  • i like sitting it the backseat as well

  • This is based on a real story... She was really in a car when lightening hit the driver and he ran into a tree. So the song takes two meanings, in a way: 1. Taking a more passive role in life and realizing you've yet to stand up on your own. 2. Her experience caused a phobia of driving, therefore her whole life she's sort of been dealing with the idea of driving. Both meanings sort of intertwine... And can relate to different people.

  • @hotpeacechick

I think this rather controversial song to refer to growing up. Thus Alice (in wonderland) dies in the night, the family tree's loosing all its leaves, and she's been learning to drive. It's like a passage from childhood to adulthood. Of course it also may refer to something that happened to her in the back seat of a car, something of a sexual nature, that changed her. Nonetheless this is an amazing song and an all time favorite.

  • Her voice reminds me of Bjork's.

  • <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

  • powerful stuff.. i remember first hearing this in eighth grade & all i did was listen in awe. it's still as great

  • Oops...***one of the best concept album closers I've ever heard! It completes the album like its Jerry fucking Maguire! Sorry not trying to call you out, but I just was shocked by your comment. This song speaks to the innocence of youth, and fear of getting older and ultimately death SO well! A motif resounding throughout the album!

  • @the555music this is a concept album. And one of the best concept a

  • Oh wow i was lied to! Lol i was told that it was Bjork singing! But after the intro i knew it wasnt her ha i love this song anyway :) its so beautiful with emotion

  • I never really noticed ‘In The Back Seat’ within the context of the album. It was good, I liked it, but it wasn’t Power Out or Rebellion Lies or Wake Up etc. People talk about how digital music consumption has changed people’s listening habits for the worst as you just listen to the tracks you like and not the whole album. Most times, I agree with this, however listening to my iPod on shuffle in this case actually made me notice ‘In the Backseat’ in a way I had missed before.

  • 3:18. best part.

This is a very powerful song. I can't get enough of it.

  • Spectacular.....AF

  • One of the greatest songs from one of the greatest albums ever!!!

  • Brandon, you suck

  • One of my best friends just died. This album is my only comfort.

  • this reminds me of Les Miserables

  • this song...is awe-inducing.

  • Sitting in the backseat! Oh wait, wrong song...

  • I've listened to 4 songs off of this album and it's already one of my favorites.

  • I love his song

  • 3:14 to 3:48 gives me chills. Every. Single. Time.

  • @threemuskateerzx Me too

  • my favorite song off of the album.

  • Funeral is such a good album.

  • This song is so beautiful!!

  • when did the sugarcubes decide to rejoin and start making music again?

  • its her raw emotions about when her mother died

  • @sTapleEVA...your a nut job too....bjork sucks

  • yea... I can hear a similarity to bjork ...only difference is that re'gine sane...bjork is a freaking nut job ....bjork....thats the sound I made in a dumpster during fantasy feast in keywest florida...too many red headed sluts..hehehe

  • @bozo47p fuck you, bjork is amazing, what you call crazy, i call free spirited. the best musicians in history were atleast a little crazy and definatly set apart from everyone else. you would change your mind if you heard joga. but ya, you pissed me off

  • I got here by accident, I never heard this band. But I stayed because she sounds almost exactly like Bjork. Terrific song.

  • björk? why björk? i really dont think she sounds like björk? Anybody ever listened to a Björk-song?

  • I can't Stop listening to this!!

  • I love this song, she seems so passionate when she sings. It's so beautiful :3

  • 9 people never got the experience in the backseat apparently.

  • Dump Win and marry me Regine.

Actually no don't I think I'd be too upset! But if for some reason you decide you aren't right for each other, when pigs are not just flying but riding segways, I am officially available.

  • This kinda makes me never want to go in a car again.. Aw well, great song! ;D

  • a fucking brilliant piece of music

  • Goosebumps all the time.

  • @AlannahClaire GaGa is a good singer live

  • @Guttsu77 when she wants to be

  • They say Regine has a bad voice, but I really like it. It's authentic, and she can hit the notes. It brings actual emotion to a song unlike the shit like Ke$ha and Lady Gaga thats all digitalized.

  • @AlannahClaire Don't put gaga in with kesha. That's utterly ridiculous. Lady Gaga is a genuinely talented performer who chose to make music for mass consumption.

  • when I first started listening to arcade fire in high school I had never really experienced loss. Although I always liked this song I didn't really learn to appreciate it until my cousin and grandmother died within a few months of each other in my senior year. After my grandmother died I couldn't stop thinking about "My family tree's/losing all its leaves". This entire album was and is so easy for me to relate to.

