Everything he's saying just makes so much sense, about all the time signatures and stuff. This is what the future of rock should be, because it is just so much more interesting to listen to than simple 4/4 beats with overlaying melodies.
@eyeronman87 well it's a 3/2 signature, alternating at most points between the feet and the hands. Looks to me like a soundcheck, because you should always play every feature of the kit when doing so.
@bigwaves81 nothing to be sorry about..........its a non contest...Carey is the second best drummer to ever play.Bonham has/is number one !..just my opinion, for what its worth.
A beginner plays a beat, a professional backs up the other musicians by following thier playing with the drums. A great player does that and plays a melody aswell
Goddamn, Thanks for the post dude! That cd he just poped in sounds tasty, and you can really tell where his style and influence comes from. I'd be delighted if Danny ever came out with a solo album :D
I could always tell he was influenced by Bill Bruford just by listening to his drumming and sure enough he pulls out King Crimson's "Discipline" cd. If you've never heard "Discipline," "Beat," or "Three of a Perfect Pair" by King Crimson then you need to go out and find them or order them online. Great drumming by Bruford. Also has Adrien Belew, Robert Fripp, and Tony Levin. Highly recommended if you like Tool. It's just a different kind of "heavy" than Tool.
@bigburnsbiss1 I'm with you, but I'd rather see a well-produced DVD concert. The only DVD stuff from Tool I've ever seen is "unauthorized." I've seen them live twice. I know they could put out an awesome live DVD but for some reason they haven't.
@drewper73 because they want people to listen to the music, not watch them that is why they don't put lyrics in the book that comes with the cd, or really show off at their live shows
@Insid15 That's a good point. I could still listen to them while watching the DVD. I've seen them twice and they put on a great show which is why I'd like to see a well-produced live DVD to relive those experiences and rewind/pause the moments that blow my mind. You're definitely right about them not showing off at their concerts. The 1st time I saw them Maynard was right up front, but the 2nd time in 2001, he was back and to the left. All you could see was his silhouette. Maybe 1 of these days.
@Insid15 You are correct, but even on YouTube you can find live shows with cameramen behind the stage video taping. Very big nice cameras too. The future of a live DVD recording is very possible.
simmons SDX. it was the model of electronic sample triggers that he used. in the interview hes reffering to the actual machine that held the samples as opposed to the pads themselves, but both were made by simmons.
You can really hear the King Crimson influence on Tool when he plays the song in the CD player at 3:17.

Anyone know what's going on at 2:30? Assuming its just a warm up, but it would be nice if any drummers could provide some insight.

By the way, the docu might have aired in 1997 but the live recordings have been made in the fall of 1996. I've looked it up at Tool's tour journal.

Indeed, KC's Discipline was very innovative and great to hear Danny's thoughts on it.
