  • This is great music. The competition between baiju(Amir khan) and tansen(paluskar) is won by baiju taking his voice up and up and giving rapid moorkian at that high range. This is the most difficult part of singing. The ustads practice this for years. Then, the singer has to be gifted with the ability to go high. Most ghazal and film singers could not go into high notes and gave us low note music. That is why we must appreciate the few that can sing high notes.

  • the tabla work is fking AWESOME! I play guitar and am mostly into western rock n stuff, but time and again I keep coming back to this song for its pure awesomeness. I think this song is unmatched in its brilliance in the history of hindi cinema music.

  • wat an outstanding singing .......... may ur souls rest in peace

  • @thehappiestman lol. although i disagree, sweet comment.

  • wah wah kya bat hai

  • wah kya baat hai.

  • i so want the lyrics of this song!

  • Wow!!!!!!! Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

  • great film and great climax

  • Ustad AMIR Khan and Pandit D.V.Paluskar

  • Yes two legends coming together - this song is a pure bliss !!!

  • Surendra Nath as Tansen , old man sitting with Bharat Bhushan is comedian RADHA KISHAN

  • Master NOUSHADZ desi tori he was a true master AMEER KAHN INDOOR WALAY AND B PULOSKER are singing this classical MASTER PIECE composed by MASTER himself 03332604292IT IS CONSIDERED TO BE NO 1 CALSSICAL BASED MOVIE OF INDIAN FILM HISTORY

  • I hope u know that Tansen, in Baiju Bawra, was none other than famous acter/singer of yesteryears, Surendra, who was a hero in films like Anmol Ghadi (Awaj De Kahan Hai), Lal Haveli , Anokhi Ada & many others of 1940 era. H e was the highest paid star of that time & the only one to be provided tpt by the Studio to & fro his residence.

  • oddly, no indian film has ever portrayed the music of the time. tansen and baiju singing khayals and thumris. never a dhrupad for example. one exception was dhrupad composition sung by k l siagal in some film. cannot remember which.

  • You are absolutely right..they could have gotten the Sr. Dagar Bros. who were alive then to sing dhrupad. Well! technical correctness has never been a forte of Bollywood. If you read history of Baiju Bawra it's totally different from what is presented in this movie. I hope somebody redoes Baiju Bawra with the facts & with the music of his time.

  • i don't know, indian singers are the most technically talented in the entire world. with our classical base, no one comes close..

  • @r8rdarklord

The problem with getting dagar bandhu was the majestic and slow pace of dhrupad bandishes

Drupad singers would not even agree to be recorded for 78 RPM, 3 and half minute format! kesari bai Keskar and Allauddin Khan sahib had issue with Microphone and Drupadias will refuse to cut down their Aalaps! they could not have filmed a "contest" with slow paced Dhrupad! Theseare practicalities NOT technical correctness or lack of it as you imply!

  • Respond to this video..

NOUSHADJI WASTHE FIRST COMPOSER TO INTRODUCE THESES STALWARTS SINGING " Pukka Gaana" .in Indian films and give every one a box office Hit!

  • It was for the first time that my great-grand father Mr.Vijay Bhatt introduced classical music to films so successfully, with such great gaints in duet on such a large platform..this is the first and last duet of such legends of old,Amir Khansahb and Paluskarji especially on the big screen!

  • The duet is in rag Desi which is a morning raga and is a "Janya" rag from Asavari Thaat. Desh ,on the other hand ,is an evening raga and comes from Khamaj Thaat. Indeed this is an alltime great song and we are indebted to Naushad Saheb for bringing these two stalwarts together and for giving us this rare but delectable feast of a music.

  • Thank you nash What about the other song by Bade Gulamali Khan Please

  • Divine, simply divine! No other words can describe this uplifting aural experience.

  • this could not have been composed by naushad.

  • i think it was naushad sahab.

its based heavily on raga desh though.

  • The raga is DESI TODI.

  • thanks, my bad.

  • What great singing!

  • very true, indian singers are w/o a doubt the greatest in the world.

our music is the greatest :]

not so much anymore, but our classical music is the best

  • i agree with u !!

  • There is nothing to compose, there are two giants who are singing this song, give the sthayi antara and get out of the way.

  • You are right Naushad in an interview acknowledged this. He just gave the sthayi and antara to these two giants, and watched in awe.

  • Can you please let me know where this interview of naushadji will be available? or where it was published?

  • Does anyone remember who are the actual singers in this competition? One clue - Amir Khan and the other one?

  • other singer is Pt Digambar Vishnu (D.V.) Paluskar singing for Bharat Bhushan(Baiju)

  • You are right!! DVPji. Fantastic competition. There was another similar situation which has been catered to by Bhimsen Joshi and another famous playback singer Manna Dey...and in that Manna Dey wins!!

  • @vidyanshu

The film was basnt bahar ( available on you tube) and the "OTHER singer" was Mohammad rafi" and the song was in eponymous raag Basnt Bhaar " Ketaki Ghulab Juhi Champak Ban phoole"

It is available on this site elsewhere

  • @Psyche1954

I am sorry to disappoint you. If you talk to anyone who has heard Manna dey and Mohd. Rafi, they will confirm that its Manna Dey. Or else, pls. google up the movie(Basant Bahar) and you will see its Manna Dey.

Or else if you can make the distinction, listen to : watch?v=MBIX3a84v8g and judge for yourself.

I have criticized that song ad nauseam to music connoisseurs .. how can Manna Dey defeat Pt. Bhimsen Joshi?!

