One of the best bands of all time for sure. Such a beautiful group. Adam Duritz is an enigma, such a wonderful mind. May they live on forever in history.
Their live performances are so much better, because Adam puts so much emotion into his songs. And you can feel it in his body movements and the way he sings. It is truly the most beautiful thing, like seeing a newborn child or a sunset. Thank you Adam.
Please, for the love of God, sing ONE fucking Counting Crows song with the original melody like it is on the album. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, oh so, annoying.
I love the vulnerability he shows in this performance. It's like he's laying his bloody heart out there for all of america and does it unflinchingly and apologetically. Adam is a god. Just saying.
Right around this time Counting Crows was on Letterman & sang their song Catapult. That was a SUPER great performance ... I really wish somebody would post that here, I REALLY like to see it again.......
@photofake Actually their performance of Catapult was a few years later when they were promoting Recovering the Satellites, their second album. Letterman was so impressed by this performance that he invited them back to perform for two consecutive nights (Catapult on the first night and A Long December on the second), which had never happened before on his show. That said, yeah, it'd be great to see that performance posted as well!
what happened to emotion in mainstream music? not trying to knock it because i love all forms of music, but just compared to this it seems like something went wrong between 1994 and 2010. love this song so much
I love to see emotion while singing it but Adam lives that emotion. It's breathtaking and beautiful, the art that he writes and creates and performs. This is the best performance of the song I've seen thus far. I've never seen the band get as hard as they do at 4:15 to the end. It's cathartic. It's magnificent.
The way he holds himself at the end, 5:25 seems like that last line is true. And that's heartbreaking.
Its too bad he struggled so much with fame and what some have said, a personal problem with a dissociative disorder. This is when music was music, compared to the shit we hear on the radio today. I miss the 90s
why does he never sing the same way he does on the album?? i wouldnt expect him to do it the same way all the time, but ive never even seen it once. not talking shit, i just love the way the melody flows on the studio track
@kickit301....they try to keep the song fresh and not overplayed...If you had to sing the same thing over and over again you'd prob wanna change it up a bit so thats what they do...Although we'd all love it if they sang the album version every time!
@kickit301 i'm with you on this. when i saw them in concert i was overwhelmingly disappointed because of that. I don't mind it being different if it was better, but it just seemed different for the sakes of being different. i feel like the person who engineered the album deserved some credit for writing the songs because to cut his singing into a melody had to be painstaking. this was actually faithful to the album compared to when i saw them live.
@boscodaze i agree. this one's not bad, i just want to see the album version live at least just ONCE. you havent found any vids of it have you? if so id love to see it
At this point in Time Adam Duritz was one of the most genuine and amazingly emotive vocalists around. Still a great songwriter to this day but not quite the same. Him Thom York and Jeff Buckley are the three singers that can pull me out of any shitty self-pitying mood and back on my feet. Amazing.
Watch this video and than watch them doing You Can't Count On Me on the letterman show. Really shows how much they have matured. Their still as great as they were than as they are now
there's something so vulnerable and empathic about adam duritz and his voice. And his music is so honest and real...the depth of emotion of a performance like this can just break you to tears
There's a similar version on the counting crows greatest album (in my opinion): Across a Wire. It's a double live album featuring a VH1 storytellers session from '94 and a MTV live at the 10 Spot show...if you like this, the VH1 storytellers disc will blow you away
I love counting crows but im gonna be honest... extremely hard to find a live version of any of thier songs that i like.. but this one is great. He must have stayed relatively close to the tone of the album version because that was one of the first television appearances. Counting crows live is an acquired taste even if you love the albums.
How can someone dislike this? The pure passion is the song should be enough to be appreciated at least. Totally agree with DahMasterDebaters.

One of the best song of the 90s, nothing to do with Accidentally in love or A Long December and other mainstream crap by CC.
Just listen to their first album: every song is just perfect.

It's called passion, not simply recreating the same exact thing performance after performance. Doofus.
