Great cover...but NOBODY will ever top Robert Plant. Oh yeah...I'm a huge Chris Cornell fan so I can safely say that when it comes to my two fav. vocalists...one still stands on top. Much love and keep rockinChris.
i enjoyed it at the start but then it just kept going in overdrive. needed to slow down more and let you dwell in the moment. the best part in the original was when when everyone stops playing and plant goes "waaaaay dooown insiiiide... womaaaaaaaan ...you neeed...... LOOOOOOOOOVE". i dont think cornell did that part well
You know what I like about Jimmy Page? He knows the use of silence. Carlos Santana is all scales all the time. Technically proficient, of course, but I like the song because it's a good song, not because Santana had to play a five minute solo.
@MegaBlackDays page doesnt know silence. hes the best riff writer ever, but a lot of his lead guitar is fairly sloppy, fast, and with little spacing. Santana, on the other hand, writes average riffs/songs, but his leads are very well phrased, and he uses more restraint than anyone else when he plays lead/solos
While i appreciate the faster rythm and Cornell's vocals, there's one problem with this cover: SANTANA IS PLAYING! Page made it simple and beautiful, but Santana has to add this mini-solo here, this mini-solo there, HE CAN'T STAND QUIET FOR GOD'S SAKE!
@jevimetal13 its santana's goddamn record. he didnt write the song, so thats what he chose to do to make it his own. page was the leader of zep, not plant, thus homage to page, and tweaks of his part are more important than the replication of plants vocals. If cornell were phrasing differently, santana would know to give him space.
it didnt come out too great i can admit that, im a hugeee santana fan i have all of his music. still no need to hate, they didnt "ruin" anything cause all those old songs are still there! my doors, zeppelin, r still sittin on the shelf i can listen to it whenever! santana just wanted to do a project cause he has the money for it, you think he cares for your criticizm? hes sitting in his yacht drinkin out of an 1800 bottle with still better guitar skill than 90% of guitarists. you do the math.
Not only are all of your mothers dirty whores, but this is the laziest and most uninspired album I have heard in my life. Please, do not worry about responding to this. I am killing myself upon release of this album. It is over. You have all given in. Dave is too far away to save me now. Goodbye cruel, mediocre world.
loved it..listened to zep's one right after this..seems like chris is holding something back where as plant just lets loose everything he's got..just my opinion..loved this one too
If it is a good tune to begin with...I find it perfectly okay for covers...some may be crap..but Zepp reshaped old tunes themselves...being aware of music history..recognizing roots..the building blocks of music in general...
amazing tribute to a great song. sugestion if one lame ass pop or rap singer makes a cover of this or any great rock song. complaint, but if Santana makes a cover and if it is as great as this one. just enjoy it. im sure the Zeps are not ofended by it.
I always find it hilarious that whenever someone covers a classic song, half the motherfuckers in the comment section ride it off without even listening to it. Come on. Even if you did not like the song, tastefully and respectfully state what you did not like, or did like. Like so: I prefer Page and Bonham's playing on the original, but I do like the faster pace, and VASTLY prefer Chris Cornell's vocals. But that is simply my opinion. Voila. Intelligence. Not: MY SHIT WASS BETR THAN THAT.
@1richards I always find it hilarious that when illiterate motherfuckers like you go on a rant, you can't even spell simple words. It's even more hilarious to read all the other illiterate morons' comments on Youtube, the world's gathering place for illiterate morons.
And my opinion is: Saying that Chris Cornell is a better vocalist than robert Plant is definitely inane O_o. C'mon, man, this is THE blues-rock singer. His voice is legendary. You cannot even compare him with Chriss cornell.
@briands1993 (this is 1richards, but I hooked up my youtube to my gmail, hence the different account name)
anyway. I understand that I must be the insane minority with this opinion, but I just like Cornell better. I can always feel Plant's ego seeping through his voice. (Whether or not one likes his voice, I think his massive ego is kinda hard to deny. He once screamed "I'm a golden god!" across the Sunset Strip.) Cornell is one of my favorite vocalists ever, with less ego, so, I prefer him.
@mp3piratesavvy No one does Robert Plant better than Robert Plant, because there's only one Robert Plant. As no one does Chris Cornell better than Chris Cornell. They're very different.
