I was 13 when I first heard this song in 1970. I didn't know at the time but it left an impression in me and four years later I met a girl with long dark hair and beautiful emerald green eyes who swept me off my feet. When I first met her this song came to my mine.
Hey can anyone here upload ALL the brian hyland songs from his 1970 album "Brian HYland" ?? I would LOVE to hear them! " Mail Order Gun" "Slowdown" "Lorrayne" "im without you" and "You and Me". I cant find these on youtube anywhere! So if anyone has them let me know! ") Thanks!
Brian Hyland with Del Shannon at the controls breathed new life into an already classic tune, Del Shannon in a recording studio was a bleeding Genius! Rest easy Del, you were one in a million! 74sodapop thanks for the upload and as always kudos to The Tube for the power and space.
gibeau64, Vocally WEAK? Wow! I'd better get my ears checked man, you must be hearing something I can't hear........ maybe it's like the dog whistle thing. I agree with the rest of your post though.
I remember the Impressions and their great version ... of Curtis' classic ...also remember the Jay and the American cover but Brian's cover ... to me is the best ... I even like his rendition from the early 90's ...
is this a curtis meyfield song? Or originally by Brian? I'm also curious about "Sealed with a Kiss". Love both of these songs regardless.. like i said curious...
Vocally, this song is weak, given the limited range of the barotone trying to sing tenor, but musically, it was the best version of this song. Still, he has a great of passion for the content of the song. I have always liked the tension and sex-appeal of the song, not to mention the feminine mystique imbeded in the story.
I was born in 1962, so this was the version I grew up with. Only in my teens did I first hear the Impressions' version. In my mind, both are superb, but this is the one that gives me chills.

One of the truly great covers. The original by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions is arguably better and a little more haunting but this is so fine. Anyone who doesn't like this is "is an idiot" as I read so many write..
"Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini" was Brian's first Big Hit then it was "Sealed With a Kiss" and then "Gypsy Woman" . I thoroughly enjoyed working with Brian who was loved by his fans and he did a great job of leading the band onstage.
Hi. No, The Feelies were not....alternative....or what people about 20 years after that would call us. But, we were very progressive in our understanding of solid Rock and how we interpreted '60's and '70's music. We made the tunes we played....our own. We were....different. People loved our band. The Feelies. Thx. George Clark
I backed up Brian in 1969 with my band The Feelies on a short tour in the Northwest including Burlington,Washington at the Burlington Roller Barn and we had a ball! The place was packed with teens who LOVED to DANCE! Brian and the band shared a beer together after the gig while loading up our equipment. Bryian Hyland------One of the nicest people I have ever met and wish I could back him up again! Georgeclarkdrummer
Exellent song and presentation! Thank you so much. I graduated high school in 74 and became a man in the 70s. This song has a special place in my heart. Wish I had a time machine!
Definitely his best. Must be heard on a good stereo to capture the "depth" of the song........it's fantastic. The 45 RPM record did not do it justice. One of the best songs from 1970 for sure!!
I was 11 yo when this great song came out. music is the one and only thing that sparks my memory when it comes to remembering anything prior to 15 yo. gypsy woman was playing during the credits to a movie or series I was watching and a flood of great memories came to me. just when I thought I've heard every one of my memory throw backs, along comes another. Thank you! thank you! thanj you! Brian.
Hey I was the same age. All we had to do was listen to the radio and this was one of my favorites along with my steel guitar, my sweet lord and all the thousand of ofthers we listened to - wow what good memories

Thanks for posting this wonderful song! I saw Brian in Concert years ago - along with Dion, Neil Diamond and a few others. Brian sang his standards in the first half and then opened with this great tune in the second half of the program. I couldn't believe it when he was booed trying to sing Gypsy Woman! Made me feel terribly sorry for him - and angry at the audience! *****
Dear 74sodapop, thanks for this terrific post. I feel exactly the same way you do about this version. In my opinion it's the best! Thanks again & cheers from Darlene :)
@74sodapop A few stations (the independent ones) do play this song, as well as other really great oldies. WDRC in Hartford, CT, is one of those stations.
