If i could speak to banks i'd say that it's alright we all make mistakes. We all at times forget the most important things in our lives because as a kid we don't understand what a father goes through and how hard he works so we get a good future.
Your family loves you very deeply and they know you have always loved your family
David Tomlinson is such an incredible actor. In this scene, you can always see the sadness in his eyes. I'm rather close to being in tears now, and NEVER do I cry during a movie.
The strongest Scene of all scenes in this movie and still my favorite one. Always makes me cry a little.. Something that todays disney movies can't do anymore today.
The performance is just perfect in every second!!
Also, if you listen to the words, it is the conflict between making your "mark in the world" and raising your children properly. You see it today in many of the children of celebrities and well to do business people
"You've got to grind, grind, grind at that grindstone, though childhood slips like sand through a sieve. And all too soon they've up and grown. And then they've flown. And it's too late for you to give. Just that spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down... the medicine go down... medicine go down..." Makes me cry EVERY time.
@boffinme80 It's the fine line between providing financial security for your family and enjoying the special moments of childhood that only last once a lifetime. Especially in these times it is extremely hard to do both.
it makes you think about your mom and dad and how sometimes its easyer than u think some kids have it a lot harder yes i am a kid u may think that when you drop us off at school that we come home and just watch tv and things like that its not like thay we still need that spoon ful of sugar.
This is a very moving scene- It shows the contrast between Bert and Mr. Banks. Bert is poor, but happy as can be, while Mr. Banks is wealthy, but unhappy because he has forgotten how to love his children. Bert finally shows Mr. Banks that you can always make more money, but you can only live your kids childhood once, and so you should enjoy it. It is a lesson that all fathers can take away.
@commonsenseforUSA Sort of- but by the looks on his face when looking away, Bert knows exactly why Banks is unhappy, and is playing him like a violin.
The whole line of "Don't they know the sacrifices you make?" thread when he knows full well Banks doesn't yet understand either.
It's not explicit in the scene, but I get the impression Bert and Mary haven't discussed this behind the scenes. Bert is poor (or at least appears to be) and happy because he understands happy.
I love this part of the film, it's very sentimental but not in the usual romantic way of successful movies. It carries an important message that I think is equally important to parents and children. And the acting is 'exemplary', to use Banks's word.
This is David Tomlinsons movie. Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke do their bit but it is Mr Tomlinson that adds the heart to the movie with his outstanding performance whether playing for laughs or the more serious dramatic moments. Just a superb actor!
I agree wholeheartedly! Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke were outstanding, of course, but sometimes I think their performances overshadow David Tomlinson, who certainly deserves kudos for making Mr. Banks’ epiphany very moving, poignant, and believable. I also think Walt Disney deserves credit for bringing Mr. Tomlinson’s talents to the American cinema.
I like this version of the song way better than the one sung by Mary Poppins. Mary is just so bright which is ok most of the time but this one is way more thoughtful.
I don't see Bert acting like it's a joke at all. He's just being Bert, and in his own unique way pointing out to Banks that he's missing the truly important things in life. Yes, Bert acts amused, but while WE see it, he does hide it from Banks. That's the smile of someone who knows something the other does not, and I think it's perfect for the situation. Bert understands something Banks does not -- that this disaster, far from being the end, is merely the beginning of something better.
This movie is so fantastic! Best scene in the movie when Jane and Micheal apologize and give their father the toppins, this melts me every time, the music in this scene is so dissonant and intense at this moment of this powerfully humbling relization. Music cutting moving from dissonance to consenance as he gose out for a walk and is set free.. Powerfull Stuff! You cut it too short here as the music begins to shift. They don't know how to orchestrate films like this anymore man...
His walk to work in the middle of the night is significant too. I am not sure exactly how, but it seems to be a very important part. Maybe the only time you see him in the movie where he is alone, totally alone with his thoughts. (Sorry for the double post!)
This song is my favorite song in the movie. It really shows the mind frame of a father in the low parts of his life. I had this talk with my dad about this song. Is a great song. It shows that this movie is not about the nanny, but the father. Brilliant. Marry Poppins is such an amazing woman in the movie because she shows the father what's really important. What in his life really makes him unhappy. Again, my favorite.
It's funny as this movie can be understood in two ways by children and parents. Children see the first part when the film is more "toonesque" with the walk in the picture, Uncle Albert laughing and soaring, and the rooftop dance but then (when I think viewers made kids go to bed) the pace changes dramatically and I think this song brings the message that must be understood by busy parents
I think it's interesting-and somewhat ironic-that it is Bert, not Mary Poppins- who finally shows Mr. Banks the error of his ways, and reminds him what really matters in his life. It's well done. Very well done.
i think it's interesting, and somewhat ironic, that Bert makes no progress until he starts to sing the same tune as Mr. Banks. They are masterful in how they've assembled this sequence.
R.I.P David Tomlinson, such a great actor, such a wonderful voice - he and Dick Van Dyke work well together, love the song and the video well done and thanks for putting it up
