@rkg77 Thank you for the info. I'll check them out when I can. How accurate is the movie "Lenny" with Dustin Hoffman as compared to the real life Lenny?
@TheMatrix72370 As much as I like Dustin Hoffman, I didn't care at all for that movie. I read his book and listened to his albums to get a feeling for his comedy and who he was. Lots of people have problems with drugs, with their marriages etc. I was interested in what he had to say as a social critic--, also, he was just funny!
I mean, Lenny Bruce was funny (not Hoffman!) He had bits like: Comic at the Palladium, Enchanting Transylvania (with Dracula as a jazz musician), a bit with a junkie jazz musician auditioning for Lawrence Welk's band, another long prison bit called Father Flotsky's Triumph. So many good ones-- it sucks that these last videos about the trials are what people are judging him by. I think they're interesting, but before them, there was other good stuff!

@thegirl44 type in chris farley death on google images with your SafeSearch off, type in David Carradine death same way, etc etc, death photos make it out there for tons of people
Those were pictures that the police attending the crime scene took that leaked out from the coroner's office. In Lenny's case the cops actually let the press in to take their own photographs, which is just sick.
What do you mean this isn't funny? This is very funny... this isn't like Dustin Hoffman in "Lenny", bitching to a disinterested audience who gets up and leaves. He's shaping his experiences into comedy, and came up with some pretty damn clever material to explain it.
This guy is the 'King" of modern comedy- this a must watch. The things that he says were groundbreaking -now some of his material is obvious, but at the time it was cutting edge. THIS GUY IS A HERO TO THE COMEDY WORLD as we love Black Sabbath. We must know our moneymakers, and understand their psyche. Music is easy and obvious to people like us. Comedians are a different animal.
They don't have a Supreme Court in New York. The Supreme Court is not an appellate court in New York. It is a trial court or Superior Court. The Highest Court in New York is the New York Court of Appeals. Whoever did this documentary isn't very knowledgeable.
If i remember correctly Lenny had exhausted his options in the state of NY and petitioned the US Supreme Court who refused to review the lower courts decision. Lenny's ex-wife, Honey, also petitioned the US Supreme Court after Lenny's death to have the NY obscenity conviction overturned but died before she made any headway.
Lenny's wife, Honey Bruce, was an interesting character. Honey used to live in Marin County in the 1970s. During that time, my friends got together to put on a satirical video titled: "Lenny Bruce in Hell" starring Joseph Florian. Honey contributed a lot to that play. In that performance, Lenny is in Hell and he is thirsty. He is then given something to drink to quench his thirst. Lenny takes a sip and immidiately spits it out yelling out: "HEY!!! That was gasoline"!! LOL.
Honey Harlowe Bruce is my cousin a time or ten removed.
I admire the amount of work that she put into getting Lenny's outstanding convictions overturned, especially considering the fact that she had stopped being his wife years before he died.
She had an excellent sense of humour for such a simple soul. I'm not sure how I'd feel about some of Lenny's complimentary things that he said about Honey being said about me.
@thegirl44 I got to know Honey during the 1970's when she lived in Fairfax. I met her through my friend Oleg. She used to drop by sometimes. I remember her book. I bought a copy and she autographed it. The last time I saw Honey was in 1983 on Lincoln, San Rafael. The lady also gave me sage advice from time to time. I am grateful for that because her wisdom kept me out of trouble.
I am happy to see someone like you doing her best to preserve my friend's legacy. On with the Great Work.
There's a quote in Lenny's "How to Talk Dirty..." that accompanies the pictures that says, "Honey Harlow was the most beautiful woman that I had even seen..she still is." When I saw her last, which would have been around Christmas of 2002 or 2003 she was still beautiful. They just don't make many women that look like "Lenny's Shady Lady".
Thank YOU for being a friend to Honey. She hated to be alone which made her love people and company. I'm sure that she loved you.
people on a shitload of amphetamine don't make for the best dynamic performers. after you've popped about 20 obetrol you're more interested in yourself, and trying to figure out what you were talking about 2 seconds ago, than you are the audience.
to people who don't know the stories about everything that he was going through, though, it's interesting as hell.
I believe on his last performance he was so high on speed/opiates he collapsed on stage? wasn't that the fillmore show?
"I believe on his last performance he was so high on speed/opiates he collapsed on stage? wasn't that the fillmore show?"
No, total bullshit. The only time that Lenny EVER passed out on stage was in Feb of 1961 in Miami at the "El Patio". He was diagnosed with septicemia and took a couple of months off to recover.
Lenny's TRUE story is so widely available now that I'm flabbergasted that some people are still quoting inaccurate sensationalized media stories and urban myth.
HAHA, how can anyone say that this guy is anything like richard pryor? Richard is the true king of comedy, actually he's more like a God of comedy. Lenny Bruce is just dull
Lenny broke comedic ground so that Richard Pryor could be Richard Pryor. Lenny's paying through the nose to lawyers to defend him against obscenity charges set a lot of legal precedence that kept entertainers like Pryor from suffering similar persecution.
I think that we can all agree that Lenny is dull here, but this is the shadow of the man that he was. After being constantly beaten down for showing pictures of titties in his show, Pryor could later use the word "titties".
@thegirl44 yah, u kno what, i said all of that before i really looked up all of lenny bruce's work, I just judged him based on what I saw. Even though his work really didn't impress me as much as any of Richard Pryor\s work, I can totally see where Richard Pryor came from. I mean like it's well known that he patternized some of his style from Bill Cosby, but to me it's clear where he adopted his satrical influnence from.
@thegirl44 Which also remids me, now I know if you're the type to respond to my posting then you know about fritz the cat. To me it's amazing how much he sounds like Lenny Bruce.... Voice and content
I always wondered if Ralph Bakshi based the movie Fritz on Lenny, too.
I'm pretty sure that Mr. Robert Crumb just had a run of the mill hipster in mind when he created the comic strip but Bakshi's Fritz just seems to be a little too Lennyfied for it not to be intentional.
@bacofishtaco its like the catholic priests swinging smoking incense in a golden pot at the congregation at church. sort of a thematic intro to the bit
this,unfortunatly is not lenny at his most funniest,he is now at the end of his career ,and is constantly commenting on the shit thats hittin the fan and all flying in his direction.
Most depressing recent memory: explaining to a female friend that, no, Denis Leary is not better than George Carlin. She didn't even know who Lenny Bruce was. Its sad when people don't know what the hell they're talking about.
legendary, dennis miller, george carlin, bill hicks, all pay homage. gonadsey. That's right gonads. we both got em especially in this time period. fuck you! lenny rocks! along with Mort Sol... look it up. and then open your fridge, make a sankwhich, and go fuck your selves.
@ph03n1xamb1t: Personally, I think he was. Different style from Carlin, but great just the same. It's ok if you don't agree, but my statement was about Miller not Hicks. So, do you agree that Carlin and Hicks were better than Miller?
Yes. Possibly. But for me all those guys are similar. Bill Hicks really was the progenitor of all these guys, the patented cigarette in hand with optional beer and irreverent attitude, Denis Leary tries to pull it off as well but he's just an obnoxious asshole.
Lenny Bruce on the other hand, in addition to being more modern that most modern comics was an amazingly intelligent guy who could riff on anything.
good lord. if you were intelligent enough to understand the context of this video (or even what 'context' means), maybe it would make sense for you to put your 2 cents in. why not go comment on videos that you actually have some clue about, instead of wasting everyone's time here?
lol, you're telling ignorant people (who don't know they're ignorant) to stop being ignorant. It's like telling the guy who has no bowel control to stop shitting his pants.
@obviouslisa - I feel your pain but I actually got an answer to your question once in a comment. YTube comments are just noise. Nothing more than the static you hear between radio channels on traditional radios. The web is so big now that metadata, comments etc are just noise. But I feel your pain.
What had hapened by this time was that Lenny had been hounded almost to death by police and courts. He was enraged and obsessed by the injustice of the persecution to such a point that it was all he could talk about anymore.
lol read the comments, the uploader is a bellend

