along with the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Bldg. How long ago it seems. Yes, this song is a little sad but one of Joni's best of the 80's. So much better than a lot of the stuff on "Wild Things Run Fast".
At some point I said I'd get back to beauty and memorable moments and music that put me in a state of mind of wonder and delectable bliss and this music and the mood of it seems to take me there. I'm going to try to stay here in the midst of all of this nonsense and hate and it's a place no amount of hurt and anger can deface my secret place what a wonderful what a wonderful feeling of nostalgia and being in love. This song and John Lennon's Imagine really get to me.
Veritable 80's classic. SOMETIME A CLASSIC SONG CAN BE A VERY UNKNOWING SONG BUT ONCE YOUSE KNOW THAT THERE IS THIS SONG SOMEWHERE, ONCE YOU CAN HEAR IT, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FORGET IT
Anton Corbijn made this video. He also directed the new Coldplay one,"Viva la vida",which is a tribut to Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the silence"...Also directed by Corbijn!
I'm not sure the result, but I did just read in an interview that her record company at the time brought in Dolby, and she told them she was against it since she;d no longer sound like herself. It didn't say if he ended up producing her or not.
I had lost track of Joni back in her folk days of "Miles of Aisles". Many years later I heard the electronic "Number One" on the radio and it just blew my mind. This record (Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm) is one of the 10 records I'd take to a desert island.
I totally agree with you adrianlombardini. This song (specifically the "Chalk Mark" album" brings me back to a time in my life when the world was beautiful, simple, and full of love.
I wish we could all go back to That Secret Place. Thank you HENHEN for posting this. You just made my day (wiping a tear from my eye....)