  • @0musing

You are right! It is MANNA DE! there CAN BE NO doubt! In my mind I can hear the replay and I have heard the track zillionth time! I think there are slight resemblence to Rafi in parts of taan patterns and i got swayed during a lapse in concentration! Mea Culpa! Thanks for pointing it out!

  • @0musing

As far as Bhimsen ji was concerned I remember reading somewhere ( probably in a Mohan Nadkarni column) that the film was edited and so was the track and the parts of Bhimsenji was recorded before Manna De sang his part and Bhimsenji wasn't even aware of this shenanigan in the film! In real life NO ONE CAN imagine such sacrilege!

I have heard Bhimsen ji, Live, several times! He was probably a Gandharva who came on this earth to show us mortals the intricacies of classical Music

  • @0musing i dont know, i thought manna dey did put up a nice fight and while he might not be a classical exponent, he is also a trained classical singer, if i am correct of bishnupur gharana

  • Pt. Dattatreya Vishnu Paluskar. Pt. Vishnu Digambar Paluskar was his father.

  • thank you so much. been searching for this song(video) for a long time.

  • excellent

  • kol yeah thanx.. yea i ave heard abot deepak raag yet it seems to b unexistent toay? ther are no recordings, no texts related? wat is itz scale ?? so the power of raag desi can melt objects?

  • pure class....pure class...aha...I wish I could sing like that...

  • I still don't undestand how come you understand raags..I love it and I listen to it..but I still can't pick ups raags..I learnt tabla for long..but I had never been able to pick up raags..maybe my schooling was not good in relation to this..hehe

  • If you listen to many recordings of the same raga, you start seeing the patterns -- characteristic phrases, how certain notes are approached, and so on. For example, look for and listen to D.V. Paluskar's Desi khayal "Naiyya mori bhayi" (vilambit)/"Saachi kahat hai Adarang" (drut).

  • in the last i not enjoyed The ending tan ,,, the song is remaing five or six seconds..

  • it is Raag Desi

  • wat is happening in this scene? anyone know?

    thanx

  • I haven't seen this movie. But as far as story goes, Baiju defeated Tansen in Mughal samrat Akbar's court in a singing competition. This is that scene I guess.

  • thankyou...but i was wondering about the thing that is melting(?) looks lyk butter? wat is the meaning of it. is it signifying the raag desi's power? that it can melt butter? i may be completely wrong...jus wondering

    thanx again

  • u r welcome. I also couldn't make it out, what was melting. But it is probably to signify the power of singing. Tansen, Bauji (actual name Brijnath) have the power to make such changes (as it is said). U can go to wikipedia and can find a little more detail about him.

  • okay thankyou very much!

  • In this competition, both Tansen and Baijnath(Baiju) are asked to melt the Marble piece (and not *Butter* :-)) by their Music.

This whole thing signifies the power of the various Raagas, if one is master in Music, he can do this. Haven't you heard about Deepak Raag, Raag Megh Malhaar etc. all these raagas have their own significance and their own power, you need to practice a lot lot to get a small grip.

  • Well! the song explains it - what is in water is a stone. The two singers are trying to melt the stone with there taans.

Prem ka kanan premi jaane, taan se pathar pighlave.

Baiju ke sangitast daata jala mein aag lagawein.

  • actually, it seems like it is

"baiju ke sangeet se daata jal mein aag laga de"

  • It is actually

"Prem ke kaaran premi gaavein, Taano se paathar piglavein, Jagat mein rahe maan re"

  • Both you guys are right, it is that.

  • which raaag is this?

  • Ustad Amir Khan and DV Paluskar sing amazingly in this. Thank you for the post!

  • What a treat. D.V.Paluskar is at his divine best---while Amir Khan is equally brilliant. However, Paluskar not only steals the show, his voice is like knife cutting thru a block of butter--sweet yet poignant, full of emotions.

  • Nobody steals the show - Naushad in an interview said that Pt. Paluskar was very hesitant and requested Ustad Amir khan to sing the portions sung by Baiju Bawra. Ustad Amir Khan told Panditji that he would prefer to be known as Tansen even though Tansen loses. He also told him not to worry and just sing. Naushad didn't even compose, he just gave the sthayi & antara to the maestros.

  • interesting details. can you tell me where Naushad said the story behind this song ? can i have the full interview ? or where it will be available? will be very very grateful if you let me know.

  • There is another bit of information surrounding this song. Late J P Ghosh - a Tabla maetro of Kolkata - wrote is his book 'Tahjib E Mousiqui' that DV Paluskar was deeply influenced by Ustad Amir Khan's music thru' this experience of singing with Khansahib. He also brought some changes in his gayaki as a result, and admitted it frankly to Mr Ghosh. But his gurubhai Pt Vinayak R Patwardhan didn't like it, but that's happens in a musician's life.

  • This is a very old interview which I heard as a kind growing in India. It was broadcasted on the Urdu service, where-in the interviewer wanted to know the intimate details such as this. I haven't searched on the web, it's possible that sound bytes from the interview may be available.

  • There is another one relating to Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Naushad approached him to sing for Tansen in Mughaleazam. BGAK refused citing reasons like it takes him 30 mins to warmup, hence he wasn't interested in doing the song. It also didn't help that BGAK didn't like the way the producer looked at him. Anyway, after lot of cajoling, BGAK sang two songs one in Rageshwari and another in Sohani.

  • @r8rdarklord

the coronation song/or return from the battlefield song "shubha din aayo" in Baageshri and the plaintif haunting melody " prem Jogan banke" in Sohni!

  • this is the best song ever ever ever!

  • THANK YOU SO SO SO SO MUCH!!!!!
