Roxy Music is great...this song better than Neil Young, no...but Jealous Guy is as good as Lennon! My opinion...Avalon Album was the best album of all time to shag!! All night!! Castle or Jungle person, theres a song in there for you!
The mark of a good cover version is whether it adds a new dimension to the original song. Ferry's voice and this arrangement achieve this in spades. Young's original is still great in its own right.
Sorry Neil, I've tried not to compare Ferry, and your lyrics are brillant- like a shining star. But Roxy Music takes the song to another height--- like a hurricane. And the horn didn't hurt.
RARELY do I go in for cover tunes, plus I do like Neil Young ( a hometown boy.) My theory has always been, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music blow me away with their version of this Neil Young Classic.
I've been a Neil young freak since the Buffalo Springfield days and when I first heard this version from Radio City Music Hall in 1982 I thought that it was....stunning. Great job!
One of the great get-your-blood pumping peices of song-writing. If this doesn't make you want to embrace life, and plant a passionate smacker on the nearest pair of pretty lips, please god let us never be sat together on a long train journey. And how well this shows the capacity of Roxy Music to fire up an audience. Each to their own, but If only Bryan Ferry had grasped the opportunity to let his voice soar on the tag "getting blown away". And of only Andy Mackay sounded like Clarence Clemens.
A great song can be done a lot of different ways. Neil does this one very differently when it's just him and the pump organ than the guitar showcase with Crazy Horse. I'll bet he loves this one.
Think i was at this concert Frejus Amphi Theatre France 1980, very hot night, great gig 15000 people - fantastic , nice to see it again 30 yrs later = Darral

Yeah, I agree. I enjoy going down in the basement and listen to my dads vinyl-collection (I'm 17) much more than listening to the same music on youtube. When people started being able to download for free, the music lost it's value. Very few, especially young, people today cares for music.
@anthonyhollis1: I think Roxy´s version has a lot of passion... different from Neil Young´s though. It does lack the rawness because they´re different artists, but I still think it´s a great tribute to Mr. Young.

Its a great tribute to both to elicit such passion from both sides. But being a NY fan I think it goes to show what a great artist he is to have so many songs covered so well. To have as many songs covered, and covered well, most artists would love to have that many songs recorded. Love live Neil, and this cover.

Neil Young doesn't do a 'version' - it's his song. He wrote it, lived it. I like roxy music, but this twattish 80's singalong version is like comparing the works of Jackie Collins with Anton Chekov. And if you don't know which is which here, get your ears cut off, because music obviously isn't your forte.
Roxy Music is my all-time favorite band, but this is not a high point for them. Neil's version is far, far better. As far as Roxy's covers go, "Jealous Guy" is superior to this.
I've found that every N cover is better than NY would have done it... if you ever get a chance, check out Simple Minds version of the Needle and the Damage Done, that song took a dark dusty little tune and pulled it deep into a darker more disturbing place. The silly old tart should stick to M&S adverts. This is a travesty. However, I have shared it with several fellow Neil fans who all find it as unintentionally hilarious as I do. As we're in season of goodwill I say anything that makes us laugh shouldn't be frowned upon! :-)
G-sus. Some people are really cretinous, I love both Neil Young and Roxy Music, and I was impressed with Roxys cover of this song when it came out - an excellent version. I bet Neil appreciates it. But, you know, a "Johnson" is a euphemism for a dick. LMAO
Just to clarify.. this is a cover of Neil Youngs song... just like All Along The Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix is a cover of Bob Dylans song... I actually enjoy this version.. it is a different approach.. but a refreshing one... but the original will always be my favorite...
Now that's productive. I was going to delete your lame ass comment. But, then I decided that I should leave it up and let the world see for firsthand what a nice guy you are. It's great to see people enjoying their life as much as you obviously do. Cheers!
Pepper -- You saw Roxy Music in 1975? Put me down as officially jealous. First
time I saw them... Paris, September 9, 1982. On my honeymoon. Had married
my English girl in London the day before. Show wasi "under the bigtop," in a circus tent. "Avalon" tour. Incredible. Romantic. But now as I look back, I wish the show hadn't been so good. I might have wised up and gotten divorced a lot sooner if I hadn't gone to that concert.
Originally Brian Ferry wrote the lyric as "You are like Reuben 'Hurricane' Carter, your fists are fast but I wish you were smarter." Then, not to be beaten to the punch, so to speak, Bob Dylan hurriedly wrote and released his song about Hurricane Carter, and an extremely pissed off Ferry made some last minute changes in the studio, and unintentionally, made history.
I really love Ferry. I first saw Roxy in 1975 at Kent State Univ in Ohio. I think I was 13. Last saw Ferry in 99 at the house of Blues. Just bought the new CD, Dylanesqe, wasn't impressed at first but it grew on me.

He has covered some John Lennon and Bob Dylan works and well as this Neil Young song.
These are done homages to great song writers, not satires.

And if you don't have this DVD you should run out and get it!

Cheers!

Hehe nice comeback :)
Guess some people just don't (or can't!) 'get' the quality that is Bryan and Roxy Music ;)

You don't know what the hell you're talking about. This is a NEIL YOUNG SONG.
And it's got nothing to do with Reuben "Hurricane" Carter. It's about a woman.
"I wanna love you, but I'm getting blown away."

Actually Hurricane was a Dylan song about Reuben 'Hurricane' Carter. Like a Hurricane is a completely different song by Neil Young.

Thanks for your comment. Of course the Dylan tune "Hurricane" is about Reuben Carter. I was responding to rightfrigginnow's totally incorrect
comments that Bryan Ferry wrote a song with Ferry's lyric "You are like
Reuben 'Hurricane' Carter. Neither Ferry or Roxy Music ever did a song
about Carter. For years Roxy Music has been doing a fabulous cover of
Neil Young's "Like A Hurricane." First saw Roxy Music play it live in
Paris in September, 1982,

I really love Ferry. I first saw Roxy in 1975 at Kent State Univ in Ohio. I think I was 13. Last saw Ferry in 99 at the house of Blues. Just bought the new CD, Dylanesqe, wasn't impressed at first but it grew on me.
Peace,
Peppper
