HOLY COW!!! Where have I been.... this is pure musical genius.... Your vocals are spot on.. so much energy and creative interpretation. . greetz, Eric
People like you break my heart! Further proof that the truly talented are hardly ever noticed in this day of "pre-fab pre-packaged talent" I hope you get all the kudos you deserve. Excellent job. :)
How do you make these one man band split screen videos? You are super talented; The singing, the playing everything. This is one of my favorite songs. I am a muti-instrumentalist, not nearly as good as you but I am working on it. So can you tell me how to do it and what equipment to use. Mikie Dee
I love when my YouTube searching accidentally leads me to videos by extremely talented people. That was REALLY good! I was also very impressed by your production. It's very tight and clean with great separation, and it had a really nice analog warmth to it.
I really like all your instrument-playing, and the overall execution is excellent - make no mistake, it's a great cover.
However, and please don't take this as an insult, but your voice sounds either altered (with Autotune or Melodyne), or perhaps just dubbed excessively -- if that's true, please realize that you don't have to do that just because it's standard these days in recordings. You are *very* talented and it would be that much more impressive if you stuck to your natural pitch.
@HoneydewHuey I'm not sure if this is why he did it, but the original song was the same way. And this cover is the closest to the original that I've ever heard. Nice work.
I'm always on the look out for great covers of my favorite songs. I only came across yours because I saw one by The Kooks. You're a pretty talented guy, and this is a pretty awesome take on the classic. I had chills when I first heard Tears for Fears sing this. I had a similar feeling when I heard yours. Cheers!
I loved it! You did an EXCELLENT cover! I think I've abused the reply button! i love this song! and I hope to hear more from you! :D I'm your new fan! haah
@yrureadingthisname - Thanks... I just checked out their stuff. Very cool. I'll download some of their stuff and if it really hits me I'll do something of theirs. Thanks for the recommendation!
@TheArcticMonkey24 - What does my accent sound like to an Aussie? I never thought Orzabal sang with an accent at all... kind of that phenomenon where british singers don't sound like it when they sing. There's the "snotty" California accent in pop/punk, and the southern accent in country, and even the faux british accent that some US bands have (yuck), but as far as US accents go, being from eastern Pennsylvania I'm pretty vanilla.
I'm a Bala Cynwyd kid. I found this truly interesting video while just surfing around and figure it to be the perfect candidate for a million hits. Posted it on my FB page and have been following it to see how long it takes to get there. I thought I'd post a quick note to tell you that your work is really impressive and I'm pulling for you.
@DannyGoneAndPop - Thanks so much for posting it on your fb page... much appreciated! I actually went to Conestoga and was on their drumline. Much respect to BC...
Hi Scott, this another cool really video. I still haven't managed to upload some vids myself. Now, just move to a different city und looking for a practice place :) Thanks for postin, man!
@PossessWithin - falsetto was really a long long process for me. I'm still not completely sure if I'm in falsetto or head voice on stuff like this song, but I started out just trying to get comfortable doing backgrounds and harmonies with it. Over time, I got more confident and started trying to sing full songs (with no one listening!!) using it. Just use it, use it, use it. Don't push too hard though. Do you take voice lessons? Listen to a lot of Jeff Buckley and sing along to whatever you can!
@haskitt - it's important to check in with a voice instructor at least every so often to make sure you're not developing bad habits that may limit you or harm your voice. Other than that, I think it's a matter of learning the ins and outs of your unique instrument. No voice like the one you have!
I can't stress enough, it's important to check in with a voice instructor every so often to make sure you're not developing bad habits that may limit you or harm your voice. Other than that, I think it's a matter of learning the ins and outs of your unique instrument. No voice like the one you have!
@haskitt First of all, thank you for your kindly words and help, I appreciate that. Yes, I do take voice lessons like 8 monthes though. I mean, falsetto is a pretty hard thing, 'cause there's kinda a... barrier [?] when you try to use it. Is that correct ? Anyway, thank you once again ! have a nice weekend. Greetings from brazil.
Hey,really really good job!I´m thinking about buying the solo 610 as well,do you recommend it?What did you mean by saying "I ran just about everything through it... and then back through it" please?Kind regards
@triclops8 - thanks! I love the solo 610. Example of what I did: After I recorded all the guitar tracks (initially using the 610), I got them basically ready for the mix and then ran the whole guitar submix out and through the 610 again for a little natural compression and homogenizing. I did the same with the drum tracks and keyboard tracks. Not easy because it's 1 channel so I had to run each side of stereo channels through it separately. Well worth the effort though!!
@pepperscayman hey pim, thanks! I used an MXL 2001 through a universal audio 610/solo mic pre with the lo cut on, around the 12th fret position. In retrospect, I wish I'd tried my rode NT2 or a pair of NT5's. The MXL was a little too bright even with the 610.
Epic, dude. Inspiring me to do the same (trying to find the time). You remind me so much of myself, man. You even sort of look like me, but not really. You're awesome, and your name on the v-drum forum is just perfect (Shawshank is the best damn movie ever).
@hampisdrums That's the cymbal I bought for him when he asked me to marry him! I personally don't think it's loud enough in the mix. It's a 22" Paiste Dark Energy ride Mark II.
@hampisdrums - Thanks, Hampis! Man, I love this cymbal... sounds fantastic - problem is, I tried to avoid the natural reverb in the room (basement) the drums are recorded in, and I mic'ed the ride a little too close... ended up really clangy even after some eq. Should have done more trial and error and pulled the mic back some.
Wow, that's really good, sounds vivid too. How long did it take you to record this? The homestudio looks pretty expensive.
