An update from 10.4 to 10.5 is the equivalent of XP to Vista.

So, the service packs ARE free (and more frequent than Windows) Nothing is different.

You know, at no point there did he mention PRICE comparisons. And yes, in Apple methodology, 10.5.1 to 10.5.2 is technically a service pack - a collection of updates and fixes. This is what Windows does. This just happens much more infrequently for Windows users.

10.4 to 10.5 is a completely new OS. The core of the system is fundamentally different. If you understood macs, you would know that. There is more to the OS than the BSD subystem.

Service pack 3 is FREE

Vista Service pack increases speed a great deal and is FREE.

Yes 10.3 is Panther and thats what i use. i dont see the osX updates from 10.0,10.1,10.3,10.4,10.5 as service packs but as a whole other operating system worth buying if you want to update.

The true counterpart to Windows' "Service Pack" for windows would be the upgrades of the third digit of the OS versions: 10.4.1, 10.4.2, these kinds of updates are free just like Service Packs.

Windows "Shadow Copy" has been around for quite a while. It was incorporated into Vista since the beginning (Enterprise version and above). The difference between "Time Machine" and Shadow Copy is that it requires an external HDD for the feature to work.

Microsoft does release service packs - ones that slow your computer! Just look at Windows XP SP1 and SP2 if you downloaded them from the internet - they slowed up the machine terribly and had to be adjusted. Mac OS doesn't have those issues.

It may be possible... but it'll be complicated and less than legal. Apple have different licencing policies than Microsoft. MS let anybody install their OS on any hardware, Apple only put it on Apple certified hardware. Service Packs are like minor updates, OS X also has those like 10.4.1, 10.4.2, 10.4.3, and so forth. Apple considers Major releases like 10.1, and 10.4 as two different OSes. OS X 10.0 and 10.1 were the only ones considered the same and were released the same year(2001).

Vista is really slightly optimized Xp code (which was optimized 2000 code) with a pretty interface. Rumor has it Windows 7 (Code Named Vienna) is suppose to be a new operating system from the ground up. I'm all for a dramatic recharge of the environment. I wouldn't mind a redone registry. But, I guess we'll find out in 2009.

2000 is build on nt 4.0 witch is build on nt 3.5 withc was new from the ground up.

It's not much different for mac 10.5 is based on 10.4 then 10.3, 10.2, 10.1, 10, X server, Openstep, nextstep witch was original from the ground up.

Rebuilding every thing from the ground up is not always benificial if you want to keep things backwared compatible.

Vienna is only romored to be new from the ground up (I'm not shure i heard this befor you posted it) and the fact that microsoft calles it windows 7 would sugest that it is still build on the NT kernal (2000 = 5.0 xp = 5.1 2003 = 5.2 vista = 6.0), also it is scheduled for 2010 not 2009. They do however talk about making radical changes to the user interface.

Being tied in to mac hardware probably has somthing to do with OS X's low price since they can charge you threw that as well, also the more regulare release would also cause each to have a lower price.

What the hell do you want 128bit for? Theres a limit to how much you can get from a biggere registre without also scaling the rest of the hardware.

1.5 is a big step from 1.4 but 1.3 to 1.4 wasn't much more then sp2 for xp.

I'm realy happy that they decided to unify the interface in 1.5 but I'm not to shure about the transparent menu bar.

I understand some of the sentiments about Vista needing a service pack, but if you really wanted it that badly you could have it now. Since Microsoft service packs mainly concentrate on bug fixes (as they should), you just have to download the bug fixes Microsoft has already released to have the best Vista possible. Service Packs just make updating more convenient.