  • If arcade fire's music was pancakes, they'd be some really good pancakes

  • @amberlover678 Great comment! They would be ihop pancakes

  • @amberlover678 I accidentally voted your comment down when I was trying to press reply. Fail. Anywho... I like your analogy. Its very true.

  • @amberlover678 you said it.

  • @amberlover678 I just had pancakes :)

  • Here I was not knowing it was about Reginés mum dying. I thought it meant something else, but God, now this song has even more meaning for me. It's truly a masterpiece.

  • Wow, what touching lyrics! Such a wonderful band.

  • similar voice to bjork

  • i am a strict metal/death fan.....but i fucking love "funeral" that side that loves "counting crows" "nirvana" and "blue october" come out when i hear this...

  • I was searching for another song but I'm happy my quest for the wanted sound led me to this treasure

  • Where is the "this blows my mind" button?

  • @ycanada Where is the ""this blows my mind" button" comment ?

Oh wait, there it is. :)

  • @lunahollyraerae im really sorry :( iv had a dog tht passed away recently.......i know how u fell :'(

  • 9 people have no life

  • @doctorwhoistorchwood Is it possible to escape from this type of comments, just ONCE, PLEASE? :)

  • @xChiChi007 Nope ^.^

  • this song is so beautiful. its so dreamy.

  • where's the love button?

  • where's the love button ?

  • I feel like this should have more exposure, I could easily see some diva covering this, not that I would like it but I am surprised it hasn't happened

  • 3:30 and so on......makes my heart melt. some of the most emotional and beautiful singing i've ever heard.

  • those high note pain me, in a good way

  • I love to ride down a really steep hill or over a bridge on my bike when I listen to this song, its really great and it gives me chills

  • Song reminds me of my ex gf...was her favorite. Still an amazing song

  • doing a dance to this song at school..its sad but it makes you "LIVE" while youre dancing :) I love it

  • The song holds a lot of sentimentality to me especially since i played it on the piano for my grandmother last Easter. She died of cancer the following month.

  • it's like crying in pain on end!

  • If B jork could only sing this, it would make it grow even more!

  • Regine has such a beautiful voice!!

  • Reminds me of Kate Bush.

  • @SupperOfTheMightyOne You're on drugs! I think the world of Regine but lets not compare apples with oranges. Search Kate Bush 1978, she was 19 and singing Wuthering Heights Live.

  • this made me remind Bjork....

  • Thumbs up if you hate when people attempt to analyze music or say how it could be better. JUST LISTEN AND ENJOY!

  • she shouts and i ache.

    this is beautiful

  • Her voice sounds a little bit like Bjork.^^ Very nice.

  • Wow. This song gives me a lump in my throat every time...

  • 10 out of 10 indeed

  • 5 people are emotionally incapable

  • THESE VOCALS MAN

    HOLY CRAP

  • @TheRoflSaurus her voice is really very horrible live

  • @makeupwithcat But would this song be as good without her voice? Why did their SNL (LIVE) performance Sprawl II" blow everybody away? It was her singing.

  • K, i just listened to all of the songs on this album JUST to make sure that i liked it before i get it, and guess who's getting this album along with Neon Bible!!! just take a good guess!

  • actually lifts you through the ceiling this song

  • @IIIdobyIII thats what i though...

  • I've just remembered why Funeral is my favourite album of all time. Brilliant. Just brilliant.

  • And I am oficially crying for no apperant reason.

  • You should put the lyrics in the bar :)

  • stop crying

  • I'm 15 and taking a drivers education course right now. Whenever I get behind the wheel I think of this song... And I miss being in the backseat. :(

  • This may be my least favourite song of theirs. Still great though. I love all of their songs.

  • I heard this for the first time when all my friends were going away to college, brings me to tears every time.

  • this song makes me cry because its soooo beautiful

  • It simply doesn't get better then this. Every song by these guys...just...AGH. SO GOOD

  • i play this song whenever my dad asks me to learn to drive

  • I've listened to this song since i was an angsty 14 year-old kid, and six years and hundreds of plays later, it still brings me to tears. favourite song of all time.

  • she sounds a bit like bjork. which of course is the best compliment ever cuz bjork is fucking amazing

  • I wouldn't say Regine's voice is weak, it's tender and I totally enjoy in it.

  • 2:36 is a jolt back to life

  • I love her voice. Can anyone tell if there are any other songs by Arcade Fire sung by the woman? Aside from Haiti, Sprawl II and Black Wave/Bad Vibrations?

