I hate the pen tool ? Do you do anything in photoshop and I recommend you get a pen tablet from Wacom then you won't have to do all this clicking and you will see how awesome the pen tool can be.

solution for smart object issue :

that is because the real pic is in Smart Object Thumbnail format so you have to right click on the picture's name and find the option Rasterize Layer and than will work .... i had the same problem.