@EdMahoney19

You probably meant that as a put-down, but I think it's pretty accurate (and not a bad thing).

I'm not sure how I'd feel about some of Lenny's complimentary things that he said about Honey being said about me.
thegirl44 1 year ago

@songcycle

Lenny Bruce is just dull
tramballe12 1 year ago
@tramballe12 in your opinion
why do people think their opinion is objective?
Ziniho0608 1 year ago
@Ziniho0608 Ok then, in reality Lenny Bruce can never be compared to richard pryor.
tramballe12 1 year ago
@tramballe12
After being constantly beaten down for showing pictures of titties in his show, Pryor could later use the word "titties".
thegirl44 1 year ago
@thegirl44 yah, u kno what, i said all of that before i really looked up all of lenny bruce's work, I just judged him based on what I saw. Even though his work really didn't impress me as much as any of Richard Pryor\s work, I can totally see where Richard Pryor came from. I mean like it's well known that he patternized some of his style from Bill Cosby, but to me it's clear where he adopted his satrical influnence from.

As depicted in the 1974 film, his last performances became boring,
as he spent most of his time ranting about his trials. This clip seems

Most depressing recent memory: explaining to a female friend that, no, Denis Leary is not better than George Carlin. She didn't even know who Lenny Bruce was. Its sad when people don't know what the hell they're talking about.

@ph03n1xamb1t: Personally, I think he was. Different style from Carlin, but great just the same. It's ok if you don't agree, but my statement was about Miller not Hicks. So, do you agree that Carlin and Hicks were better than Miller?
jezmundberserker 1 year ago
@jezmundberserker
Yes. Possibly. But for me all those guys are similar. Bill Hicks really was the progenitor of all these guys, the patented cigarette in hand with optional beer and irreverent attitude, Denis Leary tries to pull it off as well but he's just an obnoxious asshole.
Lenny Bruce on the other hand, in addition to being more modern that most modern comics was an amazingly intelligent guy who could riff on anything.
ph03n1xamb1t 1 year ago
@jezmundberserker ----------------who would put Dennis Miller in the same sentence as Lenny Bruce? He is a pompous asshole and not that funny
