I think this giving is just okay. Tempo is just a bit too fast for me. Too much rubato. The crescendos are too abrupt. Just an opinion, not a pronouncement.
This is spellbinding as always with Magdalena. Christianne Stotijn also sings this song with extraordinary stillness and emotional depth but a slightly darker timbre. This song always seems to attract great performances.
This was beautiful. Kozena is one of the few performers that really understands this piece. I think these tempos were particularly tasteful and befitting of the markings in the score. Bravo! The pianist did an excellent job of setting the mood and was light enough that the soloist could utilize a more delicate palette of timbre and dynamics.
Encore merci.
I have to admit I cried quite when I heard M. Kozena singing this, although(!) I'm not at all into romantic music. But this recording is not from myself, must have been another weeper.
@Gudrun74 Towards the end of the live performance of same on youtube I was overwhelmed by sudden emotion. The words are extremely touching and I remembered the movie in which I first heard this song by Renee Fleming (Bride of the wind), all very heartstring-pulling. First time I heard M. Kozena today, very pleasant voice and personality. Her voice reminds me of Dame Janet Baker -discovered her on the Edward Elgar cello concerto CD (du Pré) which also had a number of songs by Baker on it. *****
Are you sure it's not the digital noise from the compression on the audio? I'm on headphones and that's what it sounds like to me. It even buffers volume modulation.
@SpottyDorsord Nope, it's weeping. Just in a few spots, not correlated with compression of the audio, not just one sound. It's weeping. Very subtle. Listen again with your good head phones and crank up the volume. Or just enjoy the music and don't worry about it :>)
calling Mahler "avant garde" is amusing to say the least ;-) I hope you realise now that if you block out any music apart from Baroque you are missing out on a LOT of amazing works...don't you also find there were a lot of poor Baroque composers, just as there were many poor romantic and later composers? But in every epoch there is some genius too!
Fiordi..., nice comment ;-) I know I know, what would I then say to Stockhausen? I wasn`t always so reduced, was once quite fond of Bellini&Donizetti, when I lived in MUC where the incomparable E. Gruberova performed on a regular basis (I read you`re in Vienna, so...). With her, I realized I`m attracted by virtuosic singing. The natural consequence of that was for me to plunge more and more into baroque, the "Golden Age" of singing.
Magda is one of the best Mezzos live! I Love her! I cant wait to have her upcoming recital of Vivaldi arias with Venice Baroque Orquestra under Marcon in June called VIVALDI: Opera & Oratorio arias!
utterly gorgeous and deeply felt--she doesn't actually UNDERSTAND the singer she is imitating (obviously her teacher coached her): baker: the breaths--but in low notes auf deutsch this singer is superb and HERSELF
Thanks for posting this Gudrun! Very nice indeed. One of my favourite's Mahler's songs sung by one of my favourite singers. Her interpretation is very moving. I heard her mention several years ago when talking about possible future Lieder repertoir, that she considers herself too young to dare to attempt Mahler. Apparently, she dares already, and god bless her for it. Any idea where and when from is this bradcast? Wish she would record some more Lieder CDs.
You're very welcome. I added some info in the field on the right. What you say fits very well in the picture I have from her. Very careful and somehow humble in the selection of her repertoire. I didn't attend this concert, but she sang the Rückertlieder already in March 07 close to where I live (with G. Dudamel). I was deeply moved, although(!) I'm normally not at all into Romantic Lieder. But with Magdalena ...
Beautiful song, most beautiful song... and I love it when Kozena uses that wonderful low dark register she has, it is a truly poetic asset and she should let us hear it more often.
Thanks, I tried my best ;-) Well I wouldn't describe myself as romantic, but this Lied is an exception. I mean she sings at 3:29 the incredible words which mean "I'm dead", then pausepause, then adds "to the world's tumult". That's amazing.
Well I'm not too familiar to the vocal repertoire of Mahler, but this lied is amazing! Of course my musical taste goes from medieval to Rococo or Classicism (Classicism only with Mozart), to me the rest of artistic periods are cute but sometimes boring.
Neither am I and I wouldn't know this song, had it not been sung be Magda (whom I adore as Handel Cantatas interpret, did I mention??). Normally, my ears feel naked outside baroque, want to say they are missing sth if there's no basso continuo. Don't know why. Hasn't been always like this, but I'm afraid it will stay forever like this.
She is going for something in particular here. I like it.

Listening to this carefully a number of times with some good headphones, someone near the microphone is softly crying throughout.
Don't really blame them. Gudrun74, is it you?

Do you know the Dutch mezzo Christianne Stotijn? She is singing the Ruckert Lieder with Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Haitink conducting) in April.

Malcolm Martineau is a great pianist. What a duo! I wish they'd record a CD together with romantic lieder (Mahler, Strauss et al).
