So glad I gave it a chance on Netflix. This is an excellent movie, I was truly moved by it. Very rare that movie can make me feel for the characters as if I was going through it myself. It instantly became one of my favorites, so many life lessons can be learn from this epic masterpiece espcially with how the world is now.
I just watched this movie. it is one of the best. very powerful story. great acting and great action. very deep meaning in the movie about repenting from your past sins and changing your ways from violence and hatred to peace and tranquility.. it will bring tears your eyes and joy to your heart I'm sure. Peace to all
WOW I totally have to check this movie out! I usually love Jackie’s more traditional Kung Fu movies but I bet this one is good too. I was surprised to see him in the new documentary “Films of Fury” that just came out on demand but his scenes are really cool in it. It has some really great action sequences and movie clips too!
The movie seems to want to connect itself with Buddhism closely, but while it succeeds in the action department (and drama too, albeit shallowly), it almost has nothing to do with Buddhism apart from the Shaolin settings. There's no Buddhist value taught in the movie except from a few spoken sentences.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a much deeper movie by comparison.
@Baron0906, the origin of the swastika was hindu, the rotation of the nazi swastika is slightly tilted. Yup, that Hitler he was totally a Shaolin monk. I think he was inspired after learning the Dharma.
@bdom1000 this is not propaganda because this movie was based on true historical events, and ... well, when ever the americans put the japs, chinese, germans, and russians as the bad guy in movies about events that wouldn't happen or have never happened before? wouldn't that be american propaganda?
Seldom have I been engrossed in a movie so completely. This truly is one outstanding gem of a movie. In fact, it's one of the best movies I have seen in years, not just regarding Asian cinema but Western cinema as well.
What I have to see this , in the trailer you can see people getting harmed by chinese army and that Shaolin wil fight back , EVERY movie Jackie Chan is in is EPIC! I like it philosophical, action And cultural. SHaolin FTW and movie like ip man and this r just GREATLY AMAZINGLY PERFECT
I know no one else will care what I have to say in this comment...but I just want to express that I'm the 999,986th viewer. Sooo close to be the millionth viewer aargh! Nice trailer btw :).
I had the pleasure of seeing this movie. It's pretty good. You'll like it if you enjoy Chinese culture and/or know a good amount about it. Then you really understand the characters and their emotions. I liked the movie but I liked Ip Man more.
@hoonyb123 it's cool that you liked. after the movie, i overheard someone said the movie was too much for him and he expected Jacky Chan to fight more. I think "the movie was too much for him" means it's too philosphical and zen. Some people might have a hard time comprehend the plot of the movie. But i liked the movie, it's about turning back to being good.
@hoonyb123 Also, i like the song at the end of movie because its meaning is the same as the movie. The lead actor of the movie, Andy Lau, wrote it. :)
@ELijahReMiX yes i know jackie chans in there but i was jus saying that jet li shouldve been in there b cuz he's always the one who does shaolin movie but yah this move is still good!:)
This film shows Shaolin monks being attacked by Warlord troops in the 1920s. But during the Cultural Revolution, Chinese Red Guards inspired by Mao also attacked Shaolin Temple, forced it closed, destroyed Buddha statutes & beat up monks. But since China is governed by the Communist Party today, you won't see a movie in China about the destruction caused by the Cultural Revolution & Mao Zedong.
I think Jet Li should've been in this movie instead of Andy Lau...Andy lau is a good actor but i dnt think he matches these kind of movies..But i still think that this movie is good!I wanna watch it!
@MARYLEEGORGEOUS Jet li is not there but jackie chan is,The movie is great, when Andy Lau turn being a Monk since he was a general, becuz of his brother's betrayal..
I love how there's very little dialogue in the trailer (and impossible to understand for non-Chinese speakers) and yet it leaves such an impression on you that you really want to see the movie.
Looks like a good movie. Shaolin Temple surrounded in myth & legend. It was once attacked by Qing Empire. Also attacked by Red Guards during Cultural Revolution but they will not show that in China today where Communist Party still rules. Real Shaolin Kung Fu looks very different from flashy Wu Shu style you see in movies today. Real Shaolin Kung Fu designed for fighting, not for show.
Looks pretty average if you ask me. I mean its still no shoalin temple the debut film for jet li in 1960 something or the 36th chamber of shaolin with gordan lui or drunken master. Best film i've seen in recent years from this genre is Ipman and ongbak. Mind you thirteen assassins looks pretty sick.
And if anybody has any suggestions on good kung fu or samurai films please let me know.
Andy Lau and Jackie Chan is one of my two favourite chinese actor! too bad no Jet Li in this movie... and SUBTITLE is way more better than dubbed version!
subtitles in foreign movies are awesome... maybe you people that would rather have it dubbed should have paid more attention in school... learn to read dumbasses!
@OnlyHre4Pron actually, its not chinese speech its mandarin speech. A lot of people don't speak mandarin but cantonese but the kanji is similiar. So people who speak Cantonese can understand.
i see...i like chuck norris movies too...i remembered watching him when i'm still very young...as well as cynthia rothrock...but now i don't know any movies done by them. ^_^
@102293 It's overrated. I lived there before for 6 months; 12 hours everyday full of nothing but training. No running water, no toilets, no showers, no meat, no talking to girls, no leaving grounds without senior monk chaperon, no drinking, no smoking, no phone, no computer, no internet, maximum allowed in possession = $10 RMB ($1.5 USD), 8 sleep in one room, no air conditioning, no heating, no fighting outside of training. @darkjeshush See, i could take ALL of that for the sake of learning the art....except the no talking to chicks part. The prospect of not getting laid for years sucks ass man. Why cant they remove that last part? :(
@darkjeshush Must have been beautiful back then though. Nowadays people don't care much about that. Guns have destroyed that art same as technologies. But who doesn't like technology.

They dont do meat because they are vegeterians. They dont smoke, drink, dont talk with girls, phones, internet..etc....Its more like a place where you find your inner-self. Lol, and they conserve energy by not having air conditioner. A shaolin fighter can train in the cold or the in the heat.
@ch0bitsm3 No running water means no piping infrastructure. Mornings, we run down to the base of the mountain. and carry up buckets filled with water, drinkable only after boiling. And yes, you poop into a trench dug into the ground. Water is poured down one end to wash it away. You realize many things you took for granted... running water being one of them (no piping = no flushing, no faucets, no shower etc.). Some of the monks have been there for decades, I could only handle 6 months.
@102293 Yeah cuz every single asian person knows fucking kung fu, prays, wears some sort of traditional martial art uniform, and can defy the laws of gravity.... Be happy with your White culture kid... The Asian girls stupidly prefer it over Asian culture.
