How insane it is when people stick up for what is wrong. Not only are they oblivious, they also have to stick up for criminals and mafia type billionaires. That is unacceptable. I guess the only reason I can think of why they do it is because they are intimidated into looking up to rich capitalists. Or looking up to movie stars, the same principle. It's mental submissiveness what causes people not to think for themselves and even to stick up for their idols.
For bally bone man: Have I ever suggested saying anything against Rowling? (You mean the writer of Harry Potter?) Why in the world would I say anything against that woman? Of course she deserves the money. I am talkig about MAFIA type billionaires. It was not just a figure of speech. I am talking about Buffet, Gates, Cheney, Bush, and also the ones that are not known to the public. Because what they are doing is NOT FAIR AT ALL.
Stickam and similar technologies, I think, will prove to be like the TV is today. Yes, TV does enlighten us and bring us things we would never see, but it also homogenizes people, makes them feel impotent and is overall, a waste. Virtual technology makes all this communicating easier, but I think in the future, we will see more of its negative effects, especially in the increased isolation and use of this technology for frivolous purposes.
My initial response to hearing about youtube was a feeling of suspicion. I thought, "great it's gonna be America's home movies. Who gives a shit about your wiffle bat armed brat hitting you in the nuts".
But in this short time since youtube's birth it, at lest to me, and this is a grand statement, has become one of the most important things to ever happen to humanity. (hear that? that's the sound of a thousand eyes rolling)Youtube and websites like it are more important every day.
It really gets on my nerves when people try to write off the internet as a virtual reality. The internet is a communications tool not some spooky realm powered my magical devil dust.
I can't get my head around the logic that says someone leaving you a video message on youtube or talking to you over stickam is less real than leaving you a message on your answer machine or sending you a fax.
Am i less real than that guy who just walked past your window because i live 3000 miles away?
If someone accepts internet interaction over real life interaction, doesn't that mean they've changed their desires, their addictions to chasing the cheese so destructively?
As I saw Mork5's video, his point was that action on the Internet is NOT a substitute for productive, proactive effort IN THE WORLD...I take it you have your own room on Stickam. Great! I would just restate Verens' question: "Have you ever changed your mind about anything since you started [your campaign]?" Is so, what? Since your goals are very clear, it would interesting to have a number of your subscribers making videos expressing their take on your ideas just to see if we really understand.
I guess you don't want to respond to my question.AGAIN: I wonder HOW your viewers understand what you're message actually is. To be honest, I find this confusing, and I'm curious to know if I'm just dull-witted [a distinct possibility], or if others might share my confusion. Since I'm in the UK, I'd have to be up most of the night to spend time on Stickam; others may not have the time either. You always speak in terms of persuasion and not about change. Do you change? If so, how?
a profound use of bandwidth. technology & humanity are intertwined and we get to help decide where it goes next. the potential is unlimited. i think about it like this: robocop, terminator, or star trek? youtube is about user created content, so, i guess the future is now.
I've been enjoying our Stickcam discussions in your room.
The extension of communication via the internet is tranforming society. Many of the people on YT making vids on epistemology, postmodernism, etc. -- are extending their discussions over to Stickam.
How is this bad? It's a virtual salon, living room.
There's philosophical discussions dealing with religion, politics, the meaning of life, and there's even that hirsute Inmendham. ^_^
just curious, i suspect youd say your ideas may have been refined since coming onto youtube (i think everyone refines their ideas over time), but would you say any of your ideas have actually been changed by others' arguments since coming here?
Very good video. Although I have to try again with you perhaps next week sometime regarding that issue I wanted to talk to you about regarding animal intelligence. Stickam was being difficult the other day, and I barely heard anything you said.
Great video. I think Stickam's a great website for discussing serious issues, and last week there were some great debates going on. Looking forward to future debates and discussions.
For more power you need to know how to appeal to more people.
NO offense to you. But to affect change on a global scale you need to know how to play the game better, so speak. Better than anyone on YT is doing so far.
btw, here is the thing, there has been a Great Public Debate in the West for centuries... but it was not for everyone... it was elitist... great people made their way in but it was not truly public.
NOW IT IS. The public is taking OVER the Great Public Debate. They see us coming but all they can do is get ready, there is no stopping us.
the big crappy part of the internet is even of value... we learn to make crap filters... very useful habit. How to face criticism... how to not need everyone to love you... how to express an argument well or at least, comfortably. Etc.
Good vid Gary, however I think you are just plain wrong about JK Rowling. I also think you somewhat mischaracterised the responses; it wasn't about defending billionairs it was about defending principles, about the rights of the individual to have control over their labour and also to do with the fact that JK Rowling has given away millions to good causes and has used her fame to help raise many millions more. She is a human being first.
To quote Martin Luther King, Jr. "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." This statement can be applied to all classes of humans and it is why I'm just as concerned for the equal treatment of billionaires as I am towards the rest of us. Ballyboneman is right, it is a matter of principle.
One cannot fight the system from within, but we can create social structures that spread and perpetuate underneath the radar of the maintainers of the status quo. The internet has great potential.. it's up to individual human beings to create new systems and to resist selling out to the machine.
Looks like Robert Plant in the thumbnail.

Groan! Its about principle; about fairness; about equality. JK Rowling should not be discriminated against just because she has more money than you!

I'd rather spend time with someone in person. If that's not possible though, this (Stickam) could be an 'ok' substitute. :)
