  • A comment implies that possibly John Prine wrote this song. It was written by Bobby Braddock, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Braddock has contributed numerous hit songs during more than 40 years in the industry, including 13 number-one hit singles. Some of the best writers never get to be "iconic."

  • John Prine and Iris DeMent, I just Love 'em !!!!!

  • maybe the greatest American song writer ever

  • Iris...that voice...heaven....

  • Been singing along with John for more than thirty years. And he just gets better.

  • Real American masters.

  • Their voices blend really well.

  • I heard this song on radio for the first time last weekend. I had to grab my phone immediately and look up the lyrics. There was no way John just mentioned Athens TX! That's my hole in the wall hometown.

  • She does sound like Olive Oyl, but I think they do a better job on this song than George and Tammy did.

  • makes me think of my mom and dad , im homesick every time i listen to true country ,, play on my country friends

  • I like Iris singing with John, but not alone. If she could keep from voice cracking at the start (is it just me or does she do it on purpose in the beginning?), I'd be quite pleased.

  • she sounds like Olive Oil in this song

  • Fresh as the morning dew.

  • @starchief59: "jet set" refers to a wealthy group of elitist travelers who have the means to go from one fashionable place to another.

  • What is a Jet Set?

  • @starchief59

Before the late '50's airplanes were powered by propeller engines.

Then the faster, sleeker Jets arrived.

The cool and privileged set, was the Jet-set..

    Jetting around the world.

  • @jbjumpback I see. Thanks

  • Great Listening, I love my Corvette (Engine)

  • It put me in a very special mood to here this one.

  • It just make me in a very special mood when i hear it.

  • Hey bro, don't forget Townes Van Zandt...

  • @1975bean yeah, and I think, Iris writes with the best of 'em, too, Thank you!

  • @1975bean Hoyt Axton too :)

  • I think I've only heard the Tammy Wynette version before. I really like this one now.

Is Prine the one who wrote the song?

  • Rome, Georgia.. love it!

  • whats the name of this concert ...and or DVD?

  • sessions at 54th west...you can see it at the beginning of the clip

  • I grant you, we may not have had a "Riviera in Festus, MO", but when the flood water came almost every year, we had our own bit of Venice, watching the boats passing the changing stoplights at the end of main...

  • I think the lyrical mix up of the names of the cities is to elaborate on how, no matter where they are or have been, they always had love and always will.

  • Thankyou for stating the obvious,much appreciated,lol

  • Amen - wish this was more people's philosophy

  • This is one old Limey Fella who has spent quite a time in Northern Bama --- boy do I like these two since I discovered them 5*

  • I wasn't going to comment on that girl's voice but I'm from Alabama and that's golden and it sure pairs greatly with John's voice. I'm homesick. Play on ---and on.

  • "There's no Riviera in Festus, MO," Thanks for the great song!

  • i wonder if the young man in the light gray suit next to john is john's son, there is some resemblance. anyone know?

  • Heck, growing up in Missouri, I always thought Paris was in Missouri!

  • I have been loving John Prine for about 30 years, and he just keeps getting better, Love Iris DeMent glad I found this song and others with her.

  • One word - awesome!!!!!!

  • love how his voice wavers at 'Paris'. great live, great duet.

  • I lovin' this song! I just saw John Prine @ Red Rocks in CO 'n he played this song, yet didn't sing a deut. I wish Teresa Williams had come out 'n sang w/ him as she sings like an angel 'n she was there too!!

  • heck, everyone knows that paris is in Arkansas

  • Well of course it is -Paris ~~~

  • I live in Rome, Georgia.

  • lovin this video!! leave me a comment

    ANY GUYS UP? Rk

  • Agreed, John is not George but he's damn sure John.

  • Someone once described Prine's voice as sounding like "sandpaper on concrete". Well, I must have leveled and sanded concrete for a living in another life because it's music to my ears. However, that being said it takes a very special female singer to be able to duet with him and Iris Dement is one of the few capable of doing so.

A great song and a great duo.

  • i love it when she floats her eyes upward. Glad I discovered these videos as they are great, and the comments are polite and kind.

  • lizinator said it all

  • Hey, my grampa was a carpenter! The pairing of these two is just heaven.

  • Stop putting pointless labels on great music.

John Prine, Johnhy Cash. Iris DeMent, Hal Ketchum - who cares what the music's called - it's either good or bad and from these guys it's great.

  • Exactly. The only label that matters is "good music."

  • How can you hate country music and enjoy De Ment and Prine?

  • John Prine, for me, has never been country. He defies all categories--he's just Prine and Prine is always among the best. John was defying the status quo from the first song he wrote and there's an intelligence in his music that goes far beyond any genre. Prine could always draw fans from every class. He is a poet and a master of melody. I have always placed John Lennon as the best and would put Prine right up there with him. Iris is a perfect compliment to Prine.

  • I've always enjoyed Hoyt Axton, Arlo Guthrie and a bunch of other 'country', 'folk' writers and singers. If Jonny Cash sang your song it didn't become a 'country' song. The last song Jonny did was call 'Hurt' by Nine Inch Nails and they sure aren't 'country'. Watch Prine with good old Bonnie Raite. One of the beat slide guitar players from the years gone by.

  • I think that slapping genres on everything is bullshit, anyway. The best defy genre.

  • Amen to that! Prine & Dement are first class across the board no matter what they sing.

  • John Prine & Iris DeMent make beautiful music together--and I really hate "country" music, you just have to love the heart that Prine puts into his music and Iris adds the sound that brings it all together.

  • I played this for my missus whilst she was folding the laundry yesterday & she luved it

  • oh boy records ,sells the dvd, prines company

  • THis is a great down home country song.

  • I like to listen to this while I do the dishes.

  • nobody sang it or said it better

  • I dunno, much as I absolutely love Prine & DeMent, George Jones & Tammy Wynnette (originators) do it better. Believe me tho, I'm a hardcore Prine fan regardless.

  • Could somebody please upload the version of "Spanish Pipedream"from this show (Sessions at West 54th)...It was fantastic and I cannot find the DVD anywhere.

  • John Prine is a genius. It shouldn't work but his duets with Iris are awesome.

  • agggggggreed

  • This was done in 2001 at Sessions at West 54th. The dvd is a must for all John Prine fans.

  • What year was this?

  • great is a word often overused, not here there both great

  • Great version...thanks for uploading this!!!
