The man never runs out of melodies. I know I am going to get flak but Ray is right up there with Lennon-McCartney, Dylan, Jagger-Richards, Randy Newman, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen in the songwriter's pyramid. No doubt. Just listen to "Waterloo Sunset," "Shangri-La," "Deadend Street," Mr. Pleasant," "Lola," and his original trio of great rock songs from the 60's. Case closed.
Once again Ray proves why he is my life long and all time hero. He has been inside my head since the first time I heard him and especially when we met. I am dan the fan, the Montvale, New Jersey Hillbilly Boy aka Frank Lima, God save the KinKs, Ray,Dave and all their fans who have supported them through the years!
Ray has not disappointed me yet, and i agree everything is relitive so sure I may like something or some period of his work better then others at times but to me even at his worse he is still the best there is, ever was or ever will be. Once he is gone there will never be another one like him. Ray is the last of the steam powered trains.
ever notice how you will be doing something and hear one of ray's songs like say, up in my hotel "...seven stories HIGH and my friends will ask me..." and sometimes they will come in bunches and you begin to realize that nobody has so nailed the sound track of our lives... One of the things I actually liked about working man's cafe was that it showed how human Davies was, as in, not always a genius..."
I just left a comment two seconds ago on another Ray video that his voice and songs are the soundtrack of my life, lol. So your comment totally nails it!
Ray is the best songwriter ever!!!...He touches me like no one else. I often feel like the person he is singing about....whether that's good or bad I don't know:-)
anytime a fellah touches you without permission is never good you should set him boundaries and if he crosses them then you must go to the authorities.
Ray did such a powerful version of this song last night in Boston....what an experience. Im getting goosebumps writing about it. Got to touch Ray about three times from the front row...not washing my hands for eternity :)
A great new song! Sounds a little like his "This Strange Effect." This one ranks up there with Ray's best ballads from the Kinks. Thanks for making new music all the time Ray!
Been so long a fan of Ray and the Kinks. The recent releases of Ray have been not so exciting for me. But This new Album is amazing. Ray's come back with great songs and lyrics. God save you!
All of his living UK '60s songwriting peers (Jagger, Townsend, McCartney) would have a tough time matching this. He is a treasure - God save Ray Davies!
This is a beautiful song. I absolutely love his new album "Working Man's Cafe". I walk around the streets of NYC obsessively playing it on my iPod. Ray has still got it, bigtime!!!!
I also cannot get the new songs out of my head, especially after seeing many of them performed live at the Tower and the Beacon. This is fabulous stuff.
to jbirenz; I also saw Ray perform at the Beacon on 4/8/08. I was thrilled - it was a GREAT concert. I sang myself hoarse. Complaint though: The stage was not well lit and it was hard to see him. Nevertheless I loved the show. He still has his voice and he has aged very well. Hope to see him again.
I want it played at my funeral... Lovely stuff.

People bandy the word Genius about but in the case of Ray Davies it really applies.
