This is based on a real story... She was really in a car when lightening hit the driver and he ran into a tree. So the song takes two meanings, in a way: 1. Taking a more passive role in life and realizing you've yet to stand up on your own. 2. Her experience caused a phobia of driving, therefore her whole life she's sort of been dealing with the idea of driving. Both meanings sort of intertwine... And can relate to different people.
I think this rather controversial song to refer to growing up. Thus Alice (in wonderland) dies in the night, the family tree's loosing all its leaves, and she's been learning to drive. It's like a passage from childhood to adulthood. Of course it also may refer to something that happened to her in the back seat of a car, something of a sexual nature, that changed her. Nonetheless this is an amazing song and an all time favorite.
Oops...***one of the best concept album closers I've ever heard! It completes the album like its Jerry fucking Maguire! Sorry not trying to call you out, but I just was shocked by your comment. This song speaks to the innocence of youth, and fear of getting older and ultimately death SO well! A motif resounding throughout the album!
Oh wow i was lied to! Lol i was told that it was Bjork singing! But after the intro i knew it wasnt her ha i love this song anyway :) its so beautiful with emotion
I never really noticed ‘In The Back Seat’ within the context of the album. It was good, I liked it, but it wasn’t Power Out or Rebellion Lies or Wake Up etc. People talk about how digital music consumption has changed people’s listening habits for the worst as you just listen to the tracks you like and not the whole album. Most times, I agree with this, however listening to my iPod on shuffle in this case actually made me notice ‘In the Backseat’ in a way I had missed before.
yea... I can hear a similarity to bjork ...only difference is that re'gine sane...bjork is a freaking nut job ....bjork....thats the sound I made in a dumpster during fantasy feast in keywest florida...too many red headed sluts..hehehe
@bozo47p fuck you, bjork is amazing, what you call crazy, i call free spirited. the best musicians in history were atleast a little crazy and definatly set apart from everyone else. you would change your mind if you heard joga. but ya, you pissed me off
Actually no don't I think I'd be too upset! But if for some reason you decide you aren't right for each other, when pigs are not just flying but riding segways, I am officially available.
They say Regine has a bad voice, but I really like it. It's authentic, and she can hit the notes. It brings actual emotion to a song unlike the shit like Ke$ha and Lady Gaga thats all digitalized.
@AlannahClaire Don't put gaga in with kesha. That's utterly ridiculous. Lady Gaga is a genuinely talented performer who chose to make music for mass consumption.
when I first started listening to arcade fire in high school I had never really experienced loss. Although I always liked this song I didn't really learn to appreciate it until my cousin and grandmother died within a few months of each other in my senior year. After my grandmother died I couldn't stop thinking about "My family tree's/losing all its leaves". This entire album was and is so easy for me to relate to.
Here I was not knowing it was about Reginés mum dying. I thought it meant something else, but God, now this song has even more meaning for me. It's truly a masterpiece.

i like that new boyz song called backseat soooooo much more than this. indie rock is garbage, critics know nothing about music anybody who likes this is just trying to be cool.
I feel like this should have more exposure, I could easily see some diva covering this, not that I would like it but I am surprised it hasn't happened
The song holds a lot of sentimentality to me especially since i played it on the piano for my grandmother last Easter. She died of cancer the following month.
@SupperOfTheMightyOne You're on drugs! I think the world of Regine but lets not compare apples with oranges. Search Kate Bush 1978, she was 19 and singing Wuthering Heights Live.
@makeupwithcat But would this song be as good without her voice? Why did their SNL (LIVE) performance Sprawl II" blow everybody away? It was her singing.
K, i just listened to all of the songs on this album JUST to make sure that i liked it before i get it, and guess who's getting this album along with Neon Bible!!! just take a good guess!
I've listened to this song since i was an angsty 14 year-old kid, and six years and hundreds of plays later, it still brings me to tears. favourite song of all time.
I love her voice. Can anyone tell if there are any other songs by Arcade Fire sung by the woman? Aside from Haiti, Sprawl II and Black Wave/Bad Vibrations?
@Glaceo Empty Room, Half Light 1. She also sings on many other songs, along with Win: No Cars Go, The Suburbs (continued), Neighborhood 2, Une annee sans lumiere, etc.
This is the perfect finisher to the album. And Tunnels is the perfect opener. Tunnels is about life, growing up, and being separated from everything you loved as a kid. In The Back Seat is about death, coming to terms with, and having those you love being ripped away from you. And every other song in the album is just as grave. Funeral is one of my favorite albums, In The Backseat is one of my favorite songs. 10/10
@unkommon2001 I don't see how you drove the conclusion that this song is about coming to terms with death, for me this song is about taking control over your own life. Can you explain your reasoning please?
@myszone there are a few lines such as "alice died" and "my family tree's been losing all it's leaves" that imply it has something to do with death. my interpretation is that the song is about having family members die and becoming depressed and manipulative(hence, in the back seat). the line that says she's "learning to take the wheel" also implies that she is learning to cope with her problems and take charge of her own life.
@MrJerryZucchini -you're over-analyzing it. It's about Her mom dying in a car crash and how she was learning to drive her whole life but now prefers the Backseat.
I listened to this album and didn't think much of it. Then i listened to it properly and it instantly became one of my favourite albums!! This probably comes third in my list of fave albums after Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here.
"Funeral" and "The Suburbs" flow so well together I can't get over it. It's telling one big story about their life. I mean I love when an album has songs that connect to make a story, but damn, albums connecting to other albums?
@OmegaLesPaul I always thought that too, there are so many lines in Funeral that could be applied to the theme of The Suburbs, Win writes a lot lyrics influenced by his past I think, (even in Neon Bible too). I do the same myself as a song writer, that's one of the reasons I love this band and connect so well with the lyrics. I'm curious to see what the next album will be like.
I like the peace in the backseat, I don't have to drive, I don't have to speak, I can watch the country side, and I can fall asleep. My family tree's losing all its leaves, crashing towards the driver's seat, the lightning bolt made enough heat to melt the street beneath your feet. Alice died in the night, I've been learning to drive. My whole life, I've been learning. ....
simply beautiful song i always have to turn the lights out when i play this song on my guitar and just get lost in her vocals and those violins are so hypnotic then the ending is epic love how they build the song up great band proof there is still great music out there!!!
this song is completely gorgeous