@mp3piratesavvy LOL SANTANA COULDNT PLAY MARACAS FOR LED ZEPPELIN AND WHO IS THIS PHONY USING TONS OF DIGITAL EFFECTS TO MODIFY HIS VOICE THAT YOU CLAIM IS BETTER THAN PLANT DO ME A FAVOR AND GET YOUR EARS CHECKED. CHECK ANY TOP GUITARIST LIST AND NOT ONE WILL ANYONE HAVE SANTANA OVER PAGE SORRY TRY AGAIN.
@2112Zeppelin you obviously are an ignorant and don't know a thing about music, Carlos Santana is a rock icon, and a pioneer by combinig rock, salsa and other styles... so stfu!!
@rmgshinobi Geez man there's no need to be so rude, I just said that i am not a huge
Santana fan, that doesn't mean that I deny him as an influential and successful rockstar. Just because i have differing views on a muscian from you means I'm ignorant?
@MrWildboy214 Dude i fucking love Led Zeppelin and Robert Plant but a cover is a cover and i think Cornell does a really good job, this is definatly better than a lot of other Zeppelin covers that i've heard.
@MrWildboy214 Dude, mellow out brother. lol. Chris Cornell needs ZERO digital effects done, as he as a four octave vocal range. I honestly am not that big of a fan of Santana, but
@1richards By far the greatest comment I have ever seen. I wish people were as respectful as you. So many people are rude and disgusting. You are a genius. Thank you.
@1richards ummm. just one thing, robert plant FUCKIN OWNS this...literally and figuratively. chris cornell does not even hold a candle to the sheer raw talent of plant...just sayin
well in my humble Zeppelin saturated hearts opinion-a lil too sped up for my tastes and drums seem "poppy"..i think chris cornell is phenominal singer and very qualified to give Plants tunes a go,but he leaves me wanting him to freakin drink the necter and friggin bring it!!..the guitar work was.. very good, but somehow the dark, mystical, delveing into mans soul quality was simply absent...still ive always wanted to hear chris do zeppelin..not bad at all..just give it more..bleed dammit!!
@whisperinwindcried67 agreed ..listen to both right one after another line by line..i feel chris is holding something back but plant just lets loose..donno if that makes sense or not...and totally agree about the dark-ish tinge missing from the guitars..this one seems more...umm...hip !!
This is.......maybe the worst thing i've ever heard. No no, I take that back--back in black from this album is the worst thing i've ever heard. Ugh. Please stop, Carlos.
@kidshazam For the record, Riders on the Storm is worse. Because it's a bad song recorded as if by the living dead. I've never heard anything more mailed in.
Im my opinion EPIC fail. Santana blows the solo, no not because of note for note recall, just bad choices in my estimate. Cornell on the other hand does this justice. Too bad Carlos stepped all over the way down inside part. Also, not a good feel or tempo for this song. It needed to be slower than the original not FASTER. He turned a sex groove into a polka, lol.
And I used to *HATE* Chris Cornell's voice. But I found that I couldn't help but like a few of his songs...so I finally gave up and started to officially like him. :) Especially "Fell On Black Days".
Oh, my point: I can't Believe how good Chris Cornell sounds on this version of "Whole Lotta Love"!!!--Wow!
@FreeFavl how does one go about hating Cornell's voice? He seriously has one of the most powerful voices ever (and he had insane range for a baritone in the 90s too, good that he recovered nowadays)
@SubmarinerAndroid is that a joke?? no doubt bout tina turners talent but shes aint no rocknroll chick and cant ever mess with led zep (i wonder if she ever really tried to)
@bkfmatze Tina Turner was not rock'n'roll??? You don't know Tina Turner then. I'm certain that the boys in Led Zeppelin looked up to her as a rock goddess. Go download her singing "Whole Lotta Love", listen to "Acid Queen" from The Who's movie Tommy, and familiarize yourself with the works of Ike & Tina.
I pretty much disregard all the haters as nothing but little punk boys who haven't been around long enough to have heard what real good music is all about.most of them probably aren't even old enough to buy an alcohlic drink legally yet.So in my opinion their opinion doesn't even count yet.
I like this version, and I like the way Cornell sang it. But the groove that Zeppelin gave to the solo and the whole song after that is missing for me, it just ain't here. Still, I gotta love Santana:)
what does "he's no Plant" mean? Is he supposed to be another Robert Plant? why can't people be open minded enough to appreciate one person's interpretation of a great classic song?
Sorry but Santana & Cornell > Plant & Page

Too bad Carlos stepped all over the way down inside part. Also, not a good feel or tempo for this song. It needed to be slower than the original not FASTER. He turned a sex groove into a polka, lol.

Something about Santana I never liked...

This is better than Led Zeppelin, but it can't beat Tina Turner's version
SubmarinerAndroid 1 year ago