  • @Glaceo yes i got a very rare Recording of poupe de cire covered by arcade fire., i will upload it tonight and pm you

  • @supperelias

    Me too please. :)

  • @shweetshtuff21 Done, For everyone else who's interested, i will add it as a video response to this clip, njoy!

  • @Glaceo 'une année sans lumière', I think she also sang this one...

  • @Glaceo Empty Room!

  • @Glaceo She sings in Empty Room, right?

  • @Glaceo Half light I and Empty Room

  • @Glaceo Empty Room

  • @Glaceo She also sings in Lenin

  • @Glaceo Sprawl II is a very good one

  • @Glaceo Empty Room, Half Light 1. She also sings on many other songs, along with Win: No Cars Go, The Suburbs (continued), Neighborhood 2, Une annee sans lumiere, etc.

  • @khatmandu89 I don't eeven know who bjork is :P

  • I love this..this band has never let me down.

  • This is the perfect finisher to the album. And Tunnels is the perfect opener. Tunnels is about life, growing up, and being separated from everything you loved as a kid. In The Back Seat is about death, coming to terms with, and having those you love being ripped away from you. And every other song in the album is just as grave. Funeral is one of my favorite albums, In The Backseat is one of my favorite songs. 10/10

  • @unkommon2001 Very well said. Tunnels is my all time favorite Arcade song. It's sad in a happy way or happy in a sad way, how about both.

So sad that the members lost family /:

  • @unkommon2001 I don't see how you drove the conclusion that this song is about coming to terms with death, for me this song is about taking control over your own life. Can you explain your reasoning please?

  • @myszone there are a few lines such as "alice died" and "my family tree's been losing all it's leaves" that imply it has something to do with death. my interpretation is that the song is about having family members die and becoming depressed and manipulative(hence, in the back seat). the line that says she's "learning to take the wheel" also implies that she is learning to cope with her problems and take charge of her own life.

  • @MrJerryZucchini -you're over-analyzing it. It's about Her mom dying in a car crash and how she was learning to drive her whole life but now prefers the Backseat.

  • I mean 10/10 really ;)

  • I listened to this album and didn't think much of it. Then i listened to it properly and it instantly became one of my favourite albums!! This probably comes third in my list of fave albums after Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here.

  • she sounds so like bjork

  • "Funeral" and "The Suburbs" flow so well together I can't get over it. It's telling one big story about their life. I mean I love when an album has songs that connect to make a story, but damn, albums connecting to other albums?

    I fucking love Arcade Fire

  • @OmegaLesPaul I always thought that too, there are so many lines in Funeral that could be applied to the theme of The Suburbs, Win writes a lot lyrics influenced by his past I think, (even in Neon Bible too). I do the same myself as a song writer, that's one of the reasons I love this band and connect so well with the lyrics. I'm curious to see what the next album will be like.

  • i luv how she sings this song !

  • Oh dear god this is amazing.

  • this is true...

  • best song ever!! i love her voice

  • I like the peace in the backseat, I don't have to drive, I don't have to speak, I can watch the country side, and I can fall asleep. My family tree's losing all its leaves, crashing towards the driver's seat, the lightning bolt made enough heat to melt the street beneath your feet. Alice died in the night, I've been learning to drive. My whole life, I've been learning. ....
  • beautiful song.

  • its ok

  • Holy fuck. This is so amazing. It makes me feel amazing.

  • beautiful song. but can anybody tell me exactly what its about? thanks. :)

  • simply beautiful song i always have to turn the lights out when i play this song on my guitar and just get lost in her vocals and those violins are so hypnotic then the ending is epic love how they build the song up great band proof there is still great music out there!!!

  • 3:05 onwards is amaaazzzzzzing

  • Had this song come into my head today while sitting in the backseat of a car in traffic, watching the trees go by oh-so slowly.

"I like the peace...in the backseat..."

  • "Alice died, in the night" is such a haunting line. And the way she sings it....

This song brought me to tears when I first heard it. I really connect with it. This song is beautiful - Arcade Fire should be proud of themselves.

  • sings like bjork

  • The end was great. Just What a voice she has.

  • sad song

make me think of my father who passed away this month

  • @peatleli

    I'm sorry.

  • @peatleli So sorry. The wonderful thing about music is that it provides us with these memories, I would imagine it is a nice thing to remember him.

  • @peatleli I hope your feeling better at this point.

  • @peatleli im so sorry...

  • @peatleli I'm to hear that about your father.

  • @peatleli i meant to say i'm sorry

  • @peatleli i am so sorry for your loss... =(
