I think this movie shows a lot of reality-based family issues, and I think Kevin Kline did a WONDERFUL job portraying a father that realized what he wants his life to mean to those who meant the most to him at the last chance he had to do something about it. GREAT father figure: made mistakes, let things slide, and isn't letting things slide anymore. "Now, I give a shit!" Like, "I always cared about you, always loved you, but tried to be your buddy. Everything you do is my business!" Right on!!!

When I found out Ian was Damon on Vampire Diaries, I came back to this and remembered him. Love this movie, even now that I'm older and understand all the things in this movie I didn't know when I was 12. :)

This happened to my uncle once. But instead of getting fired, he was forced to take computer courses paid by the company, because they loved the work he done. Pretty stupid to fire someone who knows the ground bases of the company and the kind of artwork they are interested in, especially someone who worked there for 20 years.

So rather then them keeping his work he destroyed it. The boss treated him like an idiot.

In this flick, he's playing a stereotypical character known as a goth or an emo or whatever in the carnation you teens call it and the Academy Awards really want to nominate good-acting in depth characters. I'm guessing you've been burn or rejected by one these types you've listed and are still angry for it so you're criticizing Hayden's preformance in this movie. If you were to pay more attention to the sentiment of the movie and not just that small part of one of the characters being played you might have caught the meaning of the story.
